SAN DIEGO UNIFIED CHEFS COOK WITH LOCAL FARMERS
WHAT: Workshop with San Diego Unified School District kitchen managers and
staff, with local farmers on use of fresh, locally grown fruits and
vegetables.
WHEN: 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011
WHERE: Lincoln High School food services kitchen, 4777 Imperial Ave.
(92113)
DETAILS: Local farmers and chefs will be conducting a training class for
San Diego Unified central kitchen staff on the use of locally grown
vegetables in salad bars and (coming this spring) in entrees. Continuing a
remaking of school cafeteria food that began eight years ago, San Diego
Unified School District's cafeterias this year will have even more fresh,
locally grown produce on the menu in 2011-12. The farmers and local chefs,
along with district Food Services Department staff members will dice,
slice and cook the locally grown goodies during the workshop, then cooking
them up for lunch in menu items that will be at the schools this spring.
They'll also be talking about the better nutritional value, lower carbon
footprint and local jobs created when San Diego's kids are able to eat
what's grown right here in the county.
VISUALS/INTERVIEWS: Local farmers, chefs and food service workers will be
chopping, preparing and cooking -- then eating locally grown produce.
Media members are invited to taste-test the dishes, which are scheduled to
be on the menu starting in early 2012. Farmers and other grow-local
advocates, as well as district staff will be available for interview. The
morning will wind up as they all cook and eat lunch; reporters are invited
to taste-test the dishes.
