5 -- Labor Day holiday. All schools and offices closed.
6 -- First day of 2011-12 school year. Supt. Kowba will be at Clairemont
High School, 4150 Ute Dr. (92117) from 6-7:15 a.m.; Wilson Middle School,
3838 Orange Ave. (92105), 8-9 a.m. (includes the start of school at 8:30
a.m.); and at Juarez Elementary School, 2633 Melbourne Dr. (92123).

10 -- Pt. Loma High Kickoff Event, all day, Pt. Loma High School, 2335
Chatsworth Blvd. Following freshman, junior varsity and varsity football
games at the school, the Pointer Association will hold its annual
fundraising dinner. Contact: Pt. Loma High Foundation, Maria

17 -- Guitars in the Classroom Benefit Concert, 7 p.m., Montgomery Middle
School, 2470 Ulric St. (92111). The Banana Slug String Band performs a fun
family evening complete a teacher-led opening sing along, a door prize
drawing, and a special after show pajama party for family golden circle
ticket holders. Doug Dirt and Airy Larry will bring out the music,
costumes, and share wisdom from the garden and nature to raise money for
free Guitars in the Classroom music leadership training for San Diego
teachers. All ages are encouraged, and children may attend in jammies so
they can roll right into bed when they get home. Tickets are $8-15, with a
$100 whole family, Golden Circle Pajama Party ticket available; tickets
are at purchased at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/191069.

22 -- Clairemont Community of Schools, 7 p.m., Marston Middle School, 3799
Clairemont Drive, (92117). Parents, staff, students and community members
interested in supporting the schools in the Clairemont High School feeder
pattern (Alcott, Bay Park, Cadman, Holmes and Toler elementary, Marston
Middle and Clairemont High schools) are invited to join the Clairemont

20 -- ³Building Healthy Communities,² 6 p.m., Lincoln High School, 4777
Imperial Ave. (92113). The Community Wellness program presents: James P.
Comer, MD, MPH, a nationally renowned child psychiatrist, will discuss
promoting collaboration among parents, educators and the community to
improve social, emotional and academic outcomes for students. Sponsored by
the Lincoln High School Youth Health Council and UCSD Center for Community
