Free cash for college financial aid workshops

Elected officials, school district urge student participation at college
aid workshops

High school seniors, local elected officials and San Diego Unified School
District representatives will announce on Friday a concerted effort to
increase the number of San Diego-area high school students applying for
free college financial aid. They will also request assistance in
publicizing and encouraging students to attend one of 13 upcoming
financial aid workshops. In 2013, San Diego region workshop participants
were offered more than $3 million in federal and Cal Grant aid.

College financial aid increases opportunities for students to attend a
college or university of their choice. The Public Policy Institute of
California estimates that the state will need an additional one million
Californians with four-year degrees or higher by 2025 because 41 percent
of the state¹s jobs will require a bachelor¹s degree or higher. Currently,
only 35 percent of adults will be prepared to meet this demand. Increasing
college access and affordability is essential.

Another 2.3 million Californians will be needed with post-graduate degree
certificates and two-year degrees in addition to the 3.2 million the state
is projected to produce by 2025 according to California Competes.

WHO: Senator Marty Block, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, U.S.
Representative Scott Peters, San Diego Unified Board Trustee Richard
Barrera, Linda Doughty of the California Student Opportunity and Access
Program and San Diego Unified high school students

WHAT: Appeal to graduating senior high school students and
parents to encourage attendance at one of 12 upcoming Cash for College
events: Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) & California
Dream Act Application Workshops (Jan. 25 March 1) in San Diego County.
Seniors who attend a workshop and apply for a Cal Grant by the March 2
deadline could qualify for an extra $1,000 Cash for College scholarship
offered at each workshop. Students will also be completing financial aid
forms at the news conference. Flyer with workshop schedule and list of
information students need to bring with them is attached to email in PDF
format. Workshop information is also available at
www.calgrants.org/workshops.

WHEN: Friday, Jan. 24 at 10 a.m.

WHERE: San Diego High School Library; 1405 Park Blvd., San Diego

NEWS RELEASE -- Board of Education Discusses School Success and Opportunity Act

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, January 14, 2014

BOARD OF EDUCATION DISCUSSES SCHOOL SUCCESS AND OPPORTUNITY ACT

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Unified School District's Board of Education will
discuss changes to policy as a result of the new School Success and
Opportunity Act (AB 1266) at today's 5 p.m. meeting.

The changes to district policies and procedures are considered minor but
will ensure that all rights of children in San Diego Unified schools are
respected and protected, in compliance with the Act.

"AB 1266 aligns with the district's Vision 2020 to create quality schools
in every neighborhood," said Superintendent Cindy Marten. "We believe that
quality schools provide a supportive environment that values diversity in
the service of all students."

Since September, a multi-disciplinary team has been working on the formal
implementation of the new law.

The proposed policy changes are scheduled to be reviewed at tonight's
Board meeting.

"We respect all rights and provide accommodations for all our students,"
said Board of Education President Kevin Beiser. "For many years, educators
have been handling this in a delicate, thoughtful and compassionate
manner; that will continue."

The new law, which took effect January 1, reflects practices that have
been in place at San Diego Unified School District schools for many years.
San Diego has based its procedures on those used in the Los Angeles
Unified School District for more than a decade.

The Board of Education is scheduled to discuss the changes at its meeting
that begins at 5 p.m. at the Education Center Auditorium, 4100 Normal St.
The public is invited to attend. The meeting will be streamed online at
sandi.net/board and shown live on iTV cable channel 16 within the
district's boundaries.

NEWS RELEASE -- San Diego Unified¹s Practices In Line With New California Pupil Rights Law

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, Jan. 6, 2013

SAN DIEGO UNIFIED'S PRACTICES IN LINE WITH NEW CALIFORNIA PUPIL RIGHTS ACT

SAN DIEGO -- California¹s new School Success and Opportunity Act (AB 1266)
law reflects practices that have been in place at San Diego Unified School
District schools for many years. Since September, a multi-disciplinary
team has been working on the formal implementation of the new law,
revising current policies for Board of Education consideration in coming
weeks.

The practices that have been in place ensure that the rights of all
children in San Diego Unified schools are respected and protected. The
process involves not only the student, but parents, counselors and staff.

³For many years, educators have been handling this in a delicate,
thoughtful and compassionate manner; that will continue,² said Board of
Education President Kevin Beiser. ³We respect all rights and provide
accommodations for all our students, including transgender children.²

Parents with concerns or questions about the practices and policies can
speak with their child¹s school principal.

³We want to assure parents, students and our community that because this
new law is in effect, it doesn¹t mean that a student can use any restroom
or other on-campus, gender-specific facility that they choose,² said
Beiser. ³There will continue to be a process for working with children and
their families to determine what is the appropriate course of action for
that child.²

The Board of Education is scheduled to review the policy revisions at its
January 14 meeting.
