San Diego Unified Students Launch "If You See Something, Say Something" Public Service Announcement Video Campaign
The student produced PSAs will air on Cox Communications beginning in the month of June

WHAT: A group of San Diego Unified students, in partnership with San Diego Unified School Police and Crime Stoppers San Diego, will launch a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) aimed at increasing school safety awareness and promoting ways to report suspicious activity on and around our campuses.

The PSA titled, "If You See Something, Say Something," produced by students from San Diego High School and Point Loma High School, was created as a call to action in response to the tragic school shootings that have taken place in the recent months.

"Given the recent school shootings, both in Florida and Texas, we want to remind students and our community that their voice matters. We want to provide ways to report crime, in person or anonymously. Providing support for our school communities and creating safe learning environments is our top priority as a school police department. We are proud to partner with our students on this campaign and know this will add another layer of safety and security to our campuses." Said School Police Chief Mike Marquez.

The campaign will target the entire San Diego County community with two 30-second PSAs produced in English and Spanish on television and online. Cox Communications has partnered with the students and San Diego Unified and will aireach PSA 200 times throughout June.

Members of the media are invited to attend a special screening of the new PSAs followed by a question and answer session with the student producers.

The event recognizes seniors ranked in the top one percent of their high school's Class of 2018. More than 80 students will be honored, including all high school valedictorians. Principals, counselors, parents and other family members will be in attendance along with Board of Education trustees and Superintendent Cindy Marten. Ed Abeyta, UCSD Associate Dean and Director of Pre-College Programs, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Marilyn Hannes, Park President of San Diego SeaWorld and Aquatica, will welcome the attendees. Diego Robles from Kearny High School is the student speaker. Musical entertainment is being provided by the Preservationists from Mission Bay High School. This annual event brings together students from all San Diego Unified high schools, where they are announced by their principal, and receive a certificate and medal for their achievements. Some of the schools that students will be attending in the fall include Stanford, Cornell, Yale, Harvard, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego and UCLA.

Join Walker Elementary as they celebrate their diverse school community with a culture fair. Students will be given "passports" to freely visit tables throughout the center of campus. Select classes will present a visual/ performing art, rooted in the specific culture that they studied. This is a whole family event. This event celebrates the cultural roots represented in our community of learners. We will have the chance to learn about one another through story, food and customs. In the end, we will increase our cultural competence and connect!

Friday 6/1 – 10:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. –More than 200 Kinder – 2nd Grade Special Needs Students Take Part in 2nd Annual Young Athletes Festival
The San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) is holding its second annual Young Athletes Exhibition on Friday, June 1 in partnership with Special Olympics San Diego (SOSD). More than 200 students from preschool through second grade will participate in the event taking place at Clairemont High School. The Young Athletes Festival is sponsored by the district's adapted physical education department and the Southern California Special Olympics. Join 7 district elementary school K-2 grade students with special needs along with their general education peers as they spend the morning doing a variety of sports activities. The Clairemont physical education classes, ASB and cheerleaders are there to support the students and cheer them on. Young Athletes introduces students 2 to 7 years of age to sports skills and play activities that foster physical, cognitive and social development of young children with and without intellectual disabilities. All students participated in the program with their general education peers in classes co-taught by General PE and Adapted PE teachers. In all schools, they learned together and are now coming to celebrate together. This program provides opportunities to learn through sports play, developing all aspects of total fitness needed to compete in sport and promote the development of life-long skills that will help student athletes lead a more productive and independent life. Opening Ceremonies begin at 10:00 a.m. The exhibition will start at 10:30 a.m. An award ceremony will be held at the end of the day to honor the athletes. Each athlete who participates will receive an award.

Sequoia Elementary celebrates their first year of officially becoming a Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) focused school this year with a VAPA night celebration! The community will witness K and 1st graders perform a theatrical play, 2nd graders will perform a dance and 3rd,4th and 5th graders will perform in a music concert with violins. Additionally, parents and neighbors will have the chance to visit the Art Gallery where student art pieces will be on display.

