25 -- House of Giving Thanksgiving Day Event, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., House of
Blues, 1055 5th Ave. (92101). A free Thanksgiving Dinner on Thanksgiving Day
at the House of Blues for families from five of our district's schools.
Admission is by ticket only and families can get free tickets through their
schools. Flyers will be given to students in the schools giving details on
how to obtain tickets. Feeding America is supplying the food and the House

SCPA teacher of the year, Bill Doyle, as Scrooge, 92 students are working on
this production including 50 actors, 26 musicians, and 16 crew members. Mark

* 11 -- SCPA Fall Visual Arts Exhibition Reception, prior to the 2 and 7
p.m. performances of Scrooge, San Diego School of Creative and Performing
Arts Grand Theater, 2425 Dusk Dr. (92139). The exhibition is open one hour
earlier than the Scrooge showtimes and during intermission. The Friends of
SCPA, the school's foundation, will host a special holiday treat complete
with cookies, hot cocoa, and carolers. Exhibition runs Dec. 9-17. Tickets

offer and the admission process. Event features exhibit of current student
art in the Little Theater. The first 25 attendants win free tickets to that

19-26 -- San Diego Science Festival, on SDUSD campuses and in various
locations around San Diego. More than 75,000 students, parents, scientists,
educators, and other community members are anticipated to take part in this
year's activities, with over 30,000 expected on Expo Day, a

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, Nov. 17, 2010

SAN DIEGO UNIFIED SCHOOLS, OFFICES CLOSED NOV. 22-26

All San Diego Unified School District schools and offices will be closed
Nov. 22-26 for Thanksgiving break.

Workers will be in some offices; however, they are not open to the public.
Many non-school staff members are taking furlough days, which has lead to
the office closures because full services are not available.

All schools and facilities will reopen on Monday, Nov. 29.

To report emergencies at any school or San Diego Unified facility, call
School Police at (619) 291-7678.

5-6 -- Association of California School Administrators Leadership Conference, Manchester Grand Hyatt, One Market Place (92101). Conference by statewide educational organization. Supt. Kowba will be welcoming attendees at first session and San Diego Unified staff is participating. Contact:

5-7 -- Old Globe Theater Southeastern San Diego Residency Project at Lincoln
High School, 4777 Imperial Ave. (92113). San Diego theater in its second annual visit to the Performing Arts Center for performances (open to the public) and Globe actors working with students at Lincoln and SCPA.

6 -- Morse High Rising Above Pressure Parent-Student Conference, 9 a.m. to
2 p.m., Morse High School, 6905 Skyline Drive (92114). Learn how to rise above pressure with interactive workshops on topics including Internet safety, applying for college, fitness, culinary arts, high school test prep and careers. 6 -- San Diego Fiesta Educativa, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Southwestern College, 900
Otay Lakes Road, Chula Vista (91910). Fiesta Educativa was founded in
California in 1978 to inform and assist Latino families in obtaining services and in caring for their children with special needs. A limited number of scholarships are available; for more information contact Pat Moulton at (619) 725-7327 or pmoulton@sandi.net.

6 -- AP "Super Saturday," 8 a.m., Clairemont High School, 4150 Ute Dr.
(92117). San Diego Unified's Advanced Placement Incentive Program presents a
day of teaching, leading and succeeding in the 21st century for teachers and

public.

6 -- Curie Elementary Holiday Craft Fair, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Curie Elementary
School, 4080 Governor Drive (92122). Sponsored by the PTA at Curie, this
longtime community staple draws more than 100 booths with sellers offering
hundreds of handmade arts and crafts items, food booths, bake sale and silent auction. The Kid's Corner will feature carnival games and entertainment. Contact: Curie PTA, (858) 643-9720 or www.curiepta.org. Open to the public.

