SCHOOLS' POLICE CHIEF DISCUSSES POTENTIAL BUDGET IMPACTS
WHAT: News conference discussing impacts of potential budget cuts on safety
and diverting at-risk students, before Board of Education testimony.
WHEN: 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 26
WHERE: SDUSD Police Headquarters, Eugene Brucker Education Center, 4100
Normal Street (92103)
DETAILS: Don Braun, Chief of the San Diego Unified School District Police
Department, will be discussing testimony he will give to the Board of
Education on Tuesday evening regarding the District's state of emergency
preparedness and the probable impacts of the department's elimination in the
face of a projected $141 million budget cut for the 2011-12 school year. The
district's police department currently is on the list of services to be
eliminated, although action has not yet been taken by the Board of
Education. In light of the recent school shooting in Carlsbad and the
hazardous material (mercury spill) at Mission Bay High, Braun will talk
about the department's role in responding to emergencies on campus, as well
as how school police officers help keep schools safe and students secure.
He will also discuss the impacts on schools and the city if the San Diego
Police Department is asked to take over responsibility for our schools.
PHOTOS/SPEAKERS: San Diego Unified School District Police Department
facilities will be open for viewing, including the dispatch center,
Emergency Operations Center and mobile communications van. In addition to
Chief Braun, several school principals are also expected to attend; Board of
Education members may be available for comment.
