Details: Allen Ng, Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service, will celebrate National
School Breakfast Week with San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) in
order to highlight the benefits of The Breakfast in the Classroom
Program.

Too many children arrive at school with an empty stomach and too late
for the cafeteria breakfast. To address this problem, SDUSD implemented
a highly effective approach, The Breakfast In The Classroom Program, to
encourage more students to start the day with a nutritious meal. During
the first ten minutes of the school day, students eat breakfast right at
their desks.

Since The Breakfast in the Classroom Program's inception in 2006, the 15
schools currently in the program have increased their average number of
breakfasts served by 350%. For these efforts, SDUSD has been awarded the
USDA's National School Breakfast Expansion Initiative. Due to the
overwhelming success of the Breakfast in the Classroom Program, SDUSD
will continue to implement an additional 27 schools by May 2009,
bringing the total to 42 Breakfast in the Classroom schools.

USDA's School Breakfast Program provides nutritious breakfasts to more
than 10 million school children each school day in over 85,000 public
and private schools. The Program provides healthy breakfasts to enable
children to begin the school day ready to learn.