9 -- Board of Education Meeting, 5 p.m., Eugene Brucker Education Center, 4100 Normal St. (92103). Agenda and information:

* 10 - Zamorano School Arts and Crafts Around the World Faire. From 4-6 p.m.
Zamorano School 2655 Casey St. (92139). It's a trip around the world through
the arts. School will showcase variety of arts and crafts and participants get to explore 16 different projects. Kids get "passports" to document their travels around the globe. For information, contact Cynthia Pothier, cperez4@sandi.net. Not open to the public.

10 -- Serra High School Modernization Project Site Master Planning Design Task Force, 6 p.m., Serra High School, 5156 Santo Rd. (92124). Prop.

11 -- Veterans Day holiday, all schools and offices closed.

13 -- Pt. Loma High 85th Anniversary Gala, 6 p.m., Liberty Station Conference Center, 2600 Laning Road (92106). Point Loma High School will celebrate 85 years of educational excellence with a weekend of events including the "Once a Pointer, Always a Pointer" gala and auction. Contact:

13 -Galadash. Benefitting Point Loma High School. 2335 Chatsworth Blvd.
(92106), starting 8 a.m. It's free, fun, and 85. That's a free fun 5-K Run/Walk through the streets of Point Loma to celebrate the 85th anniversary of Point Loma High. Strollers and dogs welcome. Start and finish at the school stadium. Commemorative event T-shirts available with $10 donation to the PLHS Men's/Women's Cross Country Teams. * 13 - Family Fun Day and Rummage Sale, supporting the Madison High School
Community of Schools. From 10 am to 3 pm at Madison, 4833 Doliva Drive
(92117). Bag some fun and help support 10 schools in the Madison community!
Event will showcase talent from local schools and raise money for scholarships, school clubs and academic needs. No Early Admission. Featuring great shopping, good food, entertainment from local schools and booths from local businesses that support the schools. Sponsored by PTSA at seven elementary schools: Field, Hawthorne, Holmes, Lafayette, Lindbergh/Schweitzer, Sequoia and Whitman. Also sponsored by two middle schools: Creative Performing Media Arts (CPMA) and Innovation Middle as well as Madison High. Program geared for the brothers and sisters of students with special needs and to help the family be better connected with the school experience. * 13 -- 21st Century Education Symposium, 8:30 am - 4 pm, Handlery Hotel &
Resort, Presidio Ballroom:, 950 Hotel Circle North (92108). Geared to teachers, administrators, service providers and parents. Featuring parenting experts leading discussions on improving educational outcomes for students, with focus on disabled student education. Fees $40/DSA members/$50 public and $70/90 per couple. * 17 - Thurgood Marshall Middle School partners with non-profit anti-bullying program Teen Truth Live. The full day assembly will focus on discussion of bullying, positive body image, drugs and alcohol abuse. From 7:40am-1:00pm, sponsored by PTSA. * 11 - Open House and School of Creative and Performing Arts Information
Session. All day starting at 8:45 a.m. SCPA, 2425 Dusk Drive. (92139). Featuring student art, theatrical and band performances. Event for interested students and families presenting information about what SCPA magnet school has to offer and the application process to get in. Event features exhibit of current student art in the Little Theater. The First 25 attendants win free tickets to that day's 2 p.m. showing of student presentation, "Scrooge, The Musical." Next 25 attendants win

* 14 - Ladies of Science in the City. Serra High will host UCSD Chancellor UCSD Marye Anne Fox and 30 members of the Ladies of Science program for a
luncheon followed by a special session in the school's science classes with a pickle experiment conducted by UCSD chemistry professor James Whitesell,
who is also the chancellor's husband. For information, contact Serra science

March

19-26 -- San Diego Science Festival, on SDUSD campuses and in various
locations around San Diego. More than 75,000 students, parents, scientists,
educators, and other community members are anticipated to take part in this
year's activities, with over 30,000 expected on Expo Day, a free-to-the-
community event. Contact: Mary Jo Ball, San Diego Science Festival, Managing

Tuesday: Powwow Workshop Soaring Eagles, 6 p.m. Ballard Parent Center,
