NEWS RELEASE -- Kearny International Business, Mt. Everest Academy are Distinguished Schools

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, April 12, 2012

KEARNY INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS, MT. EVEREST ACADEMY, HEALTH SCIENCES
CHARTER ARE DISTINGUISHED SCHOOLS

SAN DIEGO -- The School of International Business at the Kearny High
Educational Complex is a California Distinguished School for the second
time in four years, joining independent study oriented Mt. Everest Academy
and charter Health Sciences High on the 2013 list released Thursday by the
California Department of Education.

The state makes the awards to middle and high schools on odd-numbered
years, elementary schools on even-numbered years. For a list of past San
Diego Unified winners go to
http://www.sandi.net/site/default.aspx?PageType=12&DomainId=12&ModuleInstan
ceId=8407&DisplayType=T

"Each of the students, principal, staff, parents, volunteers and the
entire school community should be saluted for excellent work," said
Superintendent Bill Kowba. "This is exciting news for each of these
campuses."

The 2013 California Distinguished Schools Program directly focuses on the
right of California¹s students to an equitable and rigorous education, and
recognizes those schools that have made progress in narrowing the academic
achievement gap, according to State Superintendent Tom Torlakson.

³These schools have gone the extra mile to provide high-quality
instruction that puts their students on the right path toward career and
college,² Torlakson said. ³Given the enormous challenges schools have
faced in recent years, it is inspiring to see this kind of success in so
many schools. Our future depends on meeting the needs of every student no
matter where they come from or where they live.²

To apply for Distinguished School honors, schools must meet a variety of
eligibility criteria, including accountability measures. Once schools are
deemed eligible, the California Department of Education (CDE) invites them
to apply to be recognized as a California Distinguished School.

The application process consists of a written application, which includes
a comprehensive description of two of the school's signature practices,
and a county-led site validation review process, which validates the
implementation of those signature practices.

WHERE: Point Loma High School, 2335 Chatsworth Boulevard (92106) school website: http://www.pointlomahigh.com/
The event location is near the school's administration office. (Call 619-546-3378 or e-mail creed-porter@sandi.net for site map and parking information.)

VISUALS: Student demonstrations and tours of the new Motion Pictures Industries facility (after the ceremony). The tour includes a screening room, video editing rooms, audio suite, studio, and audio-video hub. GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS: Barbara Samilson, principal; Richard Barrera, board trustee; Jade Martz and Robert Tharp, both seniors in the Motion Pictures Industries Program; Lee Dulgeroff, executive director of Facilities Planning and Construction/Prop. BACKGROUND: The Point Loma High School Motion Pictures Industries Program provides career and technical education in the media and design arts pathway of the arts, media and entertainment industry sector. The program prepares students for additional education or for entry-level work in the motion pictures industries. These are important industries in California, and there is a high-demand labor market for qualified technical employees in this field. The California Employment Development Department (EDD, 2012) predicts that California will create 12,900 new jobs for the motion pictures and video industries between 2010 and 2020, an increase of 9.1 percent in the respective industry.

Point Loma High School's new CCTE Motion Pictures Industries facility includes a screening room, video editing rooms, audio suite, studio, audio-video hub, interactive whiteboard, construction tool shed (for building sets), and an instructor's office. This $3.6 million project involved remodeling a 4,804 square-foot portion of the school's Building 900. Construction began in January 2011 and finished in Nov. 2012.

On November 4, 2008, nearly 69 percent of the voters in San Diego passed the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure, Prop. S, so that San Diego Unified could repair, renovate and revitalize district schools. (By law, bond funds cannot pay for teachers' or administrators' salaries.) For information on Prop. S projects at Point Loma High School see the school's facilities projects web page at https://fpcprojects.sandi.net/Pages/Reports.aspx?SchoolName=9354.

