Wave of Improvements Arrive at Pacific Beach Middle School as Demolition Starts Campus Transformation

WHAT:

Principal Kimberly Meng and San Diego Unified Board Trustee Dr. Mike McQuary will hold a media availability as construction crews take their first steps in demolishing an aging classroom hall. There may also be students, parents, or neighbors, watching the demolition.

WHEN:

Wednesday, July 10, 2019

8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

Please note: both Principal Meng and Dr. McQuary will leave the site at 9:00 a.m. due to prior engagements. The district can accommodate media for any live opportunities earlier than 8:00 a.m.

WHERE:

Pacific Beach Middle School, 4676 Ingraham St., San Diego, CA 92109

*Crews will be positioned on the Diamond St. side (see map below).*

Please note: due to safety concerns, media will not be allowed into the demolition area, or inside the construction area. However, district staff will be positioned so media can see the excavator demolishing the building.

VISUALS:

Excavators, students, renderings. Renderings for this project can be found here.

Please note: San Diego Unified will hold an official groundbreaking in late fall, so this would be a great video opportunity of the action.

GUEST INTERVIEWS:

Dr. Mike McQuary, San Diego Unified School Board Trustee

Kimberley Meng, Pacific Beach Middle School Principal

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The Whole Site Modernization at Pacific Beach Middle School includes construction of a new two-story classroom building and three new classrooms in the existing library media center, and renovation and expansion of existing food service facilities. The new two-story classroom will replace two aging buildings on the Northeast corner of the campus along Felspar St. When complete, it will include innovative work spaces, 26 classrooms, and state-of-the-art technology.

This project will also complete the new and safer entrance to the campus from the new parking lot on Felspar St. by relocating administration offices.

Heating Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) will also be upgraded in the existing science classroom building, media center, and auditorium.

The project is anticipated to complete in winter 2021.

BACKGROUND:

San Diego Unified’s capital projects are funded by San Diego Unified School District’s Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical  Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified.

MEDIA ADVISORY from the San Diego Unified School District

Monday, July 1, 2019

MEDIA ADVISORY: San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten Continues Tradition of 13th Annual Student Camping Trip

Some 90 Central Elementary School third-graders head to Stelzer County Park to go camping (many for the first time) with support from the Jarrett Meeker Foundation

WHAT: Central Elementary third-graders head to Louis A. Stelzer County Park to experience nature and the outdoors.

WHEN: July 1, 2019 – July 3, 2019

Media Coverage is available from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. throughout the camping trip.

Superintendent Cindy Marten will be available for interview at the campsite Tuesday, July 2 from 7:30 a.m. - 8:15 a.m.

WHERE: Louis A. Stelzer County Park, 11470 Wildcat Canyon Rd, Lakeside, CA 92040

DETAILS: Third-graders from Central Elementary School in City Heights will once again experience traditional camping rituals (sleeping in tents, eating s'mores, sharing stories and singing songs around the campfire) when they head out on the school's annual camping trip to Louis A. Stelzer County Park on July 1, 2, and 3. This is the 13th annual trip supported by The Jarrett Meeker Foundation, and is the first time many of these inner-city students have been camping.

In addition to experiencing the fun of camping, students will be exposed to a standards-based learning experience that includes Kumeyaay history, storytelling, artifacts and games; birds of prey presentation and owl pellet dissections; and native plant and wildlife education. San Diego Unified Superintendent and former Central Elementary principal, Cindy Marten, will continue her tradition of joining the students on the trip the morning of July 2.

"The children from Central Elementary live in the middle of the city with very little opportunity to experience the outdoors," Marten said. "The camping trip helps connect students to the wonders of wildlife, fosters the desire to be good stewards of the environment and gets them outside, unplugged."

The campers will spend the evening toasting marshmallows, telling stories, singing camp songs, gazing at the stars through telescopes, and settling into tents when it's time for lights out. Campers will awaken the next morning to the smell of hot pancakes.

The Jarrett Meeker Foundation is a local non-profit organization that provides programs related to wildlife, conservation and the environment for children and young adults in San Diego County. The foundation was established in 1987 in memory of 8-year-old Jarrett Meeker after his accidental death. Jarrett's family was inspired by his love of nature. The foundation and the work that it does is Jarrett's gift—his legacy – and keeps his memory alive. Since 1987, JMF has provided once-in-a-lifetime educational experiences to more than 100,000 children representing over 50  schools throughout San Diego County.
