MEDIA ADVISORY -- See Student Test Stars In Action

MEDIA ADVISORY from the San Diego Unified School District, April 23, 2010

SERIOUS FUN -- HIGH SCHOOL PEP RALLY HIGHLIGHTS SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM BOOSTING
TEST SCORES, STAR WARS STYLE

WHAT: A Tierrasanta high school takes STAR Wars approach to prepping for
standardized tests, engaging students and getting results. By de-mystifying
the test and what it's for and devoting resources to helping students
prepare, school officials get great buy-in from students.

WHEN: 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 28

WHERE: Serra High School gym, 5156 Santo Road (92124). School: (619)
496-8342. Parking on west side of campus.

WHAT: This is testing time in schools all over San Diego. These tests can
determine whether or not a school is labeled "failing" by the federal
government. Serra takes an innovative -- and fun -- approach to the annual
rite of spring that is standardized testing. Capping off weeks of academic
preparation, Serra throws a big football-style pep rally complete with
cheerleaders. There will be skits, raps, and other tension-releasing fun.
Possibly even a STAR Wars light-saber duel.

Serra students sometimes face challenges reaching the benchmark achievement
levels. It is a Title 1 school that educates many students whose parents are
active duty military and in war zones. Therefore the increase in student
achievement as well as a winning approach to academics are both worth the
spotlight.

WHY: A great vehicle to show the inside of how one school makes
accountability work for its students.

There are some 5 million California public school students right now taking
or about to undertake these federally-mandated and state-mandated
standardized tests. Serra does more than just give its students sharpened
No. 2 pencils. It spends weeks gearing up for the testing, tutoring and
counseling students. The event brings the whole school together to focus on
boosting standards.

And it works. In 2008, Serra's STAR Wars comprehensive approach increased
API score by 66 points. This was the largest growth of any comprehensive
high school in the history of San Diego Unified School District.

The pep rally caps the preparation for the test. Come join in the serious
fun.

Media Advisory--Mission Bay High celebrates grand opening of "Buc Cafe" TOMORROW

MEDIA ADVISORY
April 20, 2010

Mission Bay High celebrates grand opening of its "Buc Café"

What: Ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house for "Buc Café" (student-run store)

When: Tomorrow (Wednesday, April 21), 11-11:30 a.m. (rain or shine)

Where: Mission Bay High School, 2475 Grand Avenue, Pacific Beach (92109)
Directions: Int. 5 north to Grand Ave., exit west. or Int. 5 south, exit
Garnet/Balboa Ave., straight ahead to Grand Ave., turn right.
If it rains, the ceremony will be held in the school library. Then
participants will walk approximately 50 feet to the "Buc Café." (see map)

Parents and community members will join San Diego Unified School District staff tomorrow in celebrating the official dedication of the new "Buc Café" at Mission Bay High School. After a short 15-minute ceremony, guests will be invited into the new student store for an "inside look" at how the store operates.

The "'Buc Café' for the Academy of Entrepreneurship," also known as the Mission Bay Magnet for Global Studies and Technology, provides high school students with the skills to successfully transition from school to career. Students who attend this academy are well-prepared to take advantage of internship opportunities within the large number of small businesses in the community. To increase its real-world focus, students in the Academy complete Virtual Enterprises, a course preparing them to function within the global economy and be responsible for the day-to-day operations of an on-site cafe.

The "Buc Café" is one of 15 College, Career & Technical Education facilities being constructed under the Proposition S (local) and Proposition 1D (state) bond programs. The 750-square-foot café represents a nearly $400,000 investment into Mission High School and the community.

On November 4, 2008, nearly 69 percent of the voters in San Diego passed the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure, Proposition S, so that San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) could repair, renovate and revitalize 181 schools.

Visuals: Speakers, ribbon-cutting ceremony, and inside look at the student store operations, students will be preparing for the lunch period

Interviews: Students, school principal, teacher of student café program, Board of Education member representing the Mission Bay schools/communities, executive director of the Capital Improvement Bond Program (Proposition S), program manager of College, Career & Technical Education.

NEWS RELEASE: 15 SAN DIEGO UNIFIED SCHOOLS ARE 'DISTINGUISHED'

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, April 19, 2010

15 SAN DIEGO UNIFIED SCHOOLS ARE ŒDISTINGUISHED¹

Record Number of Elementary Campuses Are on This Year¹s State Department of
Education List

SAN DIEGO &lsqauo; Elementary schools from Pacific Beach to Scripps Ranch, from La
Jolla to South Bay Terraces &lsqauo; throughout the San Diego Unified School
District, were honored today by receiving 2010 California Distinguished
School awards from the state Department of Education.

The schools on this year's list from San Diego Unified are: Barnard Mandarin
Chinese Magnet, Bay Park, Bird Rock, Birney, Cadman, Chesterton, EB Scripps,
Erickson, Foster, Jones, Loma Portal, Nye, Perry, Sequoia and Vista Grande.

"Our hard-working students, teachers and educational teams deserve all the
credit for this recognition of their excellence in academics," said Bill
Kowba, Interim Superintendent. "This is the largest number of our schools to
be honored. That speaks highly of all the students, educators, staff and
families in San Diego Unified."

The 15 elementary schools are the most in one year for San Diego Unified
since the program began in the mid-1980s. Elementary and secondary schools
are awarded in alternate years; in 2009, six middle and high schools were
awarded.

Schools were evaluated based on their test scores from the state Academic
Performance Index and federal No Child Left Behind Adequate Yearly Progress,
as well as efforts to narrow the achievement gap among ethnic groups. Each
school had to describe two signature practices that lead to a narrowing of
the achievement gap and an increase in student achievement.

An awards banquet at Anaheim's Disneyland Hotel will be held June 4 for the
2010 California Distinguished Schools. More information is online at
http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/sr/cs/.
