MEDIA ADVISORY - Junior Achievement and San Diego Unified School District announce new historic partnership to impact 7, 000 students this year

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

October 21, 2016

****MEDIA ADVISORY****

Junior Achievement and San Diego Unified School District announce new historic partnership to impact 7,000 students this year

Collaboration brings every 10th grader to Mission Fed JA Finance Park to teach them how to plan for career and financial success after high school

SAN DIEGO—On Tuesday, October 25 Junior Achievement and San Diego Unified School District will host a press conference to announce a new partnership to impact 7,000 students this school year. The collaboration will merge JA’s mission of educating students about work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy with the District’s commitment to prepare today’s students to compete in the global economy.

The partnership brings every 10th grade student in the District to Mission Fed JA Finance Park.

The program helps students decide what happens after high school as they plan for education, career and financial success. When students come to the Park, they receive a “life situation” and income based upon a real San Diego job they choose in the classroom. Students must then apply for a home loan, purchase a car, shop for groceries, make investments, save for the future, all while balancing a monthly budget. At the end of the day, students connect what they are learning in school to the real world of adult responsibilities.

WHEN: Tuesday, October 25

TIME: 10:30 A.M. – 11.30 A.M.

WHERE: Junior Achievement of San Diego County, 4756 Mission Gorge Place, San Diego, CA 92120, (MAP)

WHO:

Superintendent Cindy Marten, San Diego Unified School District

Genevieve Clark, San Diego Unified School District

10th Grade Students, Kearny High

Marla Black, President and CEO, Junior Achievement

Martha Phillips, Career Center, Mission Fed JA Finance Park

KEY QUOTES:

Superintendent Cindy Marten, San Diego Unified School District:  "Our partnership with Junior Achievement is about so much more than simply helping our students achieve financial literacy. Together, we are unlocking the genius in every student and helping each girl and boy discover what career path may one day match her or his skills, interests and abilities. I’m confident the lessons our students learn through Junior Achievement in the 10th grade will benefit them for a lifetime.”

Marla Black, President and CEO at Junior Achievement of San Diego County:  “We built Finance Park to prepare students for what happens after high school. When young adults learn how to manage personal finances, explore various career paths and plan for their future, they will reach their full potential and dream for a brighter future.”

VISUALS: After the press conference, media is invited to tour Mission Fed JA Finance Park and interview students from Kearny High School about their experience and challenges to meet a monthly budget.

STATS:

•           Nearly 60 percent of today’s teens don’t think they will be ready to financially support themselves by the time they turn 24, according to a 2014 survey conducted by Junior Achievement USA and Allstate Foundation.

•           Did you know California received an “F” grade in teaching students about financial literacy? According to 2015 study by the Center for Financial Literacy, California is one of eleven states that have few requirements, or none at all, for personal finance education in our high school.

•           Nearly half of all teens don’t know how to create a simple budget, according to a 2014 survey conducted by Junior Achievement USA and Allstate Foundation.

NEWS RELEASE: San Diego Unified and other districts collaborate to find solution to teacher shortage, and veteran and spouse unemployment issues

News Release from the San Diego Unified School District, Oct. 13

San Diego Unified and other districts collaborate to find solution to teacher shortage, and veteran and spouse unemployment issues

School districts across the nation partner to increase interest in educational careers; San Diego Unified to host Veterans and Families Career Fair Nov. 19

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Unified School District is among 12 large urban school districts that are collaborating for the first time to help solve major issues—finding new sources of effective teachers and education-related support staff while providing opportunities for veterans and spouses to continue to serve in their own communities.

Large urban school districts are facing many hiring obstacles at this time - lack of diverse candidates; fewer teacher applicants and smaller substitute pools; lack of candidates for support staff jobs like bus driver, IT, diesel mechanic, security, instructional aide, food service positions.

Conversely, sequestration and drawdowns are unexpectedly forcing many military members and their spouses to leave the military to look for opportunities to work and continue to serve. They join the ever-growing number of veterans who left voluntarily and struggle to find work.

