Joint-Use Facilities Get a Makeover: San Diego Unified School District and the City of San Diego dedicate newly upgraded joint-use facilities in North Park

WHAT:  San Diego Unified School District Board Member Richard Barrera, San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria will join students, school staff, city and school district leaders, as well as community members at the official dedication of the newly upgraded joint-use facilities adjacent to San Diego Unified School District's ALBA Community School. .

VISUALS: Ribbon-cutting ceremony after remarks from guest speakers, improvements that include a new basketball court, new 30-foot light poles at joint-use playing field, new matting at horizontal bars, a resurfaced joint-use playfield, newly repaired concrete sidewalk areas, new signage and new fencing around joint-use playfield.

GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS: Board Member Richard Barrera, Council President Todd Gloria (available after the event), Principal Vernon Moore, David Monroe, deputy director of the city's Park and Recreation Dept.; and Lee Dulgeroff, executive director of the school district's Facilities Planning and Construction (Proposition S). The school's ASB president and one of the school's mentors, Pastor Brent Hyden of Covenant Presbyterian Church, will also speaking during the program.

BACKGROUND: The cost of this project was approximately $400,000, which was funded by school district's Proposition S bond program.  Construction began in July 2012, and was completed in early November 2012. Project partners were IBI Group (architectural) and GEM Industrial Inc. (construction).

Established in 1948, and updated in 2002, the city and the school district have a long-standing agreement to maximize shared use of schools and/or park land to mutually benefit the city and the school district. The facilities shared by the city and the school district include multipurpose turf fields, lighted athletic fields, tennis courts, gymnasiums, parking facilities and libraries. In total, the school district and the city currently have 76 joint-use agreements.
