MEDIA ADVISORY: Free Military Appreciation Event to Assist Military Families in Preparation for New School Year

WHAT: The San Diego Unified School District serves more 9,000 military-connected students each year. Many are new to the area and will be entering a new school in San Diego Unified on August 26, 2019. To help make the transition easier for these families and get a head start on back-to-school preparations, the district, along with the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, is hosting a Military Enrollment Event. Parents will have the opportunity to enroll new students in the district (appointments are available; walk-ins are welcome) and get vaccinations required for school enrollment (courtesy of Naval Medical Center San Diego). All attendees will receive a free lunch and students will receive free school supplies, courtesy of San Diego Unified Food and Nutrition Services Department.

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.: Volunteers from the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard will help staff set up for the event.

9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Hundreds of families will have the opportunity to enroll their student(s), gather helpful information from military and community organizations and district departments, receive free school supplies and free required immunizations, if needed.

11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Free BBQ Lunch

Background: The San Diego region has the largest concentration of military anywhere in the world with over 140,000 active duty personnel and civilian employed with the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Veterans Administration, and Reserves of all branches of service.  San Diego Unified recognizes the strong military presence and is dedicated to serving military families who may not be able to visit San Diego Unified during regular office hours. In collaboration with Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, San Diego Unified began holding this enrollment event in 2009 as a way to offer a one-stop shop for registration and other school information to prepare military families for the new school year.
