NEWS RELEASE: San Diego Unified, Los Angeles Unified

News Statement

May 7, 2020

Joint Statement from San Diego Unified, Los Angeles Unified School Districts

San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten and Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner issued the following statement in response to the Department of Finance's preliminary estimates on the California State budget and the need for federal relief:

A 20 percent reduction in State funds to public education, which would be about $2,700 less per student, would cause irreparable harm to children. California already spends significantly less on public education than other large states. Los Angeles Unified receives about $17,000 per student (before any cuts) compared with $30,000 in New York.

Students will need more resources to help them make up for lost time in the classroom due to the virus. Moreover, reopening school facilities in a safe manner this fall will also require more funding. Our efforts to enhance the quality of distance learning and provide a safety net to students and families during this public health crisis have been comprehensive and responsive to student's needs. With approximately 240,000 devices and close to 18 million meals provided in Los Angeles and San Diego, the immediate challenges posed by Covid-19 have significantly increased costs for our schools.

Implicit in every budget are a series of choices which are made more difficult when the dollars are scarce. But they are still choices which elected officials in Sacramento must make and the consequences will have an impact on an entire generation of children.
This generation has a right to an education, and a 20 percent reduction in State school spending would deny students this right. Simply put, that level of spending reduction would make it impossible for schools to safely reopen this fall. There is no substitute for learning in a classroom setting and a total reliance on online learning may result in many, perhaps the majority of students, losing the equivalent of a year of their education, permanently damaging their future and exacerbating inequality in our society.

Over the past two months we have found a way to do extraordinary things in our schools to keep students connected and learning and help families in need. Now it's time for the State and Federal governments to find a way to do extraordinary things to make sure we deliver on the promise of a great education for every child in public schools. Each one of them has the talent and we cannot fail to provide them with the opportunity for a great education.

NEWS RELEASE: San Diego Unified Honors Teachers of the Year, Celebrates all Teachers

 NEWS RELEASE

San Diego Unified Honors Teachers of the Year, Celebrates all Teachers

May 5, 2020

SAN DIEGO - Coinciding with Day of the Teacher and National Teacher Appreciation Week, the San Diego Unified School District will honor its 2020 Teachers of the Year while celebrating its some 6,000 teachers throughout the week.

Three outstanding educators have been named San Diego Unified Teachers of the Year at the elementary, middle and high school levels for 2020. Three Teacher of the Year runners-up, and teachers selected as Teachers of the Year by their individual schools, will also be recognized this week.

“Now more than ever, we appreciate the contributions teachers make in the classroom and throughout the entire community,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “San Diego Unified has extraordinary teachers who have demonstrated their dedication, creativity and innovation these past few weeks during our Distance Learning launch. I would like to thank each one of our teachers for everything they do for our students, our families and for our city.”

San Diego Unified will celebrate its Teachers of the Year on its website and with video tributes on social media.

The Teachers of the Year are: Kelly Ann Young, who teaches grades 4/5 at Lindbergh Schweitzer Elementary; Paula Richardson, who teaches music in grades 6, 7, 8 at Wilson Middle School; and Deirdre Fabian, who teaches adapted physical education at Morse High School.

In addition to the three Teachers of the Year, three runners-up were also selected. The runners-ups are Melissa Taleb from Language Academy, Erica Soto from DePortola Middle School and Jill Schenk from San Diego High School SciTech.

The announcement of the Teachers of the Year is made in conjunction with the National Day of the Teacher on Tuesday, May 5, and Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4-8.

All three Teachers of the Year are available for media interviews. Here is more information and videos about this year’s winners:

  • Kelly Ann Young: has dedicated herself to the students in the community where she grew up and continues to live. In her 11tth year of teaching in San Diego Unified, she has developed the philosophy that every effective educator creates learning opportunities for all students who walk through the classroom door at Lindbergh Schweitzer. She states her greatest contribution has been building a classroom community that extends beyond the four-walls of where she teaches and into the community where she lives. https://youtu.be/h1gTaSRl6Yw
  • Paula Richardson: Paula believes it is important that she practices what she preaches. As a music teacher, she is also a musician. In her 13 years at Wilson Middle School, she has expanded the music program to all grade levels, written and received grants and started a Mariachi Ensemble. She states her most important contribution is her passion to provide meaningful music experiences to all students. https://youtu.be/cYEr3Uhi9-E
  • Deirdre Fabian: Deirdre began her teaching career in rural North Carolina. With 29 years of teaching experience, her personal teaching philosophy focuses on putting the students first and creating a teaching environment that allows all students to grow physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. She says her most significant experience is becoming a special education teacher; she absolutely loves this population and the Morse community.  https://youtu.be/A0TXO09na4k

The selection process for district Teachers of the Year is extensive. It begins at the school where nominees are first selected as their school’s Teacher of the Year. These individuals have the option to apply for district Teacher of the Year, a process that includes written essays, interviews and classroom observations. The 2020 Teacher of the Year winners and runners-up were selected by an eight-member committee composed of previous district Teachers of the Year and runners-up. The selection process was completed March 11, the week before schools closed. All district winners and runners-up have the opportunity to apply for the San Diego County Teacher of the Year award program.

  • San Diego Unified’s Teacher of the Year Celebration would not be possible without the generous support from sponsors: California Coast Credit Union, California Schools VEBA, Mission Federal Credit Union, North Island Credit Union, San Diego Education Association, San Diego Education Fund

NEWS RELEASE - San Diego Unified Earns Silver Level Green Ribbon Schools Award from California Department of Education

NEWS RELEASE

San Diego Unified Earns Silver Level Green Ribbon Schools Award from California Department of Education

April 29, 2020

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Unified has been recognized as a statewide leader in sustainability, winning the California Department of Education’s (CDE) Silver Level Green Ribbon Schools designation. The recognition honors schools and school districts for excellence in resource efficiency, health and wellness, and environmental and sustainability education. The CDE convened an interagency stakeholder group to evaluate applicants by demonstrated achievements in three key areas:

Pillar I: Reduce environmental impact and costs

Pillar II: Improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff

Pillar III: Provide effective environmental education, which teaches many disciplines, and is especially good at effectively incorporating STEM, civic skills, and green career pathways

“When we say San Diego Unified is committed to combating climate change and building a more sustainable future, we absolutely mean it,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “It isn’t just about building more sustainable facilities; we are empowering students with knowledge, so they can make lasting changes for the rest of their lives.”

San Diego Unified is one of eight districts recognized by the California Department of Education this year.

The CDE’s recognition is part of a broader effort by the US Department of Education to highlight green practices that engage students and improve academic achievement, graduation rates, and workforce preparedness.

In 2013, The San Diego Unified Board of Education (BOE) established the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee, leading to the District Climate Action Plan which was board-adopted in 2015.The Climate Action Plan outlines several key goals:  1. Increase energy efficiency and renewable energy to achieve 100% clean electricity by 2035; 2. Increase alternative modes of transportation in student and employee commuting; 3. Transition to a cleaner, more efficient vehicle fleet;  and 4. reduce waste and increase water efficiency.
