Point Loma High School Dedicates New Two-story Classroom Building and Sports Medicine Facility Tomorrow

WHAT:  San Diego Unified School District is inviting community members, industry professionals and project partners to an open house and dedication ceremony for a two-story classroom building and sports medicine facility at Point Loma High School.

The new building has eight classrooms. Six come equipped with 21st century technology for the district's new interactive classrooms. The remaining two classrooms house the sports medicine examination and rehabilitation areas that will be utilized by participants in the school's College, Career & Technical Education Sports Medicine Program. This program prepares students for careers in the health science and technology industry. It also includes classes such as health care essentials, physiology and sports medicine.

WHEN:  Tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011); 10:45 a.m. to noon.

WHERE: 2335 Chatsworth Boulevard (92106) The classroom building is located on the northwest side of the campus (site map attached). Media parking will be available on site. Directions: Int. 8 west (becomes Ocean Beach Freeway) to end of freeway; turn left and merge to Nimitz Blvd. (left lanes); continue on Nimitz Blvd.; turn left on Chatsworth Avenue.

VISUALS: Presentation of colors by Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours of classrooms and sports medicine facility.

GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS: Barbara Samilson, principal; Shelia Jackson, Board of Education member; Matt Spathas, Prop. S Independent Citizens' Oversight Committee member and Point Loma HS parent; Lee Dulgeroff, interim executive director, Capital Bond Improvement Program (Prop. S); and Jeff Sullivan, director, Athletic Training Education, Point Loma Nazarene University (partner in sports medicine program). Students will also be available for interviews. (Interviews available in English and Spanish)

BACKGROUND: On November 4, 2008, nearly 69 percent of the voters in San Diego passed the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure, Proposition S, so that San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) could repair, renovate and revitalize more than 200 schools. 

The project partners for this facility were gkkworks Architectural Services and Soltek Pacific Construction.