The week following Veterans Day, 12 large school districts are going to become part of the solution.

Anchorage, Dallas, Dayton, Clark County (Las Vegas), Los Angeles, Jefferson County (Louisville, KY), Miami, Milwaukee, New York City, Washoe County (Reno), San Diego, Tulsa, which are all members of the Council of Great City Schools, are joining together to bring veterans and their spouses to events around the country that illustrate all of the employment opportunities present in large urban school districts.

Eight others (Baltimore, East Rouge, Minneapolis, Orange County—Ft Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Portland and San Francisco) are helping with the planning and will be joining in the next joint effort during the week of Memorial Day.

The San Diego event will be held on November 19, 2016, 8:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. at Scripps Ranch High School, 10410 Treena Street, 92131. The San Diego Unified School District Veterans and Families Career Fair will offer veterans, active duty completing their commitment within a year, their spouses and family members opportunities to learn about careers in the field of  education. Those with college degrees who are interested in a career in teaching will be shown how to enter the classroom as fully credentialed teachers. Those who are not interested in teaching will be shown the wonderful support positions available in each participating district.

Teachers who are moving from out of state will have an opportunity to speak with staff to learn about transferring their licenses/credentials in the California system. Participants will be provided the opportunity to speak with staff to learn about the application and interview process as well as how to get hired in the district.

On-site interviews will be held for the following positions:

● Substitute clerical positions

● Substitute teachers

Participants who are interested in working as classroom assistants can participate in the Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE). The $7 fee will be waived for this event.

Participants are encouraged to register online:

NEWS RELEASE - New Arts Plan ‘Will Change Young People’s Lives’; Board of Education to vote on proposal at Tuesday’s Board meeting

News Release from the San Diego Unified School District, Oct. 3, 2016

New Arts Plan 'Will Change Young People's Lives'; Board of Education to vote on proposal at Tuesday's Board meeting

SAN DIEGO - Already in the middle of an increased focus on the arts, the San Diego Unified School District has released a dramatic new plan that promises to transform young lives through the arts.

The just-released Strategic Arts Education Plan calls for expanded access to dance, music, theatre, and visual arts across San Diego Unified, including new collaborations with city arts institutions and allowing more students to attend arts magnet schools. City cultural leaders stood with San Diego Unified Visual and Performing Art Director Russ Sperling to unveil the plan, October 3, as 4th grade students performed on newly-purchased violins at the Rosa Parks Elementary School.

"The new instruments, band uniforms and sheet music arriving in our schools this year are really only the beginning," said Sperling. "Over the next five years, we plan to promote literacy, innovation, creativity, and excellence in the arts to change the lives of our students. It is a citywide effort, and we are grateful to have the planning participation of every leading arts institution in the city."

The San Diego Unified Strategic Arts Education Plan (SAEP) was more than seven months in the making and included teachers, parents, students, and representatives from city arts organizations, including the San Diego Opera, Symphony, Ballet, Art Museum, the La Jolla Playhouse, the Old Globe Theatre and many others. Among the key elements of the plan are:

•           Increased access to dance, music, theatre and visual arts for all students

•           An updated arts education curriculum

•           Expanded partnerships with the city's leading cultural institutions

•           Allowing more students to attend arts magnet schools

The Board of Education has scheduled a vote on the new Strategic Arts Education Plan (SAEP) for Tuesday, and Trustee Sharon Whitehurst-Payne is predicting passage.

"Communities across San Diego are hungry for more arts programming," said Whitehurst-Payne. "That is why we voted to provide students with more than 900 new instruments, new band uniforms and visiting artist teachers in the budget we passed this year. I am confident we will do even more to bring high quality arts programs to every school in every neighborhood."

San Diego Unified has a history of leadership in the arts and recently lobbied successfully for the passage of AB 2862. Signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown last month, the law recognizes the arts as central to a well-rounded education and provides for an updated

curriculum in the arts.
