Former Students Resolve Claims Regarding Teacher Conduct 

Wednesday, April 26, 2023

San Diego - Several former students have resolved their claims regarding the conduct of a now retired La Jolla High School teacher. Due in part to the efforts of Loxie Gant, one of the claimants in this matter, the district convened a task force in 2018 to review its policies and procedures for handling allegations of sexual assault, which has resulted in changes and improvements that have since been implemented. The district will continue to review and update these policies annually to remain current and consistent with the latest improvements in best practices and laws. The district respects the courage of the claimants in this matter for speaking out and remains committed to making the safety of its students a top priority.

SAN DIEGO -  Reusable water bottles are now in the hands of 20,000 more students across San Diego. 

 

Made possible through the Rob Machado Foundation, the reusable bottles went to San Diego Unified School District students at 50 schools. The foundation also donated 500 reusable water bottles to Chavez Elementary students in April 2022 to encourage students to drink more water and cut plastic pollution from local landfills, waterways, and the ocean.

 

On Friday, students at Penn Elementary School received surprise water bottles from the foundation during Penn’s annual jogathon. The water bottles follow the school district’s completion of hydration stations at the Bay Terraces campus. 

 

“We are a proud supporter of the San Diego Unified clean water program,” said Rob Machado, Founder of the Rob Machado Foundation. “Making a pledge to put a reusable water bottle into the hands of every student is a big commitment for the foundation and we are honored to deepen our support for students.” 

 

As a result of a six-year-long district initiative to provide clean drinking water to all students, the high-quality filtered hydration stations replace old, unfiltered, drinking water outlets at all San Diego Unified schools. 

 

“With filtered water bottle filling stations at all schools and reusable water bottles in the hands of 20,000 students, access to clean water has never been better at San Diego Unified,” said Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, Board of Education Trustee for San Diego Unified. “I am grateful to the Rob Machado Foundation for supporting student health and the broader environment.”

 

Supported by the facilities bond program, San Diego Unified set a public health goal of water with lead content below one part per billion (ppb)  and an action level of 5 ppb  - three times the federal standard - through the use of filtered systems. 

 

While all San Diego Unified schools have received temporary filtered water bottle fillers, construction continues on the installation of additional permanent filtered hydration stations and the removal of all unfiltered drinking water outlets districtwide. The district is prioritizing schools with the youngest students first.  

 

Construction is complete at 49 schools and ongoing at another 33.  Construction districtwide is expected to be complete by the end of 2024. The Rob Machado Foundation plans to donate an additional 25,000 reusable water bottles to students with the goal of eventually reaching every San Diego Unified student

Bill to compensate student board members moves forward

First Hurdle Cleared for Student Board Members to Potentially Earn Compensation for Service to School Districts 

AB 275 Passes California Assembly, Headed to Senate

San Diego - In a move supported and sponsored by the San Diego Unified School District, student board member representatives throughout the state are one step closer to being eligible to receive paid compensation for serving on district or county school boards.

AB 275, introduced in January by Assemblymember Christopher Ward (D-78th Dist.), was unanimously passed on the Assembly Floor 67-0 on April 10 and now moves to the Senate. The bill would authorize a school district or county board of education to award a student board member financial compensation, elective course credit, or both. 

Currently, student board members in California are prohibited from receiving financial compensation for their service. Of the more than 420 school districts serving high school students in California, more than 270 have one or more student members on their school board.

“Our district thrives when it recognizes students as leaders, and engages in shared decision-making with them,” Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson said. “Student board members deserve more than just praise. They deserve compensation for their work.”

San Diego Unified has two student board members: Lea Nepomuceno, a senior at Scripps Ranch High School, and Matthew Quitoriano, a sophomore at San Diego High School. The district has a requirement that one seat come from a student attending a school where at least 60 percent of the student body qualifies for free or reduced-priced meals. 

On March 22 in Sacramento, Nepomuceno testified before the Assembly Committee on Education in support of AB 275. 

“Every student's voice matters,” Nepomuceno said. “Finances shouldn’t be the barrier preventing any student in the state from pursuing a seat on their respective Board of Education.”  

San Diego Unified district leaders recognize that the lack of a stipend can create a hardship for students who might otherwise seek a student board position. Student school board members attend board meetings, represent the student population in discussions, advocate for issues of concern to the student body, and help guide the governance process of their school districts. 

“Student board members play a vital role in California schools by representing the student voice and sharing their perspectives with the board,” said Assemblymember Ward. “I am proud to author AB 275 so they can receive compensation for their time and work, and continue to help solve issues that impact students across the state.”

AB 275 does not specify the amount of compensation that would be offered for a student board position, but rather would leave that determination to each respective governing board.  

If approved by the Senate this year, AB 275 would head to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk for his signature. If signed, the bill would become law and take effect Jan. 1, 2024.

Spring Festival Focuses on Employee Mental Health and Wellbeing

For the second year in a row, San Diego Unified School District is hosting a spring festival for teachers and district staff focused on mental health and wellbeing. Employees are invited to explore the various resources available to them regarding overall wellness.

Community partners will also be on hand to explain benefits available to district employees, including Cal Coast Credit Union, the County of San Diego, VEBA, Kaiser Permanente and UnitedHealthcare.

Attendees will be able to make bike-powered smoothies, take part in health screenings and mindfulness activities, test drive e-bikes, browse and shop from local vendors, and enjoy free refreshments and live music.
