MEDIA AVAILABILITY: San Diego Unified Schools Reopen Classrooms for In-Person Learning in All Grade Levels

WHAT: San Diego Unified School District will reopen classrooms in all grade levels to students whose families have opted to return to in-person instruction, while continuing to provide instruction online to those who prefer to continue their education from home. District officials will be available to discuss all aspects of reopening – from academics to meal distribution to safety mitigations.

WHEN: Monday, April 12, 8:30 a.m.

WHERE: Encanto Elementary School, 822 65th St., San Diego, CA 92114
BACKGROUND: San Diego Unified educators and support staff are ready to welcome students back into classrooms. With about 27 percent of students opting to continue their education online, teachers will work to include those learners into the classroom experience. The San Diego Unified Back to School Guide<https://sandiegounified.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0842714cdcd339c51096304b8&id=068818808d&e=ab7413129f> includes information and resources for families.

Students and teachers returning to campus will wear masks and follow social-distancing protocols. Schools have air filters, hand sanitizer, and social-distancing signage, among other safety mitigations.

UC San Diego will conduct COVID-19 testing on campuses for students and staff who are participating in onsite learning and are asymptomatic. Testing will be mandatory for staff. The goal is to test every eligible student and staff member every two weeks. The tests will be administered in campus auditoriums and multi-purpose rooms by medical professionals from UC San Diego Health in conjunction with staff members from the district's health office.

Full meal service will continue to be available both to students participating in-person learning and online. San Diego Unified will offer nutritious breakfast and lunch daily to all students participating in on-site learning. Take-home dinner will also be available. Students participating online learning may pick up meals at 19 curbside meal pick-up locations<https://sandiegounified.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0842714cdcd339c51096304b8&id=0c9822fb9a&e=ab7413129f>.
