SAN DIEGO UNIFIED ADDS 23 TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOMS FOR 2025-26 SCHOOL YEAR
Enrollment for Transitional Kindergarten Starts March 15, 2025
TK Class Sizes Reduced from 24 to 20 Students

SAN DIEGO (MARCH 13, 2025) – The San Diego Unified School District is increasing the number of available Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classrooms district wide by 10% and reducing class sizes from 24 to 20 for more individualized student attention. On March 15, families can begin enrolling their children in the San Diego Unified TK program for the 2025-2026 school year using this link.

“Our District went all-in on universal transitional kindergarten when the State expanded it three-years ago and we have received positive feedback from families about our TK program,” said Dr. Fabi Bagula, San Diego Unified School District Superintendent (Interim). “We are dedicated to making high quality, early childhood education accessible. TK prepares children for lifelong learning and academic success, and we encourage all district families to apply and give their children a strong start on their educational journey with San Diego Unified."

Since universal TK classes started to be offered at San Diego Unified in 2022, more than 15,000 students have benefited from this outstanding early education opportunity. The TK program expansion for 2025-2026 school year includes:

  • Expanding from 229 to 252 TK classrooms district-wide
  • Reducing class sizes from 24 to 20 students per classroom (two educators per class)
  • Strategic classroom additions in high-demand areas to better serve community needs

"This significant expansion of our TK program directly aligns with our district's core commitment to educational equity and excellence," said Marceline Sciuto, Executive Director of Operations Support. "By adding 23 new classrooms and providing a more favorable teacher-student ratio of 1:10 or lower, we're creating more personalized learning environments where every child can thrive. Our strategic placement of these additional classrooms in high-demand areas ensures that more families can access quality early education right within their own neighborhoods."

  • In-person assistance available at district offices throughout the application period

"Beginning in TK instead of Kindergarten gives students an additional year of preparation that will build a foundation for the next 14 years with San Diego Unified. TK offers families access to our values of extraordinary opportunities from TK through high school. It's more than just an early start—it's an introduction to a world of opportunities that will follow your child throughout their educational journey with us," added Sciuto.
