BOARD PRESIDENT, SUPERINTENDENT TO ASK UNIONS TO HELP REDUCE LAYOFFS

WHAT: News conference where Dr. John Lee Evans, San Diego Unified School

will ask district unions to come to the negotiating table to help save

negotiate. We must do this now." Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education
President.

Hoover High School Dedicates New Green Construction Technology Facility; Building Earned Silver Certificate for Leadership in Energy Environmental Design

WHAT:  San Diego Unified School District is dedicating its new Green Construction Technology facility, a cutting-edge project at Hoover High School that features a modern commercial woodshop set in an industrial arts classroom. The 5,700-square-foot College, Career & Technical Education facility is a true model of green construction that serves as an educational lab for teaching students about renewable technologies in construction, including photovoltaic solar systems, renewable and recycled building products and energy efficiency. The building itself recently earned the "Silver" Certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the Green Building Certification Institute.

Immediately following the dedication ceremony, the Sustainable Academy of Building and Engineering (SABE) will also host a kick-off event for Hoover High School SABE students. SABE focuses on sustainable building techniques and career opportunities in the energy and construction fields.

WHEN:  Tomorrow -- Wednesday, Feb. 29, 8:30 a.m. (rain or shine)

WHERE: Hoover High School, 4474 El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego 92115. The Green Construction Technology building is located on Highland Avenue (west of the campus). Turn north on Highland Avenue from El Cajon Boulevard. Media parking will be available next to the facility (off Highland Avenue).
School phone: (619) 283-6281 School website: http://www.hoovercardinals.org/

VISUALS: Ribbon-cutting ceremony (8:30-8:45 p.m.), followed immediately by a fun team building event in which students work on a derby car project. There will also be displays on alternative energy and fuel efficiency vehicles, as well as an interactive display on the San Diego Energy Truck.

GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS: Hoover High School students and principal, area superintendent, College, Career & Technical Education director and teachers; Sustainable Academy of Building and Engineering students/staff, and Facilities Planning and Construction/ Prop. S executive director. (Spanish as well)

BACKGROUND: The Green Construction Technology Program will provide career and technical education in the residential and commercial construction career pathway within the building trades and construction industry sector. In addition to the coursework in English, math, science and humanities requirements for entry into a University of California or California State University, the program at Hoover High will also provide the following sequence of technical education courses in this career pathway: introduction to green technology (grade 9), construction technology (grades 9 & 10) and fine woodworking (grades 11 & 12).

The nearly $3.9 million Green Construction Technology Facility was funded by San Diego Unified School District's Proposition S and a California Proposition 1D grant. The project partners for the new facility were Group Cristilli Architects and Soltek-Pacific Construction. Construction began in August 2010 and was completed in December 2011. The facility's design meets the most respected standards in the district, state and nation for sustainable design and green building strategies. These standards are established in the High-Performing School Program, LEED Green Building Rating System and the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS).

WHERE: 4961 64th Street (92115) Media parking will be available on site. Directions from College Avenue: Drive east on Montezuma Road, south on Art Street, east on Mesita Drive to 64th Street. (School phone: 619.287.1182)

VISUALS: Approximately a thousand students will parade around the perimeter in an Olympic-style opening ceremony. After remarks by the guest speakers, the event will culminate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony with city and school district officials, the school principal, students and community members.

GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS: Marti Emerald, District 7 councilmember; Kevin Beiser, Board of Education trustee; Stacey LoMedico, City of San Diego Park and Recreation director; Veronika Lopez-Mendez, Language Academy principal; Mike Kenny/Robert Henderson, members of Friends of the Language Academy Organization. BACKGROUND: The multipurpose field is scheduled to be open to the public next month (March 2012). The field is approximately1.4 acres of school district property that was a decomposed granite playfield for its Language Academy (formerly Montezuma Elementary School). Utilizing $1265 million in Community Development Block Grant funds and Developer Impact Fees, the City of San Diego developed the field with project partners Estrada Land Planning and Hellas Construction. The improvements include a new multi-sport field using synthetic turf, field track, parking and accessibility for people with physical disabilities.

Established in 1948, and updated in 2002, the city and the school district have a long-standing agreement to maximize shared use of schools and/or park land to mutually benefit the city and the school district. The facilities shared by the city and the school district include multipurpose turf fields, lighted athletic fields, tennis courts, gymnasiums, parking facilities, and libraries. In total, the school district and the city currently have 73 joint-use agreements.

NEWS RELEASE -- San Diego Unified, School Police Agree on Revised Contract

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, Feb. 10, 2011

SAN DIEGO UNIFIED, SCHOOL POLICE AGREE ON REVISED CONTRACT FOR 2012-13
SCHOOL YEAR

SAN DIEGO An agreement in principle has been reached between the San
Diego Unified School District and San Diego Schools Police Officers
Association to amend the Memorandum of Understanding between the district
and the Association for the 2012-13 school year. A Tentative Agreement
will be presented to the Board of Education and the POA membership for
ratification next week.

The agreement continues furloughs the officers have taken in the 2010-11
and 2011-12 school years and keeps current salary levels in place, among
other changes.

The Association represents sworn officers in the San Diego Unified School
District Police Department. It is the first bargaining unit to step
forward, enter into negotiations and reach an agreement with the district
on contract revisions for 2012-13.

Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education President, said he hopes this is
just the first employee group to help with the district's fiscal situation.

"School police have taken the first step with us toward a new era of
collaboration with our employee partners," he said. "We are all in this
together, with our students, and the future of our community is at stake."

Full details of the agreement will be posted on the district's website at
www.sandi.net/budget.

"This is an important step toward handling the cuts imposed on us by the
State of California," said Superintendent Bill Kowba. "We salute our
police officers for their dedication to the students and sacrifice that
they and their families are making in this time of need."

San Diego Unified continues to ask all of its bargaining units for
assistance in closing a potential $122 million budget reduction for the
2012-13 school year.

"We value the need to maintain a safe environment so our students can
continue to excel," said Jesus Montana, President of the Police Officers
Association. "We understand that in this budget crisis, we all need to
tighten our belts.

"Our officers will continue to make sacrifices for our students' needs."
There are a variety of organizations that represent employees at San Diego
Unified, including groups that represent teachers, office workers, bus
drivers and administrators.