Tuesday 5/29 – 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Kearny High School - Saving Coral Reefs One Video at a Time
Through an innovative partnership, the School of Digital Media & Design (DMD) at Kearny High School and Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego aim to find out. Tenth graders from Kearny High School were paired up with scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography to investigate the global impacts of environmental change on coral reefs. The students produced video campaigns that are intended to inspire the public to protect coral reefs and to galvanize the next generation of ocean stewards. The student-made videos will be screened during the Sea & Me event at Birch Aquarium on May 29. The Sea & Me screening is open to the public and takes place at Birch Aquarium on Tuesday, May 29 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided by the Kearny High School Culinary Arts Program. San Diego Unified and San Diego Community College District Host First Ever "BE YOUR STORY" African American Post-Graduation Success Summit 2018



WHAT: The San Diego Unified School District and the San Diego Community College District in partnership with UCSD Create and the San Diego Workforce Partnership will host the first ever African American Post-Graduation Success Summit honoring a collaborative commitment to educational equity and college access. The purpose of this Summit is to encourage students' connection to community groups supporting their post-secondary ambitions, emphasize the power of a strong cultural identity, and reinforce the importance of crafting a personal narrative.



Students will leave the event with concrete connections to the resources available for navigating workforce preparation and post-secondary planning in addition to learning about stress management, wellness services, student communities, and college life through the lens of near-peer mentors. Students will participate in innovative workshops that focus on navigating post-secondary life, financial literacy, and career possibilities.



More than 650 students have been invited to team up with near-peer mentors and participants from the collegiate and professional communities, giving them an opportunity to learn from their experiences and knowledge about their success after high school graduation. The Summit will feature keynote speaker Nate Howard, one of NBC News' 28 black leaders in the nation under 28, and San Diego Young Entrepreneur of the Year. He is also the founder of Movement BE, an organization aimed at inspiring young black students to "tell their story before someone else tells it for them."

BACKGROUND: The event recognizes seniors ranked in the top one percent of their high school's Class of 2018. More than 80 students will be honored, including all high school valedictorians. Principals, counselors, parents and other family members will be in attendance along with Board of Education trustees and Superintendent Cindy Marten.

 

Ed Abeyta, UCSD Associate Dean and Director of Pre-College Programs, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Marilyn Hannes, Park President of San Diego SeaWorld and Aquatica, will welcome the attendees. Diego Robles from Kearny High School is the student speaker. Musical entertainment is being provided by the Preservationists from Mission Bay High School.

 

This annual event brings together students from all San Diego Unified high schools, where they are announced by their principal, and receive a certificate and medal for their achievements. Some of the schools that students will be attending in the fall include Stanford, Cornell, Yale, Harvard, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego and UCLA.

Saving Coral Reefs One Video at a Time

Students from Kearny High School have teamed up with Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography to create videos that promote conservation locally and globally.

 

La Jolla, Calif. (May 24, 2018)—Can videos created by students help save coral reefs? Through an innovative partnership, the School of Digital Media & Design (DMD) at Kearny High School and Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego aim to find out.

 

Tenth graders from Kearny High School were paired up with scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography to investigate the global impacts of environmental change on coral reefs. The students produced video campaigns that are intended to inspire the public to protect coral reefs and to galvanize the next generation of ocean stewards. The student-made videos will be screened during the Sea & Me event at Birch Aquarium on May 29.

 

“The main priority of this project is to empathize with those who are unfamiliar with marine ecosystems, with an aim to engage underserved communities in the greater San Diego area,” said Heidi Schlageter, Kearny DMD digital arts teacher.

 

Inspired by the idea that local efforts can have a global impact, the students worked with Birch Aquarium’s husbandry staff and Scripps’ coral researchers to learn the role aquariums and public outreach play in understanding and communicating coral biology.

 

More than 70 students participated in teams of 3-4 for the year-long interdisciplinary project connecting English, history, science, and media classes. They created short videos from their experiences, drawing inspiration from pop-culture and Scripps Oceanography science. Some of the videos take a serious tone while others lean heavily on humor or are more tongue-in-cheek; and one is inspired by popular YouTube makeup tutorials.

 

“Until we are able to make environmental impacts around the world relevant locally, we will suffer from isolationism and nobody will be able to act globally to protect our planet,” said Harry Helling, executive director of Birch Aquarium. “We are inspired by these young ocean advocates.”

 

The Sea & Me screening is open to the public and takes place at Birch Aquarium on Tuesday, May 29 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided by the Kearny High School Culinary Arts Program. RSVP is recommended. For more information, visit aquarium.ucsd.edu.

