MEDIA ADVISORY: San Diego Unified + San Diego Press Club present: April ED Talks
San Diego journalists are invited to participate in the April installment of ED Talks, a casual forum hosted by the San Diego Unified School District in collaboration with the San Diego Press Club. The goal is to foster open and robust conversations about public education.
The April forum will feature San Diego Unified’s innovative food and nutrition programs, including the Love Food Not Waste collaboration with local food banks and Farm-to-School partnerships with organic farms to supply school cafeterias with fresh, locally grown produce. Bring your questions and your appetite and we’ll supply the snacks!
WHEN: Monday, April 29, 2019, noon
WHERE: Eugene Brucker Education Center Auditorium, 4100 Normal Street, San Diego, CA 92103.
Background: San Diego Unified is committed to helping to end food insecurity in our city, while also keeping leftover prepared food from school meals out of the landfill. Through our Love Food Not Waste program, this food is rescued and provided to local hunger relief organizations coordinated through our partnership with Feeding San Diego. These organizations are then able to extend a meal to those facing food insecurity in and around our school communities.
The Love Food Not Waste program has prevented more than 202,775 pounds of prepared food ending up in landfills, provided in excess of 169,120 meals to the hungry, reduced food costs, and eliminated more than 110,107 pounds of Co2 gas emissions.
Farm to School is a program that connects students and local farms with the objectives of serving healthy meals in school cafeterias; improving student nutrition; providing agriculture, health and nutrition education opportunities; and supporting local and regional farmers.
This event is for professional journalists. Please confirm attendance in advance by replying to this email or by calling 619-725-5578.
