Tony winner Sara Ramirez donates to SCPA

San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) receives a gift of $20,000
from grateful alumna, Sara Ramirez, 2005 Tony Award-winning actress.

The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) is pleased to announce the magnanimous gift from Sara Ramirez, a SCPA 1993 graduate. Ms. Ramirez, the 2005 Tony Award-winner for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as The Lady of the Lake in Monty Python's SPAMALOT, attended the school from 4th – 12th grade.

She acknowledged that SCPA "played a HUGE role in where and who I am today so I would like to take this time to give a little something back." The "little something" is a most generous donation of $20,000, specifically earmarked for the drama, music and dance departments, and the piano fund. Sara Ramirez graduated from The Julliard School in New York City, where she refined her skills as actress. She can currently be seen on television in the hit show, GREY'S ANATOMY.

SCPA receives donations from individuals and corporations throughout the year. These can be in the form of equipment needs or money designated for a certain program. Those wishing to contribute can become a member of FRIENDS OF SCPA, with several different donation levels available. FRIENDS and more donation information can be viewed online at www.scpa@sandi.net, or call the school directly at 619/470-0555.

NEWS RELEASE -- State Budget Passage Helps Schools Move Forward

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, February 19,
2009

State Budget Passage Helps Schools Move Forward

Sacramento Decisions Continue to Impact San Diego Students

SAN DIEGO -- Final budget reductions approved by the state legislature
on Feb. 18 and expected to be signed by the Governor on Feb. 20 are in
line with earlier projections, meaning San Diego Unified will lose $33.2
million in expected funding for the current fiscal year, according to
the latest estimates from the San Diego Unified School District.

"We're thankful that the legislature has finally settled its
differences," said Shelia Jackson, president of the Board of Education.
"This matter has gone on too long and created a great deal of anxiety
for our parents and students, teachers and staff."

The cuts approved by the Board on February 10, 2009, will be sufficient
to cover the estimated $33.2 million reduction in state funding for the
remainder of the school year. These cuts included a hiring freeze,
delaying purchasing major items from the district's general fund, and
adjustments to the workers' compensation fund and reserves.

The Board is currently holding public workshops on the budget for the
next school year, which must be submitted to the state by July 1.
Current estimates are that an additional $63.1 million will be cut by
the state.

"Our goals are to keep these cuts as far away from the classroom as
possible," said Jackson. "We are looking at innovative ways to become
more efficient and protect our children's education. Our contribution to
the local stimulus package is to keep our San Diegans working.

"We want to make this district a lean, mean, education machine."

The public is invited to the next budget workshop, which is scheduled
from 2-5 p.m. this Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Eugene Brucker Education
Center, 4100 Normal Street.

Note to editors and reporters: Board President Shelia Jackson will be
available for interviews at 2 p.m. today at the Education Center, Room
2231, 4100 Normal Street. A summary of the current-year budget cuts
follows.

Summary of 2008-09 Fiscal Year Cuts

A total of $33.2 million cuts were required by the state of California
in San Diego Unified's current year budget. At a Feb. 10, 2009, special
meeting, the board approved the following adjustments.

-- Workers Compensation Fund: $4.5 million. Claims have decreased
over the last two years due to changes in the law and programs
implemented by the district. Fund remains fully funded with reduction.

-- Freeze Vacant Positions: $6.2 million. The 264 vacant positions
will not be filled.

-- Redevelopment Agency Fund Shift: $6.3 million. School custodians
in redevelopment areas will be charged to funds received from the
redevelopment agency.

-- Ending Reserve Spend-Down: $4 million. A one-time use of funds
left over from prior budget years.

-- Central Office Savings: $7.7 million. Purchases of big-ticket
items such as school buses will be delayed, travel expenses reduced and
savings on hourly employees.

-- Developer Fee Cost Adjustment: $150,000. By law, districts are
allowed to use 3 percent of developer fees for administrative expenses.

-- Expenditure Shift from General Fund Unrestricted to Categorical
Resources: $4.35 million. In anticipation of state budget issues, the
district analyzed what expenses were being funded through the general
fund that could be assigned to categorical funds -- those earmarked by
the state or federal government for specific uses.

SCPA AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' press release

AIN'T MISBEHAVIN', the 1978 Tony Award Winning Musical
comes to the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts March 12, 2009

The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) 2008-2009 performance season continues with the Fats Waller Tony Award winning musical, Ain't Misbehavin'. This musical production begins March 12, 2009, and continues March 13,14,19, and 20 at 7 p.m., and on March 21, 2009 at 2 p.m. Additionally, SCPA has been invited to stage this show at The California Center for the Arts, Escondido on May 19, 2009.

Ain't Misbehavin' is a lively musical revue with many songs and piano solos composed or recorded by the famous jazz giant of the 1930s, Fats Waller. One of the most prolific musicians of the time, he was a man who discovered music at a young age. In 1918, Fats won a talent contest playing James P. Johnson's "Carolina Shout". The intriguing part is that he learned the song by watching a pianola (player piano) play the song. Soon after that event, Johnson decided to tutor and teach him. Fats learned to play the piano and was able to create his own piano rolls to sell. Waller's popularity increased when he started to sing and play his compositions to an ever-broadening audience.

Not quite a biography, this comedic show with a rollicking musical score depicts the life of the 1930s Harlem streets. This upbeat musical contains many well-known jazz standards as well as some finger-snapping songs which may not be as familiar to a contemporary audience. Some of the songs are "Ain't Misbehavin' ", "Lookin' Good But Feelin' Bad", "Honeysuckle Rose", "Squeeze Me", "I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling", "The Ladies Who Sing with the Band", "Cash for Your Trash", "Mean to Me", "Your Feet's Too Big", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", and "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie".

The original New York production was written for a cast of five people. However, SCPA's cast will expand to 20. This is to highlight all of the talented student performers in the Advanced Musical Theatre class. And because of its strong reputation in San Diego County, SCPA will perform this show on May 19th at another theatrical venue, The California Center for the Arts, Escondido!

Ain't Misbehavin' will be staged at SCPA in the Ole Kittleson Little Theatre, with general seating in an intimate setting. Tickets are available online now at www.scpa.sandi.net or call the box office at (619) 475-8556. Printing tickets online is possible as well. Tickets are $7 for adults and $6 for students, seniors and military.

Next up in SCPA's 2008-2009 Performance Season is a double-bill of two hilarious comedies, Play On! and The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940. They will take the stage in the Florence Johnson Grand Theatre March 26 – April 4, 2009. Remember to order your tickets early as these family-friendly shows may sell out!
