Logan Memorial Educational Campus Celebrates Opening of El Nido, First-of-its-Kind Infant and Toddler Montessori Center

December 20, 2024

SAN DIEGO - San Diego Unified School District's first-of-its-kind "cradle-to-college and career" center is ready for business.

A trailblazing infant and toddler Montessori Center in the heart of Logan Heights, El Nido at Logan Memorial Educational Campus (LMEC) held its inaugural parent orientation Friday morning, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony with leaders of the San Diego Unified School District and San Diego State University.

Officially opening in January 2025, the El Nido Infant and Toddler Montessori Center offers an integrated educational experience from infancy through high school graduation and onward, ensuring that students and families have the resources and support they need at every stage of a child's development.

"It has been years of tireless work to bring this vision to fruition, a collaborative effort involving district leaders, LMEC staff, educational experts, and of course, the incredible community that brings LMEC to life," said Dr. Fabi Bagula, San Diego Unified Interim Superintendent. "All of this effort is because we believe that surrounding working families and their students with resources and support will help elevate each student to reach their true and full potential."

El Nido's programs will nurture young learners from birth to preschool by providing high-quality care and early education for infants and toddlers, fostering cognitive, emotional, and social development while laying the groundwork for future academic success.

"As we open our doors, we are not just launching a center - we are building a foundation for something greater—a legacy of love, learning, and community," said Belinda Rico, administrator of El Nido. "El Nido will be a place where every child's curiosity is celebrated, their individuality is respected, and their potential is boundless."

El Nido is part of LMEC's Montessori program for grades prenatal through 3rd grade. Started more than a century ago by Italian Physician Dr. Maria Montessori, Montessori classrooms teach students to work independently and in groups and focus on self-motivation in all areas of their development - cognitive, emotional, social, and physical. UTK-3rd grade students at LMEC have already been involved in the Montessori program - El Nido will bring in the prenatal, toddlers, and preschoolers.

"Every detail, every corner, every element was created to inspire students," said Silvia Martinez, LMEC Director. "We want to celebrate their individuality and to nurture their growth from Cradle-to-College/Career."

El Nido features two 1,454-square-foot classrooms, fully equipped with state-of-the-art Montessori materials and custom-designed furniture. Alphabet of Life carefully selected these essential learning tools and collaborated with San Diego Unified to design the interior spaces tailored to the developmental needs of the age groups occupying the building.

The facility also includes critical support areas such as two storage rooms, restrooms for staff and children, and a dedicated lactation room. Additionally, an outdoor play area has been thoughtfully planned to accommodate two distinct age groups: infants to two-year-olds and children aged two to five.

Both the classrooms and playgrounds are outfitted with developmentally appropriate learning materials meticulously aligned with the Montessori educational philosophy. This intentional integration ensures that the environment fosters holistic development, supports self-directed learning, and nurtures the cognitive, social, and emotional growth of every child.

"Our district's commitment to initiatives like El Nido, affordable and workforce housing, and the Play All Day partnership with the City of San Diego, all of which demonstrate a clear focus on meeting the needs of working families," said Richard Barrera, San Diego Unified Board of Education Vice President.

Made possible by a partnership between the school district and Harvard University, LMEC is the result of a transformational project that brought together Logan Elementary School and Memorial Middle School with a new dedicated high school serving the Logan Heights community and families.

"The opening of El Nido represents a transformative step for our community by providing comprehensive early childhood education and support right here in the heart of Logan Heights," said 80th District Assemblymember David Alvarez. "This facility ensures that families have access to vital prenatal, toddler, and preschool services in a nurturing environment, right next to the Logan Memorial Educational Campus, which I am proud to have supported. Investing in early education and keeping resources close to home ensures our children get the best possible start in life, and our students can continue their education without barriers."

SAN DIEGO (DECEMBER 17, 2024) – The San Diego Unified School District on Tuesday night reaffirmed its commitment to being a "Welcoming District for All Students" when the Board of Education passed a resolution, and earlier in the day the Interim Superintendents Office reinforced its protocols with school administrators and launched a new public website to support any student and family who experiences   harassment, discrimination or bias-based harm.

"While national and global events may challenge our sense of stability, here in our schools, we remain steadfast in one essential truth: every student, regardless of how they identify or where they come from, deserves to feel safe, supported, and inspired to thrive," said Interim Superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula, San Diego Unified School District. "Our responsibility as educators extends beyond academics. We are the architects of environments where young people can dream boldly and learn authentically. I reaffirm our district's commitment as a Welcoming District — a place where students experience belonging, joy, and limitless possibility."

To ensure every student, educator and parent in San Diego Unified school communities feels safe, secure, and seen, the District have taken the following actions:

  • Updated guidance on accessing the District's online incident reporting form. Students or staff wanting to report equity, civil rights, or safety concerns can use the online reporting form here
  • Established a new internal equity, civil rights, & safety reporting hotline for school administrators.
  • New website (www.sdusdequity.com/protecting-students) to help students, families and staff better understand their rights and access information about laws, resources and service providers.
  • Training has been scheduled for District staff to ensure they are able to support students, families and their colleagues should instances of discrimination, harassment and retaliation occur on their school campuses.
  • Established an Equity, Civil Rights, and Safety Task Force to monitor incidents of discrimination, harassment and retaliation, and take appropriate action to address negative trends.
  • The Board of Education "Resolution Affirming and Living the Values of the San Diego Unified School District as a Welcoming District for All Students."

DISTRICT RECEIVES $1.5 MILLION GRANT TO ENHANCE STEAM, SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING AT MILITARY-CONNECTED SCHOOLS
Funds Earmarked for Tutoring, Hands-On Experiences at Seven Elementary Schools

SAN DIEGO (DECEMBER 13, 2024) – The U.S. Dept. of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) has awarded San Diego Unified a $1.5 million grant to enhance STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) instruction at seven elementary schools with a minimum of 10% military-connected students.

The schools where the grant will be dispersed include:

  • Angier Elementary
  • Cabrillo Elementary
  • Chesterton Elementary
  • Dewey Elementary
  • Jones Elementary
  • Mason Elementary
  • Sessions Elementary

The goal of the Operation QUEST (Questioning, Understanding, Experiencing, Sharing and Thinking) grant is to collaborate with the San Diego Unified STEM Department in engaging students in grades TK-5 in interdisciplinary STEAM curriculum. The approach is to expand and enhance problem-based classroom instruction and student-centered instructional strategies that incorporate hands-on experiences and emphasize the development of social-emotional skills.

“San Diego Unified is deeply honored to receive this generous $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). This investment in our military-connected schools reflects a shared commitment to nurturing every student’s potential through innovation and holistic learning,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Fabiola Bagula.

Through Operation QUEST, our youngest learners will engage in dynamic, hands-on STEAM experiences that not only spark creativity and critical thinking but also strengthen essential social-emotional skills. We believe that when students explore, question, and create together, they develop the tools to thrive in both school and life.

We are profoundly grateful for this partnership with DoDEA and look forward to collaborating with our educators, families, and military community to empower every child to reach their fullest potential.”

DoDEA Operation QUEST will create community partnerships, and provide tutoring for students, as well as professional development opportunities for teachers.

“The San Diego Unified STEM Department is excited to support the Operation QUEST grant by collaborating with the selected school sites to expand STEAM instruction,” said Senior STEM Director Julie Garcia. “Through implementing Next Generation Science Standards-aligned curriculum that includes engaging instructional strategies, we hope to promote hands-on learning experiences that help students find success and joy in the learning process.”

Dr. Michele Einspar, Program Manager of San Diego Unified School District’s Children and Youth in Transition department and Co-Leader of the DoDEA Pacific Rim Region, facilitated the collaboration among SDUSD schools and departments to make this grant opportunity possible for our military connected students.

San Diego Unified’s STEM department and district leadership continuously seek innovative ways to build teacher capacity to elevate students’ mastery in English Language Arts, mathematics and science. It is expected that the teachers at the seven identified elementary schools will benefit from grant-funded professional development, aligned with district goals, during the grant period.

Operation QUEST will infuse research-based strategies that weave in social-emotional learning in order to elevate student engagement in English Language Arts, mathematics and science in high-needs schools with a population that includes at least 10% military-connected students to promote mastery of the subject matter, leading to matriculation into honors and advanced placement courses in high school and postsecondary readiness.

DoDEA’s Education Partnership and Resources Division strives to ensure all military-connected K-12 students have access to quality educational opportunities through engagement in partnerships with school districts and professional organizations. The division provides school personnel and stakeholders with evidence-based resources and supports to increase understanding and awareness related to the unique challenges faced by military-connected students and families.

SD UNIFIED BOARD OF EDUCATION SUPPORTS STRATEGY TO REDUCE PROJECTED BUDGET DEFICIT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Media Contacts:

James Canning, Jcanning@sandi.net, 313-580-2845

Mike Murad, Mmurad@sandi.net, 619-925-4790

SD UNIFIED BOARD OF EDUCATION SUPPORTS STRATEGY TO REDUCE PROJECTED BUDGET DEFICIT

$64 million of savings to decrease originally projected $176M deficit to $121M

SAN DIEGO (DECEMBER 10, 2024) – The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education voted unanimously on Tuesday night to certify the First Interim Financial Report for the 2025-26 budget as positive, as Interim Superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula’s Administration continues to drive toward a zero projected budget deficit by June 2025.

“I appreciate the Board’s support for our strategy to get the budget to zero by June of next year,” said Interim Superintendent, Bagula, San Diego Unified School District. “We have a lot more work to do to get there, but I am confident we’re moving in the right direction.”

San Diego Unified School District in just three months has identified $64 million of savings to decrease the District’s projected $176 million deficit to $121 million for the 2025-26 budget year – a 36% reduction since the October projection.

There are some upcoming actions that will help to inform the District’s decisions for how it gets the projected budget deficit to zero.

  • Governor’s Budget – In January, the District will have a better understanding of the funding allocation from the state
  • Supplemental Early Retirement Plan (SERP) -  In January, the enrollment period for the Supplemental Early Retirement Plan will close, which will tell the District how many team members choose to retire.
  • Budget Workshop – In February, the District will have another budget workshop with the community, and that is where the Governor’s Budget, SERP, and all the work we are doing to get to zero, will be shared.
  • Second Interim Report – In March the District will present the second interim budget to the Board of Education, and that’s where they will show how they get from $112 to zero.
  • Lead Up to June Budget Adoption – After the second interim report, the District will continue to work on the budget, make adjustments, issue possible notices for certified or classified employees – if needed, review the Governor’s revised budget, and then in June, the Board of Education will adopt a final budget.
