BACKGROUND: Morse High School's new CCTE Child Development Center is a one-story, steel-framed facility constructed on an existing campus parking lot. It features a play area for toddlers, as well as a 4,900-square-foot building that contains a high school classroom, toddler daycare classroom, infant nursery, a play area with play structures, and ancillary spaces for restrooms, administration, storage, and utilities. The project also includes new landscaping, irrigation systems, hardscape for a play area, as well as a vehicle access road around the site. The nearly $3.3 million CCTE project was funded by San Diego Unified's Prop. S and a state matching-fund grant, Prop. 1D. The project was completed during summer 2012.
The local Prop. S funds are being used to match the state's Proposition 1D Career & Technical Education grant monies so that the district can provide new and/or renovated facilities to accommodate CCTE programs. At Morse High School, the newly completed CCTE facilities include auto body, culinary arts and child development.
On November 4, 2008, nearly 69 percent of the voters in San Diego passed the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure, Prop. S, so that the school district could repair, renovate and revitalize its schools. These bond funds cannot be used to pay teacher or school administrator salaries.
Thanks to Prop. S, the school is also receiving technology upgrades as part of the district's i21 Interactive Classroom Initiative. In addition, the stadium was completely rebuilt with a new press box, concession stand, restrooms, all-weather track, synthetic turf field and other amenities. Future Prop. S projects include a new two-story classroom building and a whole-site modernization project.
The project partners for the new Child Development Center were Platt-Whitelaw Architects and Suffolk-Roel Construction.
