Scott Barnett News Release - May 26, 2011

NEWS from Scott Barnett:

Thursday, May 26, 2011

Barnett calls for Employees to Forgo Raises to Save Jobs

Hundreds laid off in face of planned raises of more than $88 million over next three years

San Diego, CA …With schools facing the worse financial crisis since the great depression, SDUSD Board Trustee Scott Barnett has called on 15,000 teachers and other employees to forgo raises in order to restore teachers next year and avoid future layoffs.

"The issue is not whether our teachers and other employees deserve raises, I believe they do,” said Barnett, School Board Trustee.  "But the plain fact is we can't afford raises."

SDUSD paid $17 million in raises this school year. $12.5 million will be paid next year, and $76 million during the following two years in step and column and negotiated salary increases.

The bulk of the raises will go to classroom teachers according to Barnett.

"Every dollar we spend on raises is a dollar we don't have retain teachers, nurses, counselors and our vital support staff." said Barnett.

"Our school board unanimously asked our employee unions to work in partnership with us to find ways to save jobs.  But sadly, every union except our school police refused to even discuss options.  I don't understand how the leaders who represent our employees can justify not even talking about ways to save jobs. Everything must be on the table," said Barnett.

"My daughters have teachers who are facing layoffs next year,” said Barnett.  ”No school is immune from these terrible cuts.  But we can save jobs if we forgo raises," said Barnett, who was elected last November.

Even in the unlikely event that proposed tax extensions are approved by the legislature, San Diego Unified schools district is facing deficits of $ 23 million next year and $100 million by 2013.

MEDIA ADVISORY -- Career-Tech Students Meet Employers at Showcase

MEDIA ADVISORY from the San Diego Unified School District, May 25, 2011

CAREER-TECH STUDENTS MEET EMPLOYERS AT SHOWCASE

WHAT: College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE) Showcase

WHEN: 4:00-6 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2011

WHERE: Market Creek Events and Venues at the Joe and Vi Jacobs Center, 404
Euclid Ave., 92114. The event is open to the public.

BACKGROUND

In fields ranging from agriculture to solar energy to biotechnology, today's
career technical education classes are integrating core academic subjects
with relevant and challenging technical and occupational knowledge for
tomorrow's workplace.

The popular College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE) Showcase is an
annual celebratory event that brings together students, teachers, parents
and industry partners. It highlights the continued collective dedication to
the academic excellence achieved through career focused integrated academics
around the district.

From culinary arts students strolling with dessert trays, to computer
programs to help choose a college to attend, to medical technicians, it's a
place where prospective employers and community partners can see first-hand
how students are learning real-world skills for today's jobs. Corporate
partners will also be on hand to talk about how they're involved
with programs at schools throughout the San Diego Unified School District,
and why career technical education is important in training tomorrow's
workforce.

Today's college, career and technical education programs prepare students
for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. To ensure a
successful transition from the critical years of childhood to young
adulthood, the courses equip students with the skills they need to become
responsible citizens, contributing members of society and gainfully
employed. Many students will have the skills to enter the workforce
immediately after graduation while others can transition to post-secondary
opportunities to gain more skills. The career technical education courses
give important hands-on training from San Diego's experts in their field.

INTERVIEWS/PHOTOS: Students demonstrating everything from robots, to
collecting basic medical information, to preparing and serving gourmet hors
d'oeuvres. College Career and Technical Education Director Shawn Loescher
and other district officials will be available for interviews, as will
students, teachers and local business partners.

NEWS RELEASE -- 13 SCHOOLS ON WASHINGTON POST "BEST" LIST

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, May 25, 2011

13 SCHOOLS ON WASHINGTON POST "BEST" LIST

SAN DIEGO There are more than 18,000 high schools in the United States,
and according to the Washington Post, 14 of the top 2,000 are part of the
San Diego Unified School District, up two from 2010.

The annual list, formerly published by Newsweek Magazine, once again finds
Preuss UCSD charter high school with top honors, placing 24th on the list,
while the School of International Studies at San Diego High School placed
89; in San Diego County, only San Diego Unified has schools in the Post's
top 100. Schools joining the list this year are SCPA and Clairemont.

The schools are honored for doing the best job of preparing average students
for college by offering rigorous curriculum. Scores are determined by
dividing the number of Advanced Placement (AP) and International
Baccalaureate (IB) tests taken at a school by the number of graduating
seniors.

The 2011 list (as of May 24):

€ 16, Preuss UCSD

€ 89, San Diego High School of International Studies

€ 216, La Jolla

€ 266, Pt. Loma

€ 277, University City

€ 519, Serra

€ 545, Mira Mesa

€ 630, Patrick Henry

€ 630, Scripps Ranch

€ 712, San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts

€ 1098, Crawford CHAMPS

€ 1337, Clairemont

€ 1534, Lincoln

€ 1596, San Diego High School of Science and Technology

Superintendent Bill Kowba lauded the achievement of the schools, noting that
the effort is not only by the teacher and staff, but the students.

"This is one of many measures that show the excellence of schools in the San
Diego Unified School District," he said. "Every student, teacher and staff
member at these schools deserves a hearty congratulations."

The list is online at http://apps.washingtonpost.com/highschoolchallenge/
