San Diego Unified with the Government of Mexico to Offer Bi-National Students New Educational Resources
WHAT: A delegation from San Diego Unified will visit schools in Mexico as part of its commitment to support bi-national students with a donation of resources aimed at bridging the educational gap for students attending school across the border. In an effort to ensure that all students have access to a quality education, no matter which side of the border they reside on, San Diego Unified will visit a school and meet with educators, accompanied by the Department of Education of Baja California. The team will deliver educational resources, including books and curriculum.

WHERE: Office of the Mexican Consulate, 1549 India St, San Diego, CA 92101
DETAILS: San Diego Unified School District leadership, along with resource teachers and the department of Family and Community Engagement will embark on the Mexico visit Friday January 25 at 8:00 a.m.

BACKGROUND: The state of Baja California has been welcoming large numbers of US-born students. Over the past six months, more than 1,200 U.S. born students between the ages of 6 and 15 have enrolled in schools in the state of Baja. The Department of Education of Baja California reports that there are currently 55,404 U.S. born students receiving their education within Baja California schools, that engage in a cross-border education. Frequently traveling to and from the U.S. and Mexico for a variety of reasons. Parent deportation, the cost of living, and family obligations are among the reasons students transfer to Mexican schools. In some cases, U.S. born students leave their schools in the United States and enroll in a school, where they do not speak or comprehend the language.
