San Diego Unified Issues Student-Inspired PSA to Bring Attention to Mental Health Awareness

April 30, 2021

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Unified students have collaborated on a Public Safety Announcement (PSA) in an effort to promote mental health awareness following a year of unprecedented social distancing brought on by the pandemic.

To be issued throughout May in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the PSA<https://bit.ly/3eDdga9> features student voices, resources and support. The video follows the establishment of the 16-member Student Wellness Education and Resources (SWEAR) Committee<https://swearcommittee.wixsite.com/sdusd> last summer, and a resolution adopted by the Board of Education in January recognizing the importance of student well-being and health.

Hannah Griswold , a senior at University High School, and Catherine Delgado, a senior at Mira Mesa High School, founded the SWEAR Committee to help educate students on coping mechanisms for basic wellness and also on serious mental health illnesses that could affect them, their classmates, or family. The committee pledged to support student wellness efforts by having student representatives from every district high school. The committee is working to make mental health an essential factor in education and wellness initiatives in the district.

On May 25, the Board of Education will recognize Mental Health Awareness month by voting on a resolution and showcasing the PSA.

"Students have been going through quite a bit," San Diego Unified counselor Allison Penn said. "Uncertainty about what the future holds, when to see friends and family again -- these are all issues that students are coping with."

Penn hopes that the PSA encourages students to reach out to their counselors to find mental health resources. The SWEAR Committee works with Penn and other counselors to connect teachers, counselors, administrators, and district officials to each other in order to share important resources, coordinate efforts, and create valuable connections.

"Some students are creating a story of their experiences during this pandemic by journaling and writing. Others have turned to exercise as an outlet," San Diego Unified head counselor Jason Maher said.

Maher and Penn believe the PSA will serve as a small step towards removing the stigma around mental health so students can begin to feel more confident reaching out to fellow students, teachers, counselors and family for help.

*District staff and representatives are available to speak to the media.

MEDIA AVAILABILITY: San Diego Unified Schools Reopen Classrooms for In-Person Learning in All Grade Levels

WHAT: San Diego Unified School District will reopen classrooms in all grade levels to students whose families have opted to return to in-person instruction, while continuing to provide instruction online to those who prefer to continue their education from home. District officials will be available to discuss all aspects of reopening – from academics to meal distribution to safety mitigations.

WHEN: Monday, April 12, 8:30 a.m.

WHERE: Encanto Elementary School, 822 65th St., San Diego, CA 92114
BACKGROUND: San Diego Unified educators and support staff are ready to welcome students back into classrooms. The San Diego Unified Back to School Guide<https://sandiegounified.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0842714cdcd339c51096304b8&id=068818808d&e=ab7413129f> includes information and resources for families.

Students and teachers returning to campus will wear masks and follow social-distancing protocols. Schools have air filters, hand sanitizer, and social-distancing signage, among other safety mitigations.

UC San Diego will conduct COVID-19 testing on campuses for students and staff who are participating in onsite learning and are asymptomatic. Testing will be mandatory for staff. The goal is to test every eligible student and staff member every two weeks. The tests will be administered in campus auditoriums and multi-purpose rooms by medical professionals from UC San Diego Health in conjunction with staff members from the district's health office.

Full meal service will continue to be available both to students participating in-person learning and online. San Diego Unified will offer nutritious breakfast and lunch daily to all students participating in on-site learning. Take-home dinner will also be available. MEDIA ADVISORY: San Diego Unified Encourages Families in Need to Apply for City's Rental Assistance Program

Board of Education President Richard Barrera, District Leaders Join Mayor Todd Gloria, Congressman Juan Vargas, Councilman Sean Elo-Rivera, San Diego Housing Commission CEO Richard Gentry Raise to Raise Awareness of Program

WHAT: San Diego Unified School District representatives will join with City leaders and the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) to promote the COVID-19 Housing Stability Assistance Program. San Diego Unified will distribute more than 15,000 flyers about the program at its regularly scheduled food distributions Monday through Friday, from noon to 2 p.m. at 19 locations throughout the district.

WHEN: Monday, April 5, 10 a.m.

WHERE: Clark Middle School, 4388 Thorn St, San Diego, CA 92105

SPEAKERS: Board of Education President Richard Barrera, Mayor Todd Gloria, Congressman Juan Vargas, Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera and San Diego Housing Commission President & CEO Rick Gentry

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 Housing Stability Assistance Program is a federally funded program administered by SDHC for the City of San Diego. The online application is available at covidassistance.sdhc.org<https://covidassistance.sdhc.org/>. More than $83 million is available through the COVID-19 Housing Stability Assistance Program to help qualifying households with rent and utility payments. Immigration status does not affect whether or not a household qualifies for help from the program.

San Diego Unified recognizes the many challenges families have faced over the past year, including the struggle to pay rent due to new economic hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Housing instability and the added stress that goes along with it can have negative impacts on the well-being and academic achievement of students.

All students deserve the opportunity to thrive and enjoy the benefits that come with stable housing.

This event is for professional journalists. Please confirm attendance in advance.
