San Diego Unified Earns Silver Level Green Ribbon Schools Award from California Department of Education

 

April 29, 2020

 

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Unified has been recognized as a statewide leader in sustainability, winning the California Department of Education’s (CDE) Silver Level Green Ribbon Schools designation. The recognition honors schools and school districts for excellence in resource efficiency, health and wellness, and environmental and sustainability education. The CDE convened an interagency stakeholder group to evaluate applicants by demonstrated achievements in three key areas:

 

Pillar I: Reduce environmental impact and costs

Pillar II: Improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff

Pillar III: Provide effective environmental education, which teaches many disciplines, and is especially good at effectively incorporating STEM, civic skills, and green career pathways

 

“When we say San Diego Unified is committed to combating climate change and building a more sustainable future, we absolutely mean it,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “It isn’t just about building more sustainable facilities; we are empowering students with knowledge, so they can make lasting changes for the rest of their lives.”

 

San Diego Unified is one of eight districts recognized by the California Department of Education this year.

 

The CDE’s recognition is part of a broader effort by the US Department of Education to highlight green practices that engage students and improve academic achievement, graduation rates, and workforce preparedness. 

 

In 2013, The San Diego Unified Board of Education (BOE) established the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee, leading to the District Climate Action Plan which was board-adopted in 2015.The Climate Action Plan outlines several key goals:  1. Increase energy efficiency and renewable energy to achieve 100% clean electricity by 2035; 2. Increase alternative modes of transportation in student and employee commuting; 3. Transition to a cleaner, more efficient vehicle fleet;  and 4. reduce waste and increase water efficiency.

Nearly 90 Percent of San Diego Unified Students Connected to Schools Ahead of Distance Learning Launch on Monday, April 27

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Unified School District announced nearly 90 percent of students have connected to Distance Learning since the start of the soft launch period on April 6. Students and teachers will begin formal graded online instruction on Monday, April 27.

 

Student connectivity is based on the number of individually identified students logging in to connect with their teachers and schools during the soft launch of Distance Learning. Log-ins were captured across a variety of platforms.

 

“When the Covid-19 crisis forced us to close schools on March 13, even then, we were clear in our determination that this school year will count for our students. We will recognize the work they have completed, give them the opportunity to learn more, make this academic year count for all our students,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “We have been equally clear that these opportunities must be available to all our students, because equity is at the core of our work.”

 

Partnerships with internet service providers have encouraged qualifying families to take advantage of free or discounted full-service internet offers, such as the Cox Connect2Compete program.

 

“As we’ve all been adapting in these uncertain times, Cox has remained focused on keeping all of our customers connected, and supporting those with the greatest need, such as San Diego Unified as they transition their students to Distance Learning,” said Sam Attisha, senior vice president and region manager for Cox Communications in California.

 

San Diego Unified has distributed more than 47,000 laptops to students since April 6, while students have engaged in online learning. At the same time, teachers have participated in professional development sessions designed to help them shift their practices from the classroom to the computer.

 

"Our shared efforts to support students, families, and educators are critical in this moment of crisis,” said San Diego Education Association (SDEA) President Kisha Borden. “We are here for each other and will continue to stay connected and educate our students during this difficult time."

 

Ahead of Monday’s formal rollout of Distance Learning, San Diego Unified has coordinated an outreach effort to contact the remaining students who have yet to connect with their schools. Computers are still available to any student who needs one, and are available for pick up at designated distribution centers through May 1. 

 

“While the majority of students have connected with their schools, we have more work to do,” Marten said. “We want every single student to continue their education. This school year matters, and so do all of our students.”

In addition to providing computers to students, San Diego Unified has distributed more than a half-million meals to students since schools were shuttered. Under collaboration with Feeding San Diego and the San Diego Food Bank, fruit, vegetables and other groceries have also been distributed to families at designated schools. Starting this week, students will receive additional meals on Thursdays and Fridays to help carry them through the weekends.

 

With more than 100,000 students and some 6,000 teachers, San Diego Unified is California’s second-largest school district.

BACKGROUND:                

San Diego Unified began its soft launch of Distance Learning on April 6, after collaborating with the SDEA in an effort to allow students to resume their education amid the COVID-19 crisis. Leading up to the return of graded instruction, the district has provided teachers with the professional resources they need to shift their work online. At the same time, computers have been distributed to students allowing them to reconnect with teachers during the soft launch period of Distance Learning.  

