Renown Mission Bay High Preservationists Set Fundraiser for New Orleans
Performances

San Diego's Boogie Woogie Queen, Sue Palmer, headlines a March 17 fundraiser
to help the nationally known Mission Bay High School Preservationists jazz
band to raise the remaining $10,000 for its April performances in legendary
Preservation Hall in New Orleans.

The New Orleans performance will allow the Mission Bay students, aged 16-18,
to experience one of jazz's most famous venues, as well as meet and learn
from jazz greats in New Orleans.

"This will be a great experience for our students," said Jean-Paul Balmat,
director of the high school's music program. "There are a relatively few
professional musicians that are able to play at Preservation Hall, much less
students in high school."

The fundraising performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, March 17, at
the Pacific Beach Woman's Club, 1721 Hornblend St, San Diego, CA 92109.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the event. More information at
www.missionbaymusic.com.

The program is sponsored by the Mission Bay Band Boosters, a 501(c)(3)
non-profit that supports the Mission Bay High music programs.

Today's Preservationists continue a tradition of more than 30 years at
Mission Bay High School, a magnet high school in Pacific Beach. Jean-Paul
Balmat, the current music director, is the second former Mission Bay High
music student to return as to his alma mater and teach.

"Our program is nationally known, which sets a very high standard for our
students," said Balmat. "This is the kind of program that motivates kids to
work hard in school, to graduate and continue their education."

Music is a major draw to the school, which uses International Baccalaureate
academic standards. Mission Bay High draws many of its students from
communities outside of the beach areas, with some students spending more
than an hour each day on bus rides to school.

The Preservationists have performed at the Sacramento Music Festival, San
Diego Jazz Festival, House of Blues, Jazz Education Network Conference, KUSI
News, Fox 5 News and KSDS Jazz 88.3-FM.

More than $5,000 for the trip has already been raised for the trip, with
major contributions from the Mission Beach Woman's Club, Pacific Beach
Woman's Club, La Jolla Woman's Club, LSU Alumni Association, America's
Finest City Traditional Jazz Society and the San Diego Jazz Party.

The Preservationists will be performing with San Diego diva Palmer at the
March 17 event. Best known for her beehive-wearing stint with blues diva
Candye Kane in the '90's, Palmer has been making her mark in the last decade
with her high energy band, the Motel Swing Orchestra, and her flashy boogie
woogie stylings.
