**EMBARGOED MEDIA ALERT**

SAN DIEGO TEEN WILL SURPRISE HIGH SCHOOL CLASSMATES WITH HIS GENEROUS WISH

WHAT: The surprise presentation of a very special wish to 14-year-old Darren
Shanks, a freshman at Patrick Henry High School who is battling cancer.

When offered the opportunity to wish to go anywhere, meet anyone or have
anything, Darren made a wish to give... he wanted to surprise his high
school's football team with new uniforms.

This remarkable young man¹s wish will come true at an all-school assembly on
June 7th when representatives from Make-A-Wish Foundation will reveal to
Darren that the Freshman, Jr. Varsity and Varsity football teams at Patrick
Henry will all be getting new home and away jerseys and home pants, thanks
to a generous donation from Nike. Darren, who has been out of school for
several months in treatment, will be returning to campus for this special
event.

Darren's teammates have been loyal friends and supporters - in fact, when he
started to lose his hair because of chemotherapy treatments, the entire
football team shaved their heads. Even though Darren can't play this year
due to his illness, he wants to give back and do something really special
for them.

Darren played on the freshman football team at Patrick Henry High School
last year as an offensive lineman and was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's
Lymphoma in January 2010. He was referred to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of
San Diego, a non-profit organization that grants wishes to children with
life-threatening medical conditions.

WHO: Wish kid Darren and his family, the students and faculty of Patrick
Henry High School, Todd Melrose from Nike, and representatives from
Make-A-Wish. The San Diego Chargers will also be participating in the
presentation, more details will be shared as soon as they are available.

WHEN: Monday, June 7, 2010. 9:36 a.m. Students will start arriving at
amphitheatre; 9:45-10:00 a.m. Program

Media interested in covering this event must arrive by 9:30 a.m., check-
in at the front office, and will be escorted to the amphitheatre.

No interviews will be provided until after the program, please note that the
details of this event are a complete surprise to both wish child Darren and
the school and will be revealed during the program.

WHERE: Patrick Henry High School, 6702 Wandermere Drive, San Diego 92120,
Outdoor Amphitheatre

News Release -- Clairemont

Construction Begins on Clairemont High School's New Automotive Facility

SAN DIEGO-Construction has begun on the Auto Technology Building at Clairemont High School. It is expected to be complete by Spring 2011. The $2.6 million College, Career & Technical Education facility (CCTE) is funded by Proposition S and a California Proposition 1D grant. Project features include:
* A new 3,475-square-foot masonry building with six auto bays that are to be used by students as labs
* A 32-student-classroom that will be housed in an existing 3,420-square-foot auto shop area
* The buildings will provide an industry-standard facility that supports certification by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation.
* These professional facilities will help prepare students for work in the commercial automotive industry, enabling instruction and practice in such areas as engine performance, steering and suspension, electrical and mechanical components and brakes.

This is one of 19 construction projects awarded by San Diego Unified School District Board of Education since Proposition S was passed in November 2008. Those construction projects represent a more than $55 million investment into the students, teachers and communities within San Diego Unified School District.  During the first year of implementing the previous school bond measure, Prop. MM, the district only awarded $7 million in construction contracts.

The CCTE projects are funded by Prop. S (local) and Prop. 1D (state) bond programs. Construction Tech Academy at Kearny High School and the "Buc Café" (student store) for the Mission Bay High Entrepreneurship Program are complete. Garfield HS Culinary Arts Program is nearly complete. Besides Clairemont HS Auto Technology Program facility, other CCTE facilities that are currently under construction include: Madison HS Automotive Technology, Morse HS Auto Body Program, San Diego HS Multimedia Arts Program, San Diego HS Finance and Business, San Diego HS Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation; Morse Culinary Arts Program, and Madison HS Multimedia Production Program.

For more information on these and other CCTE programs and facilities, please call Shawn Loescher, CCTE director, (858) 503-1754. You may also visit the CCTE website at http://www.sdccte.org. For Prop. S information, contact Cynthia Reed-Porter, communications supervisor, at creed-porter@sandi.net or (619) 725-5579. You may also visit www.sandi.net\Prop. S.

MEDIA ADVISORY -- Career-Tech Students Meet Employers at Showcase

MEDIA ADVISORY from the San Diego Unified School District, May 19, 2010

CAREER-TECH STUDENTS MEET EMPLOYERS AT SHOWCASE

WHAT: College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE) Showcase

WHEN: 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, May 20

WHERE: McMillin Event Center, 2875 Dewey Road in the Liberty Station
complex. The event is open to the public.

BACKGROUND

In fields ranging from automotive repair to biotechnology, today's
vocational-education classes are training researchers, support staff and
blue-collar workers for tomorrow's workplace.

The popular College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE) Showcase is an
annual event that brings together students and programs from the vocational
education classrooms around the district.

From culinary arts students strolling with dessert trays, to robots, to
medical technicians, it's a place where prospective employers and community
partners can see first-hand how students are learning real-world skills for
today's jobs.

Corporate partners will also be on hand to talk about how they're involved
with programs at schools throughout the San Diego Unified School District,
and why vocational education is important in training tomorrow's workforce.

Today's college, career and technical education programs train all students,
ranging from those who will enter the job market right after high school, to
students who will complete a PhD. in their chosen field. For example,
programs at the Stanley E. Foster Construction Tech Academy at Kearny High
School can graduate with the skills to work in a construction-industry job,
as well as go on to an advanced degree in a field such as architecture or
engineering. The career-technical class gives both important hands-on
training from San Diego's experts in their field.

INTERVIEWS/PHOTOS: Students demonstrating everything from robots, to
collecting basic medical information, to preparing and serving gourmet hors
d'oeuvres. Interim Superintendent Bill Kowba will be available for
interviews, as will students, teaachers and local business partners. Members
of the Board of Education may also be in attendance and available for
interviews.
