MEDIA ADVISORY -- Media Calendar from the San Diego Unified School
District, September 27, 2013

Your coverage is invited of any of the following upcoming events on the
campuses of the San Diego Unified School District. For more items, check
out the calendar on the front of the district website at www.sandi.net.

Please note that if items are listed as "not open to the public," that
means accredited members of the media are invited, but the general public
is not. These are generally items during the school day.

OCTOBER

* 4 -- Clairemont High Pride in the Tribe, 4 p.m., Clairemont High School,
4150 Ute Dr. (92117). Clairemont High School invites all past, present and
future Chieftains, their families and the community to attend a very
special Pride in the Tribe event. Come celebrate the past, present and
future of Clairemont High School and meet new principal Dr. Jennifer
Roberson and new Superintendent Cindy Marten. The event is free and will
feature activities for all ages including campus tours, art projects, a
homecoming rally and food trucks. Contact: Dr. Jennifer Roberson,

5 -- Oktoberfest benefitting University City Schools, 2-6 p.m., Standley
Park and Recreation Center, 3585 Governor Drive (92122). Sponsored by
EdUCate, the University City schools' foundation, the event will include
games for kids, Standley Middle School's marching band and food. Contact:
president@uc-educate.org. Open to the public.

* 5 University City High Cheer Clinic, 9-11 a.m., University City High
School, 6949 Genesee Ave. The Centurions varsity cheer squad will hold a
two-hour clinic for future Centurion cheerleaders (elementary and middle
schoolers). For $20, kids get expert instruction, snacks, t-shirt and hair
ribbon for game day, and get to cheer in front of the UC High fans at that
night's game vs. arch rival La Jolla High. Contact: Jeff Olivero,

5 -- San Diego County Office of Education "Salute to Teachers," 7 p.m.,
Balboa Theater, 868 4th Ave. (92101). Sponsored by Cox Communications and
the San Diego County Office of Education, the program announces the San
Diego County Teachers of the Year, which may include winners from San
Diego Unified. In addition, two San Diego Unified teachers will be
receiving special awards: Lara Dickens from Henry High School has been
named the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation 2013 Environmental Educator,
and Patrick Trotter from Bethune K-8 has been named the Procopio 2013
Science and Technology Educator. Contact: Music Watson, San Diego County

7 -- La Jolla High School Cluster Meeting, 3:30 p.m., La Jolla High
School, 750 Nautilus St. (92037). Parents, students and community members
are invited to attend this meeting, which discusses educational issues at
the high school and its middle and elementary schools. Schools in the La
Jolla cluster are: Bird Rock, La Jolla and Torrey Pines elementary
schools; Muirlands Middle School and La Jolla High School. Contact: Pat

* 9 -- Holmes Elementary School Walk to School Parade, 8:30 a.m., Holmes
Elementary School, 4902 Mt. Ararat Dr. (92111). Celebrating International
Walk to School Day, Holmes joins schools throughout San Diego Unified. The
event encourages parents to walk their kids to school for benefits of
exercise, less traffic and pollution and getting to know their

* 12 -- Supplemental Education Services Meet the Provider Fair, 10 a.m. to
2 p.m., Lincoln High School, 4777 Imperial Ave. (92113). The "Meet the
Providers Fairs" are an excellent opportunity for parents and students to
meet the different tutoring organizations listed below that are contracted
to provide SES Free Tutoring to eligible students. Participating
organizations will be there to answer your questions and provide you with
information regarding their individual programs. If you plan to attend
one or both of these fairs, please remember to bring your child's
application that you received in your mail. SES Staff will be available
to assist you and accept your applications in person. Contact: Andrea

* 17 -- Great California Shakeout, 10:17 a.m., all schools. As part of the
statewide Great California Shakeout, San Diego Unified schools are
conducting a full-scale earthquake drill, including duck-and-cover in
classrooms, school evacuation procedures, and reporting into School
Police. One school will be selected for media coverage. Contact: Linda

* 17 -- Supplemental Education Services Meet the Provider Fair, 2:30- 6:30
p.m., Lincoln High School, 4777 Imperial Ave. (92113). The "Meet the

to provide SES Free Tutoring to eligible students. Participating
organizations will be there to answer your questions and provide you with

18 -- 60th Anniversary Homecoming, 3 p.m., Mission Bay High School, 2475
Grand Ave. (92109). Bucs play longtime rivals Kearny at 3 p.m. Contact:

18 -- Spreckels Elementary School Spooky Sprint Jog-a-Thon, 11:30 a.m.,
Spreckels Elementary School, 6033 Stadium St. (92122). Fundraiser for PTA
and school, event brings community support and helps promote exercise.
Contact Dr. Cecilia Fernandez, Principal, (858) 453-5377. Open to families
and volunteers.

* 25 -- Loma Portal Elementary Monster Bash, 5-8 p.m., Loma Portal
Elementary School, 3341 Browning St. (92106). There will be carnival
games, grade-level costume contests, crafts, cake walk, face painting,
bake sale, food from local restaurants, cookie & pumpkin decorating and
much much more. And not to be missed, the annual Haunted House, courtesy

* 25 -- Deadline for Supplemental Education Services applications.
Supplemental Education Services are required to be available under the
federal No Child Left Behind act for students who attend schools on
Program Improvement. For more information, go to the program website at

Curie¹s Annual PTA Holiday Craft Fair has been famous for more than three
decades for its variety of homemade items. Information:
