Celebration Showcases Students' Talents at CPMA Middle School's New Performing Arts Center

WHAT:  San Diego Unified School District will celebrate the completion of a new state-of-the-art performing arts center and other facility improvements tomorrow at Creative, Performing & Media Arts (CPMA) Middle School with a dedication ceremony, student performances and tours. The school, located in the Clairemont community, received a major facelift and campus-wide renovations in addition to the performing arts center.

WHEN:  Tuesday, Nov. 18, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

VISUALS: 9-9:30 a.m. -- Student jazz band performs as guests arrive (pre-event)
9:30-10 a.m. -- Dedication ceremony with ceremonial ribbon cutting

10:20-11 a.m. -- Tours of the performing arts center and other facility improvements

BACKGROUND: The more than $21 million project at CPMA was funded by Propositions S, one of San Diego Unified's capital improvement bond measures. Construction began during summer 2012. Most of the elements of the project are completed. The few that remain are will be completed this fall.

Performing Arts Center: The new 20,600-square-foot performing arts center was constructed on the east side of the CPMA campus. It includes a 432-seat theater, two music classrooms, scene shop, green room, control room, ticket booths, restrooms, as well as support and storage spaces.

Whole Site Modernization: The whole site modernization included renovations on nearly every building in order to comply with accessibility standards and current building codes, as well as upgrades in heating/ventilation/air conditioning, lighting and low voltage/technology. It also included refurbishing wall, floor and ceiling surfaces, painting the exterior surfaces, as well as installing a new fence and landscaping in front of the school. In addition, the food service facilities were remodeled, a new food service kiosk was constructed, the school's auditorium was remodeled, shower/locker areas were renovated, and walkways were improved.
