Media Advisory from the San Diego Unified School District, Aug. 29, 2018

Teacher, student being recognized by American Heart Association for student's use of Hands-only CPR to save a life

WHAT: A former Golden Hill K-8 student recently used her Hands-only CPR training to save the life of a young relative. The student received training last year from her teacher at Golden Hill, Robin Carby. Carby is receiving an award from the American Heart Association for her efforts to teach this life-saving technique (the student has chosen to be recognized privately).

WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 30 at 9:15 a.m.

WHERE: Golden Hill K-8, 1240 33rd St. (92102)

BACKGROUND:

In 2016, San Diego Unified partnered with the American Heart Association and the County of San Diego to begin offering Hands-only CPR training to students in the district using a $100,000 grant from the County.

The Hands-only CPR training is designed for students in grades 3-12. Most physical education teachers in the district have been trained, and in turn, many have trained their students. In just two years, thousands of district students have received training.

The former Golden Hill student is the second San Diego Unified student who has used their Hands-only CPR training to save a life. In September, Green Elementary third grader Dmitri Meram helped save his mother's life after she bumped her head and passed out.

MEDIA ADVISORY

Children Experiencing Homelessness to Receive Supplies for First Day of School

Mayor Faulconer, One San Diego, New Fire Chief to Distribute Donations to School Where More Than 30 Percent of Students Are Without Stable Housing

SAN DIEGO – Working to ensure children experiencing homelessness can show up to the first day of class with the tools to succeed and confidence to learn, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer will join One San Diego on Tuesday to distribute supplies at a school where a third of students are identified as homeless. As the school supplies list grows each year, families in need often struggle to find a way to buy the necessary materials. More than 6,000 San Diego Unified School District students experienced homelessness during the 2017/2018 school year, living in situations where they lacked a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.

New San Diego Fire-Rescue Chief Colin Stowell and the San Diego Association of Realtors will also be present to help educate families on fire preparedness as the fall fire season picks up. And the Helen Woodward Animal Center, which offers a “Pets Without Walls” program to help the pets of homeless families, will be on hand.

One San Diego’s “We Have Your Back” campaign, which runs through Friday, is donating a total of 3,125 backpacks containing school-approved materials – including notebooks, pencils, erasers, glue sticks, crayons and calculator – to five schools from Barrio Logan to Lincoln Park.

Partners include the San Diego Association of Realtors, U-Stor-It Self Storage, San Diego Zoo, Helen Woodward Animal Center, San Diego Padres, Cox Communications, San Diego Unified School District, and San Diego police and fire departments. Additional service providers, such as CalFresh and Neighborhood House Association, will be present to provide resources for families.

One San Diego is committed to enriching the lives of local youth through the support of quality educational opportunities, enhanced afterschool programs, job readiness and skills training, and college access education. Donations to help expand the program and assist more children can be made at 1sandiego.org/donate