Students from Morse High School Automotive Program Help Develop Paint Design for New 2018 Ford Mustang, F150 Truck; Vehicles on Display Friday at Morse                    

 

WHAT: The new 2018 Ford Mustang and F-150 Truck will be on display at Morse High School, featuring a paint design that students from Morse High's automotive program helped create.

 

WHEN: Friday, May 25, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

 

WHERE: Morse High School Auto Shop Lot, 6905 Skyline Dr. (92114). Please check in at the office first and contact Greg Quirin.

 

DETAILS: In fall 2017, students in Morse High School's automotive program were invited to work behind the scenes with Air Design USA, Sherwin Williams Automotive Paint, and Ford Motor Company. This was a top-secret job shadow that provided several students the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional automotive designers and painters to create a paint design for the new 2018 Ford Mustang and F-150 Truck.

 

At the time, both of these vehicles had never be been revealed to the public. The students worked daily for several weeks with the automotive professionals in the automotive paint booth at Morse High. These pre-production vehicles where then transported and revealed for the first time at the 2017 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) automotive convention in Las Vegas. After the SEMA show, both vehicles were put on display at the 2018 Detroit and LA Auto shows, which attract thousands of automotive aficionados each year

 

The automotive program at Morse High School is just one example of the multiple college, career and technical education (CCTE) opportunities available to San Diego Unified high school students. CCTE courses are offered in 15 industry sectors, including automotive, culinary arts, and broadcast, and are aimed at providing students with skills in-line with local and economic workforce needs, and necessary for success in post-secondary life, whether that be college, entry-level employment or career advancement.

The San Diego Unified School District was one of only three nationwide selected this year to be provided free public school "peer-to-peer" concerts and workshops by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. With lead funding from United Airlines and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Institute will bring this unique education program into San Diego public schools May 21-25. Combining performance with educational information, these "informances" will be presented by six of the country's most gifted high school music students along with internationally acclaimed jazz guitar recording artist Bobby Broom, Kansas City jazz and blues vocalist and former winner of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Vocals Competition Lisa Henry, and renowned jazz educator Dr. JB Dyas. Each school visit will include an assembly program featuring musical performances for all students, followed by jazz workshops for each school's jazz band and choir with the visiting student performers playing alongside and sharing ideas with their San Diego counterparts. Besides playing jazz at a level that belies their years, the students will talk with their Southern California peers about what jazz is, why it's important to America, and how a jazz ensemble represents a perfect democracy. They also will discuss important American values that jazz represents: teamwork, freedom with responsibility, unity with ethnic diversity, the correlation of hard work and goal accomplishment, and the importance of finding a passion early in life, being persistent, and believing in yourself. When young people hear this important message from kids their same age, they are often more likely to listen.

The purpose of "The Prom Experience" is to remove financial barriers and provide the opportunity for underprivileged seniors to attend the prom. The seniors receive, prom Attire (e.g. dress, suit, fitting), personal Stylist, glam Squad (e.g. hairstyling, haircut, make-up, shave), VIP pre- prom event and photo session. This year, the event has sponsored 9 seniors who wrote inspirational essays and demonstrated a significant financial need. WHAT: California recognizes the important contributions of classified school employees by naming the third full week of May "Classified School Employee Week" to honor these contributions. Classified school employees play crucial roles in education. From transporting and feeding students to teaching them vital skills and ensuring that schools are operating smoothly, classified employees are integral to public education. The San Diego Unified Classified Employee event honors the district's 2018 Classified Employee of the Year, the Classified Employee of the Year Runner Up and more than 120 classified employees from individual schools and departments.

ATTENDEES INCLUDE: Board of Education members, district leadership, school administrators, families and friends of classified employees being recognized, student performers from Mission Bay High School and entertainment by the Fat Shirley Band.

VISUALS: The district Classified Employee of the Year being honored with a video tribute, runner-up receiving special recognition and site classified employees of the year being recognized. Attendance is typically 200-250 people. Culinary students from Mira Mesa and San Diego high schools are prepping and serving food during the reception. The Gypsy Jazz Quartet from Mission Bay High School will provide entertainment during the reception. Piatt Pund, a member of the Gypsy Jazz Quartet will sing the National Anthem. The Fat Shirley Band will provide entertainment during the ceremony.