NEWS RELEASE -- SD Unified's Graduation Rates Continue Improvement; Most Dropout Rates Decline

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, April 10, 2013

SD UNIFIED'S GRADUATION RATES CONTINUE IMPROVEMENT; MOST DROPOUT RATES
DECLINE
District still has lowest dropout rate among California's largest school
districts

SAN DIEGO -- A three-year trend of increasing graduation rates has
continued for the San Diego Unified School District, which had 86.9
percent of its students graduate in 2012, an increase of 1.6 percent over
2011 and 4.7 from 2010, according to data released April 9 by the
California Department of Education. San Diego Unified leads the San Diego
County average by 8.4 percentage points.

Only one large school district in California had a higher graduation rate
than San Diego Unified's 86.9 percent: Garden Grove with 87.8. Other large
districts ranged from San Francisco's 82.2 to Oakland's 73.2. San Diego
Unified's overall dropout rate of 6.2 percent was the lowest among the
nine other large urban largest districts in California, with San Francisco
the next lowest at 10 percent.

"This continued improvement means that our district, and most importantly
our students, are on the right path," said Superintendent Bill Kowba. "To
have a nearly five percent jump in just three years shows the outstanding
work done every day by everyone in the San Diego Unified School District."

Across San Diego County, the graduation rate is 78.4 percent with a
dropout rate of 10.4 percent, 4.2 percentage points above the county's
largest school district. The statistics report the overall graduation
rate, which is the number of students attending in ninth grade who get a
diploma. The dropout rate is the number of students entering grade 12 but
fail to graduate.

³Attendance figures build on each other," said Kowba. "If the kids are
coming to school day in and day out at every grade level and keep moving
up the ladder and don¹t let up on that emphasis, I think we¹re in a great
place.²

Since 2007, reducing the dropout rate has been one of the district's top
priorities, not only focusing on high school seniors, but starting early
-- as early as sixth grade. Studies show that student who miss 10 days or
more in sixth grade have a higher high school dropout rate than their
classmates who miss fewer days.

"Even with these outstanding overall numbers, the statistics show we were
unable to make an impact on Hispanic students last year," said Kowba.

Among Hispanics, while the dropout rate was unchanged at 9.9 percent, the
graduation rate rose to 80.2 percent from 78 percent. Among other large
ethnic groups, African Americans' dropout rate declined to 7 percent from
7.7 percent and the graduation rate increased to 83.9 from 81.8 in 2011
and 76.9 in 2010.

Programs such as graduation coaches, credit recovery, providing more
options for high school students on campus have been instrumental in
improving the graduation rate, said Kowba. In 2012, state Superintendent
of Schools Tom Torlakson called San Diego Unified a "model of attendance
improvement."

STEVEN SPIELBERG¹S LINCOLN SCREENED AT LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL

The two-time Academy Award® winning film will be gifted for school use

Los Angeles, CA and San Diego, CA April 9, 2013 Participant Media,
working together with Big Picture Instructional Design, has selected local
Lincoln High School as one of only 15 high schools from around the country
to receive an award as part of their national Stand Tall: Live Like
Lincoln High School Screening Campaign.

Chad Boettcher, Executive Vice President of Social Action and Advocacy at
Participant Media, said, "Prior to the film's release, we engaged Penn
Schoen Berland to conduct a research study to help inform the focus of our
Social Action campaign for Lincoln. Among the findings of the study was
that more than half of Americans think it's important to learn about
Lincoln, but two thirds say they know little to nothing about him, which
clearly indicated the need to remind citizens about the 16th President's
accomplishments."

As a result, this unique high school screening campaign, ³Stand Tall: Live
Like Lincoln,² is designed to use the film to spark educational
conversations on the film's themes of leadership, civic engagement and
public service. Discussions will be facilitated using Disney's
distributed curricula as well as a series of standards-based extension
activities and discussion prompts that were crafted by Big Picture
Instructional Design. Throughout the month of April, the film will be
screened at 15 different high schools in 15 different states across the
country. In addition to receiving their own copy of the film and its
accompanying collateral materials, all the schools will receive a package
of brand new audio-visual equipment.

Steven Spielberg directs two-time Academy Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis
in ³Lincoln,² a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President¹s
tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the
strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end
the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and
fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment
will change the fate of generations to come. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis,
Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal
Holbrook and Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln is produced by Steven Spielberg and
Kathleen Kennedy, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, based in part on the
book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris
Kearns Goodwin.
