News Release

Take a Virtual Tour of Hoover High School's Transformation

September 22, 2020

SAN DIEGO - Drive down El Cajon Boulevard in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego and you will find a transformed Herbert Hoover High School.

The old counseling and administration buildings have been torn down and replaced with modern learning facilities that have dramatically restored the school's historic frontage on El Cajon Boulevard.

Drone & Ground video/stills of the classroom & PAC can be found here

Designed with extensive community input, the project is inspired by Spanish-style architecture that combines an old-fashioned schoolhouse concept with an energy-efficient modern design.

WATCH: Virtual Tour of Hoover's New Classroom and Performing Arts Buildings.

With a new three-story building housing 20 classrooms and student services support spaces, the tower that featured prominently in the original Hoover High School, and long beloved by the Hoover community, has been brought back as part of this project.

Adjacent to the new classroom building and tower, a state-of-the-art 500-seat theater was also constructed. The theater includes a box office with professional studio light controls, a shade structure, a concierge desk, modern performance stage, stage lighting, red curtains, a control room and a stage camera that streams the show live to a front lobby TV.

Directly supporting Hoover's Visual and Performing Arts program, the new theater has two instructional classrooms, one of which has vertical windows that lead to a new outdoor courtyard and stage that links the existing campus to the new facilities.

Additional amenities in the theater include dressing rooms, makeup spaces, costume storage spaces, a costume construction room and walls that will celebrate supporters of Hoover's VAPA program.

This project has also improved campus security with new security cameras throughout the project area and a key card entry system in the new buildings. New security technology has been added to the student services front desk, allowing staff to screen visitors before they enter campus.

Ornamental gates secure the front entrance during a school day, creating a controlled visitor point of entry.

Supporting student health, the new theater and classroom buildings have filtered hydration stations and vaping detectors in bathrooms.

New landscaping has been provided throughout the project area, and the parking lot off El Cajon Boulevard has been improved, including a student drop-off and pick-up loop, handicap parking and expanded staff parking.

More information about the project and other projects are here: http://fpcprojects.sandi.net

NEWS RELEASE: San Diego Unified School District

News Release

San Diego Unified Releases 2020-21 Student Enrollment
District Leaders Continue to Caution Against Kindergarten Gap Year, Registration Remains Open

September 18, 2020
SAN DIEGO – Three weeks into the 2020-21 school year, student enrollment numbers released by the San Diego Unified School District show a decline in kindergarteners, underscoring concerns among district leaders who have stressed the importance of early-childhood education.
As of Sept. 16, 2020, 100,348 students were enrolled in district schools, 2,474 below the projection issued before the COVID-19 pandemic. The largest group of students not enrolled falls into the Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten grade levels, representing 1,682 students, or about two out of every three of all unenrolled students.
As the benefits of early childhood education are well-documented, families that have not yet enrolled their 5-year-olds in kindergarten are encouraged to do so.
"Those early grade-levels are critical times in the life of a student. They set a child up for success in later grades, not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well," Superintendent Cindy Marten said. "I encourage families to enroll their children in kindergarten now to establish that connection with their schools and to begin their San Diego Unified education."
San Diego Unified's online instruction model includes live, daily teacher interaction and independent learning opportunities. All kindergarteners are issued a district Chromebook and may receive free daily breakfast and lunch at 81 distribution sites around the district.
"You simply can't get that kindergarten year back," Board Trustee Sharon Whitehurst-Payne said. "Kids soak up so much at that age," Whitehurst-Payne said. "Whether it's online or in-person, engaging with a teacher and fellow kindergartners is essential to a child's progress."
An advocate of early-childhood education for all, Whitehurst-Payne has expressed disappointment that the Governor vetoed AB197 for mandatory kindergarten in California. She is hopeful the Legislature will take it up again next year.
During online instruction, even the youngest students are receiving the benefits of peer interaction, both inside and outside of class time. One way that's being fostered is through interactive social pods, like those organized throughout McKinley Elementary School for those who have signed up for kindergarten.
"All of the staff members who have kinder-age children are enrolling their kids in kindergarten, which shows the importance," McKinley Principal Deb Ganderton said. "If my son were of school-age, I'd enroll him."
San Diego Unified is reaching out to families in the district that still have not enrolled their children in school, with special focus on TK/Kindergarten. Families are encouraged to enroll <https://sandiegounified.org/departments/neighborhood_schools_and_enrollment_options> their children for kindergarten to begin their K-12 education, and to establish a connection with their San Diego Unified school community.

MEDIA ADVISORY: San Diego Unified Expands Food Access with Weekend Meals

After advocating that the U.S Department of Agriculture change course on proposed cuts to the federal school lunch program, the San Diego Unified School District will celebrate the expansion of its curbside grab n' go meals program to include breakfast and lunch for the weekend. All students will now be able to receive 14 nutritious meals each week. Students or their parents/guardians are encouraged to visit any of the 81 meal pick-up locations throughout the district from noon to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday to receive their breakfast and lunch. An extra breakfast and lunch to save for the weekend will be provided on Thursdays and Fridays, beginning this week. The district Food & Nutrition Services Department had previously been providing these extra weekend meals during the summer, however due to certain waivers having not been extended by the USDA, those meals were suspended. At the urging of San Diego Unified leaders and legislators, including Congresswoman Susan Davis and Congressmen Scott Peters and Juan Vargas, the waivers have been restored to bring back weekend meals through Dec. 31, 2020, or as long as current funding allows. District leaders continue to urge the USDA to fully fund these extensions so that students have access to these important meals throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Demolition Marks Next Phase of Crawford High School Transformation

September 15, 2020

SAN DIEGO - Construction crews are leveling much of Crawford High School’s aging facilities to make way for a modern, state-of-the-art campus in the latest of a series of dramatic renovations taking place in communities throughout the San Diego Unified School District.

Ground video of the demolition can be found here

Drone video of the demolition can be found here

3D Flyover Video of the Future Crawford High School can be found here

The demolition underway at Crawford is the newest phase of school improvements in the Colina del Sol neighborhood. Just last year, the community saw the completion of a new, state-of-the-art classroom and student services facility at Mann Middle School.

Demolition this week of Crawford’s old auditorium will make way for a striking three-story facility that will rise up from Colts Way. The contemporary new design will feature a performing arts center, 20 classrooms, student services offices, and a secure campus entrance through the new administration office suite.

“A college-like setting,” Superintendent Cindy Marten  said of the new facility coming to Crawford. “By the end of this project, every corner of Crawford will have been upgraded.”

Once the new building is complete, the existing administration building will also be demolished to make way for expanded on-campus parking and an off-street student drop-off and pick-up loop.

This latest project at Crawford comes on the heels of campus-wide renovations to existing classrooms, support spaces, and essential building systems, like fire alarms and emergency communication systems. The renowned College and Career Technical Education Transportation program, which provides students the opportunity to learn key skills that can help them excel in mechanics, engineering, and aviation, has been expanded and fully renovated.

Celebrating Crawford’s rich sports history, the Colt’s athletic program facilities have already been renovated, including the stadium, track, tennis courts, and baseball and softball fields.

“This latest project will be the icing on the cake,” school board Trustee Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne said . “We have always said we are committed to VAPA, sports, and STEAM.  All of these projects at Crawford over the last few years are the manifestation of those commitments.”

Construction on the new performing arts center and classroom building is anticipated to complete in spring 2023.

For more information on this project or other projects at your school, please visit http://fpcprojects.sandi.net.

BACKGROUND:
