Board of Education to Recognize Latinx/e Heritage Month During Sept.15 Meeting with Resolution
Celebrating Culture, Identity & Belonging Supports San Diego Unified’s Commitment to Improving Student Wellness
SAN DIEGO (SEPTEMBER 10, 2026) – San Diego Unified School District is proud to recognize National Latinx/e Heritage Month, celebrating the histories, cultures, achievements, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. Latino students and families are an important part of who we are at San Diego Unified. Today, more than 41,000 Hispanic and Latino students attend district-operated schools, representing approximately 44 percent of the district’s Transitional Kindergarten–12 students.
Throughout Latinx/e Heritage Month, schools across San Diego Unified will host events and activities that celebrate Hispanic and Latino cultures, traditions, history, and contributions. These celebrations also provide opportunities for students to see their identities and experiences reflected in their school communities and to learn from the diverse cultures represented throughout the district.
“This month is an opportunity to celebrate the incredible cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions of our Latino students, families, educators, and staff,” said Superintendent Fabi Bagula, Ph.D. “But creating a sense of belonging is work that happens every day. We want our students to see themselves, their families, and their cultures valued in their schools and to know that their voices and experiences matter. To our Latino students and families: You belong here, and we are proud that you are part of San Diego Unified.”

Activity/Visuals: On 9/15, Ballet Folklorico performance & Mariachi will perform during lunch to open celebrations of Latinx Heritage Month. The school will be decorated, and the library will have a section for decoration as well. Students from SHPE (students in STEM club) will also provide a presentation of Hispanic leaders in STEM.

At the end, once the passport is filled out, they will be entered in a raffle to win a big prize.
