Enrollment Shows Slight Decrease
132,000 K-12 students officially enrolled for 2009-10
SAN DIEGO San Diego Unified School District¹s official enrollment for the
2009-10 school year is 132,000 students, marking a slight decline after two
years of increases.
This year¹s enrollment, including charter schools and infants and
preformals, is a slight decline of 814 from last year. Even with this
decline, San Diego Unified is still the second-largest school district in
California. The official enrollment is taken on the fourth Friday of the
school year.
³This small decline in enrollment is the result of many factors, including
the overall economic climate impacting San Diego¹s school population, said
Bill Kowba, interim Superintendent. ³As we head into another difficult
budget year, maintaining our enrollment numbers will be one of our key
goals.²
Among the 180 district-operated schools, there was an 865 student decline,
while the 35 charters increased by 151 students. Two new charter schools
opened in 2009-10 (King Chavez High School and Gompers Prep Academy), and
two closed (Memorial and Cortez Hill Academy).
³San Diego Unified schools remain the best educational choice for San Diego
families as demonstrated by the continued improvement in our test scores and
other student achievement measures. Maintaining that educational quality
will help us retain and attract more students in the years ahead,² said
Kowba.
In 2008-09, enrollment increased by 705, while in 2006-07 it was up 294 over
the previous school year.
