BACKGROUND: Construction on the San Diego Unified's largest culinary arts facility began at the end of 2015. The existing nutrition classrooms in Building 4 at Mira Mesa High School were completely renovated, transforming them into new, state-of-the-art culinary arts classrooms. The more than $2.7 million project included new mechanical ductwork distribution systems, plumbing systems, floor and wall finishes, as well as new food services equipment and furnishings. Construction was completed during the summer of 2016.

This project was funded by San Diego Unified School District's Proposition Z bond measure passed by voters in 2012 for capital improvement projects. The district receives the bond funds in increments when bonds are issued approximately every two years. The funds cannot be used to pay teachers' or administrators' salaries, nor can they be used for maintenance and operations.
