San Diego Unified announces substantial expansion of arts and music programs for the fall
SAN DIEGO – Students in San Diego Unified schools will have access to more musical instruments, new band uniforms and a vast library of sheet music come the new 2016-17 school year. The focus on the arts was announced last week as part of the Superintendent’s priorities for the district’s 2016-17 Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and 2016-17 budget, which are scheduled for a final vote by the Board of Education at their June 28, 2016 meeting. For more information about the district’s 2016-17 LCAP, visit www.sandiegounified.org/lcap .
"Our schools have produced many professional artists over the years, including several Academy Award, Grammy and Emmy winners,” said Russ Sperling, Visual and Performing Arts Director. “Our arts programs are a tremendous resource that benefit all our students."
Among the arts highlights in the proposed budget for next year are:
• More than 900 new instruments will be provided for students
• More than 10,000 songs on sheet music will be cataloged
• 30-year-old band uniforms will be replaced
• Visiting-artists will teach at 22 schools
