NEWS RELEASE: San Diego Unified Condemns Decision to Rescind Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals “DACA”

News Release from the San Diego Unified School District, Sept. 5, 2017

San Diego Unified Condemns Decision to Rescind Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals "DACA"

SAN DIEGO -- Today, President Donald Trump acted to remove the protections afforded to thousands of immigrant students under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Despite this decision, San Diego Unified School District wants to firmly assure students and parents that we remain committed to protecting the rights of every child to an education. All children are welcome in our school community.

The mission of public schools is to create opportunity—not for some children, but for all.

We are better off as a nation thanks to the contributions of immigrants regardless of their legal status. Rescinding the rights of these dreamers is an injustice to the American People.

Statement from Superintendent, Cindy Marten:

"The DACA program has helped bring thousands of talented students and teachers to our classrooms, many of whom have become doctors, police officers and firefighters - contributing members of our communities. Rescinding this program not only impacts the legal status for thousands of immigrant children and families who make our city and our schools great, but the emotional toll is immeasurable. This action is unacceptable and as a district we will fight to protect the rights of the students we serve and deeply care for."

Statement from School Board President, Richard Barrera:

"Under the DACA program, our immigrant students gained the hope and confidence that – like every other student – they would have the opportunity to work hard, graduate, go to college, find work and go on to lead meaningful lives. It is unconscionable to leave these young people in limbo. They deserve to know that the adults in our community will support them. They deserve to know that if they work hard and do their best, they will succeed. That is why it's time for Congress to act."

WHAT:  Grant K-8 New Facilities Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Back to School Night.

WHEN:  Thursday, September 7 at 5:30 p.m.

WHERE:  1425 Washington Place, San Diego, CA 92103 (event and parking map is attached).

VISUALS:  A community celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new facilities at Grant K-8. Program includes a student band, a student singing the National Anthem, and district speakers. Students and district leaders will cut a red ribbon before initiating Back to School Night.

GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS:  San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten, Board of Education President Richard Barrera, Facilities Planning and Construction Chief Officer Lee Dulgeroff, Principal Kathy Lorden.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:  This $12,000,000 project included the construction of a new classroom building, new cafeteria, outdoor lunch court, and new parking lot. The new classroom building is an 8,400 SF, two-story, eight-classroom building with a data/technology room. Within this building are 5,800 SF of new cafeteria, food service, lunch court, educational support, and storage. To make way for the new building, eight portable classrooms were removed, and five relocatable classrooms were repurposed on campus.

The new parking lot provides 42 spaces, of which 37 are standard, three are designated for fuel efficient vehicles, and two are accessible. The lot also includes a new kindergarten drop off area and new landscaping.

Improvements to existing buildings include classroom air conditioning, a new intercom system, and fire alarm system. The site received an electrical service upgrade, a new eight-inch water line for fire safety, sewer improvements, and storm water improvements. The scope of work was developed with consideration for educational and facility needs, and with public comment received during a series of community meetings.

BACKGROUND:  This project is funded by San Diego Unified School District’s Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified. Prop. S is a 23-year capital facilities program that is funded by a $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 4, 2008. Prop. Z is a 15-year capital facilities program funded by a $2.8 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 6, 2012. By law, the funds cannot be used for teachers’ or school administrators’ salaries, nor can they be used for maintenance or operations.
