Council President Lightner, Councilmember Cate to Review Student Proposals to Repurpose Former Downtown Library
SAN DIEGO --- San Diego City Council President Sherri Lightner announced that on Thursday, January 21, 2016, she, Councilmember Cate, and Board of Education President Michael McQuary will attend the Kearny High School Stanley Foster School of Architecture and Engineering Junior Gala, at which time the students will present their designs to repurpose the City’s former downtown library into a Veteran’s Center.
Every year, students focus on a design problem. This year, they have partnered with the City through the “Bridges to Education” program, in which the City supplies a real-world architecture or engineering project, and allows students full access to facilities and staff. City staff then mentor students and provide feedback on their design solutions.
“I have always been a supporter of civic engagement,” stated Council President Sherri Lightner. “The ‘Bridges to Education’ program allows students full access to actual city projects under the guidance of city staff. Having a mentorship relationship strengthens student learning and allows city staff to educate and foster the next generation of our workforce.”
