BACKGROUND: San Diego Unified welcomes immigrant students from around the world, with over 75 languages spoken across the district. To support these students and their families, the district opened the Newcomer Welcome Centers in the 2024-25 school year.

These centers are located at five high schools, providing newly arrived students with information about enrolling in San Diego Unified, as well as access to the district’s academic, athletic, and social opportunities. In addition, the centers offer resources related to community services, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, and mental health support.

The Newcomer Welcome Centers are funded by a $1.7 million grant from the City of San Diego and are currently open one day a week at each of the following schools:

  • Monday: Hoover High School
  • Tuesday: San Diego High School
  • Wednesday (every other week): Mira Mesa High School
  • Thursday: Lincoln High School
  • Friday: Crawford High School
