NEWS RELEASE -- Board of Education Discusses School Success and Opportunity Act

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, January 14, 2014

BOARD OF EDUCATION DISCUSSES SCHOOL SUCCESS AND OPPORTUNITY ACT

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Unified School District's Board of Education will
discuss changes to policy as a result of the new School Success and
Opportunity Act (AB 1266) at today's 5 p.m. meeting.

The changes to district policies and procedures are considered minor but
will ensure that all rights of children in San Diego Unified schools are
respected and protected, in compliance with the Act.

"AB 1266 aligns with the district's Vision 2020 to create quality schools
in every neighborhood," said Superintendent Cindy Marten. "We believe that
quality schools provide a supportive environment that values diversity in
the service of all students."

Since September, a multi-disciplinary team has been working on the formal
implementation of the new law.

The proposed policy changes are scheduled to be reviewed at tonight's
Board meeting.

"We respect all rights and provide accommodations for all our students,"
said Board of Education President Kevin Beiser. "For many years, educators
have been handling this in a delicate, thoughtful and compassionate
manner; that will continue."

The new law, which took effect January 1, reflects practices that have
been in place at San Diego Unified School District schools for many years.
San Diego has based its procedures on those used in the Los Angeles
Unified School District for more than a decade.

The Board of Education is scheduled to discuss the changes at its meeting
that begins at 5 p.m. at the Education Center Auditorium, 4100 Normal St.
The public is invited to attend. The meeting will be streamed online at
sandi.net/board and shown live on iTV cable channel 16 within the
district's boundaries.