San Diego Unified was the state’s largest district to announce a plan to return to formal graded instruction. 

For the three-week period between April 6 and April 24, students receive credit for work that is done, although material has not been graded. On April 27, graded instruction will resume for traditional schools, and May 11 for year-round schools, for the remainder of the academic year

San Diego Unified Board of Education Holds First Remote Meeting Amid Social Distancing, Approves Grade Protection Policy, 'Hazard Pay' for Employees, Emergency School Funding Resolution  

April 14, 2020

San Diego - At its first regular meeting since COVID-19 forced school closures effective March 16, the San Diego Unified Board of Education approved critical initiatives to help students, employees and schools continue to function amid this pandemic.

At the meeting conducted remotely in accordance with social distancing protocols, the board unanimously approved the following items: 

Hazard Pay: Time-and-a-half pay will be offered retroactive to March 16 to employees serving as disaster service workers in the effort to distribute computers and meals to students. 

Grade Protection: A policy to be in place while teachers and students are engaged in Distance Learning stipulates students will be "held harmless," and will not receive grades that are lower than their grades prior to school closures. 

Emergency Funding: The board called on its Congressional delegation of U.S. Senators, members of the House of Representatives, and Gov. Gavin Newsom to prioritize school funding to stabilize public education in light of the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis which has negatively affected the ability of schools to provide fundamental educational services to its students.

The board approved a resolution from a coalition of national education organizations calling on legislators to provide emergency financial support for schools nationwide in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The groups have called for $200 billion to begin providing meaningful relief to our nation's public schools. The coalition estimates additional relief totaling $350 billion will likely be needed to ensure public school funding is stabilized over the next two years.

"These funds are not a wish list. They're a needs list," says Board Vice President Richard Barrera. "In the months and years ahead, public school students should not have to bear the overwhelming brunt of this emergency. They deserve to have their education valued and protected by lawmakers."

Superintendent Cindy Marten provided an update on the soft launch of the district's Distance Learning plan, now in its second week. A majority of students will begin graded online instruction on April 27, when the new grading policy will also go into effect.

"A crisis like this one may change the way we operate, but it will never change who we are," Marten said. "How we operate has definitely changed. We are on track to distribute well over 40,000 computers to students across the city, and we have provided close to 400,000 meals to families in need. And now we are getting ready for the biggest change of all. We are about to open a classroom in the clouds for all our students."

Teachers will continue to assess student learning, even if state and district testing is suspended during the period of closure. Classroom assessments may inform decisions on further support and resources during distance learning.

San Diego Unified, Educators Finalize Distance Learning Agreement, Soft Launch Starts Monday

SAN DIEGO - A Distance Learning plan for all students in the San Diego Unified School District is officially set for a soft launch on Monday, April 6.

 

The district received the final support necessary after reaching a Tentative Agreement with the San Diego Education Association (SDEA). The district now has the full backing of stakeholders to provide all students with the opportunity to finish the school year they started months ago while providing teachers with the professional resources they need.

 

“This emergency may change the way we operate, but it will not change who we are as educators or who we are as a district,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “Our commitment from the beginning of the current health crisis was to find a way to keep students safe, while still providing them the opportunity to continue their education. We made the decision to close schools to protect students -- before the state required us to do so, and from that moment forward, thousands of dedicated professionals in the district have been working nonstop to come up with a plan to connect students with their teachers.”

 

San Diego Unified is the state’s largest district to announce a plan to return formal grading and instruction. Those changes will take effect following the soft launch period, which runs from April 6-24. Districts around the state are still working to transition to online and graded instruction. 

 

“This agreement reflects our shared commitment to continue serving students under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable,” said SDEA President Kisha Borden.

 

Starting April 6, computers and/or internet access will be provided to all district students who need them, and teachers will begin communicating with students online. For the three-week period between April 6 and April 24, students will be given credit for work that is done, although material will not be graded. On April 27, graded instruction will resume for traditional schools, and May 11 for year-round schools, for the remainder of the academic year.

 

For students in TK-12 who need a computer, Chromebooks will be available for check-out, depending on where students attend school, at the following high schools: Clairemont, Crawford, Hoover, Lincoln, Morse, San Diego High and Scripps Ranch. Families will receive information this weekend on when and where to pick up their Chromebooks.

 

Families who need internet connectivity within the Cox service area should sign up for the Connect2Compete program, which offers free Cox installation and internet services for the next 60 days.
