News Release: Patrick Henry High School Broke Ground on New Performing Arts Center and Production Studios

NEWS RELEASE -- March 27, 2014
Contact: Cynthia Reed-Porter, 619-546-3378

Patrick Henry High School Broke Ground on New Performing Arts Center and Production Studios

San Diego Unified School District's Patrick Henry High School is beginning the construction of a long-awaited performing arts center, state-of-the-art facilities for its College, Career & Technology (CCTE) Production Studios Program, and campus-wide site modernization improvements. More than 120 students, parents, staff and community members celebrated the start of construction with a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday.

"I'm thrilled that we have reached this milestone," said Kevin Beiser, president of the school district's Board of Education. "This is an exciting time for Henry High School's students and teachers, as well as the Del Cerro and San Carlos communities."

"I've been a staunch supporter of this new performing arts center," he added. "The Propositions S and Z funds have wisely been allocated to construct an academically rich center that will support the district's A-G high school graduation requirements, including "F" for fine arts. The district is also maximizing the Propositions S and Z money by getting matching state Proposition 1D funds for the Production Studios Program facilities."

This nearly $37 million project includes:

Performing Arts Center and Production Studios Program Facilities
. 16,000 square feet, 500-seat facility for musical and theater events
. 8,100 square feet of CCTE Production Studios Program facilities to provide education in media and design arts, as well as production and managerial arts
. Workshop spaces for fabrication design, audio visual, lighting, model and mixed media
. Planned joint use with local, private theater and orchestra groups

Site Modernization:
. Upgrades to several buildings including the gym
. New campus-wide air conditioning
. Intercom system
. Electrical upgrades
. Security lighting
. A new fire alarm system
. Americans with Disabilities Act upgrades
. A new parking lot

Construction of the performing arts center/production studios is expected to be completed by fall 2015, followed by the site modernization in spring 2016.The project partners are T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc. and PJHM Architects.

Earlier this year, the American Institute of Architects awarded PJHM Architects a 2013 Members Choice Award for its innovative design of the new performing arts center and Production Studios Program facilities. The building design currently exceeds qualifications for the California High Performance School Initiative. LED lighting throughout the entire complex, and the use of local and recycled materials will make it both efficient and environmentally friendly. Design influences were drawn from the area, including the use of heavy timbers, open glass and the colors and textures of the surrounding area.

WHAT: Food packaging event at Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary School

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, March 28, Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary School,
11778 Cypress Canyon Rd. (92131). Kevin Beiser, Board of Education
President, will be available for comment on the students¹ effort at 10
a.m. at the school. Students will be packing material from 8:45 a.m. to
3:15 p.m.

QUOTE: ³This is a great partnership for kids,² said Kevin Beiser, Board of
Education President and representative for the Scripps Ranch neighborhood.
³Not only are they learning the values of giving and sharing, but needy
families will have a meal through Kids Against Hunger.²

DETAILS: Students at the school will be assembling 28,000 meal packs to go
to Kids Against Hunger, a project of our charity partner, Friends and
Family Community Connection.

The Food Packaging Event is the first of its kind in the San Diego Unified
School District.

Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary students have been practicing the
character trait of generosity for years. Generosity, compassion, honesty
and forgiveness are only a few of the many character traits that are
taught as part of the character education program at the school. The
character education program is a unique program that focuses on one
character trait each month. Each character trait is taught through
storytelling and activities led by parent volunteers.

In turn, students are expected to demonstrate these character traits on
campus and in their community In the past two years alone the students
have donated over $7,200 to Kids Against Hunger, a project of our charity
partner, Friends and Family Community Connection.

All students from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade will be working on the
project, including weighing, sealing, sorting, and boxing up bags of food.
The students will get a hands-on opportunity to work cooperatively while
demonstrating generosity and compassion.

They will be supervised by dozens of parent volunteers and their teachers
in an amazing show of our school community spirit. The food will benefit
San Diego families as well as orphans in Tanzania.

NEWS RELEASE -- SD Unified, SD Community College District Boards Hold Joint Meeting

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, March 17, 2014

SD UNIFIED, SD COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT BOARDS HOLD JOINT MEETING

SAN DIEGO ‹ Governing boards of the two largest education systems in San
Diego county will hold a special joint board meeting at 5 p.m. tomorrow,
Tuesday, March 18, as part of an ongoing effort at better coordinating
approaches to issues vital for both the San Diego Community College
District (SDCCD) and San Diego Unified School District.

This will be the third joint meeting of the two boards. The session is set
to start at 5 p.m. in the Performing Arts Theatre at San Diego Continuing
Education¹s Educational Cultural Complex, 4343 Ocean View Blvd., in San
Diego¹s Mountain View community.

The joint meeting builds upon joint sessions that took place in 2011 and
2013, representing an opportunity for the two organizations to evaluate
progress and make additional plans to ensure that students are
academically prepared for both higher education and the workforce. The
public and community leaders are invited to attend; this is an open public
meeting for both boards.

Previous meetings have included discussion on aligning academic calendars
between the two districts, coordinating curriculum, concurrent enrollment,
and expanding the early/middle college high school model in which high
school students are provided with extensive preparation for college and
can take several courses for college credit. Mesa College is home to the
San Diego Unified¹s successful MET School; San Diego City College hosts
the San Diego Early/Middle College High School.

Among the many items to be discussed at the March 18 meeting are a K-14
Accountability Framework for Student Success, aligning mathematics and
English curriculum with Common Core standards, establishing a connection
between specific K-12 areas of study and SDCCD college majors, early
childhood education legislation, and Assembly Bill 86, which provides
grants to community colleges and secondary school districts in developing
regional plans to better serve the educational needs of adults.

A link to the March 18 agenda is available at
http://www.boarddocs.com/ca/sdccd/Board.nsf/Public.

The San Diego Unified School District serves more than 130,000 students in
pre-school through grade 12 and is the second largest district in

District's new mass notification provider goes live April 1

Automated phone and email messages you receive from your school site and from the district will have a slightly different look to them starting next month. As of April 1, the district will be using SchoolMessenger to provide mass notification services. District employees and parents who receive communication will hear no difference in the phone messages (the prompt that said "This is an important message from...Please press 1 to hear the message" has been removed) and will only see minor formatting changes on outreach and attendance emails. There will be more options available to all parties regarding message access and preferences. Stay tuned for more details.

March 14

7:00-9:00 Scripps Ranch High School Culinary Classroom, 60 Food Service
managers. Naming, merchandising, sampling and food demo

DETAILS: Mark Ainsworth, Culinary Institute of America Professor and Chef,
and Adam Brumberg, Deputy Director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab, will
be demonstrating innovative ways to prepare, serve and market food
containing whole grains to students at Scripps Ranch High School and
Jerabek Elementary School.

Part of the Michelle Obama-inspired Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010
involved increasing the amount of whole grains in school meals. This is
sometimes a hard sell to kids who have grown up eating refined grain
products like hamburger buns, white bread and white rice.

It is not difficult to transition to whole grains, the challenge is
serving whole grains that children will eat and enjoy, a challenge being
taken on in schools across the nation. Chef Ainsworth and Adam Brumberg
will encourage innovative recipes and marketing. They will also promote
San Diego Unified¹s Kids Create Recipe Contest which will run during
March and ask student Grades K-12 to come up with delicious and healthy
recipes using either whole grain brown rice or whole grain tortillas.

The goal of these events is to provide education and hands-on experience
to students around whole grains, showing how easy it is to make them a
