San Diego Unified implements minimum day schedules at many schools Sept. 1 due to anticipated high temperatures
We are aware that high temperatures are expected tomorrow, and we want to make sure that our students and staff are as comfortable as possible so that learning can continue.
When temperatures are expected to be 95 degrees or higher with a heat index of 103 degrees or higher, campuses with less than 80 percent of their classrooms air conditioned may be instructed to move to a minimum day schedule. The Superintendent's decision to call a half day is a collaborative effort among district staff and school communities to determine what's in the best interest of students.
All district schools have Hot Weather Plans in place and will implement those plans tomorrow. We are proud that the number of schools with air conditioning has increased over the past year as we work to install air conditioning at all our schools.

WHERE: Wegeforth Elementary School, 3443 Ediwhar Avenue, San Diego, CA 92123
DETAILS: Wegeforth Elementary is only 1 of 2 schools in San Diego County that won the Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant. With those funds, they have constructed a beautiful garden that will be used by teachers and students during the upcoming school year as an outdoor classroom and community garden.
The new garden will provide a shady, peaceful spot for parents to wait for their children to be dismissed from school, or to read with their children. Teachers will be able to conduct science lessons and experiments around plants, beginning with kindergarten and the parts of a flower, all the way up to how plants can convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen through photosynthesis.
One exciting feature in the new garden will be an electrical vault transformed into a chalkboard that teachers will be able to bring their classes to during the instructional day.
Media is invited to tour the garden and share in excitement ahead of the first day of school.

WHAT: More than 111,000 students in the San Diego Unified School District will head back to school on August 28. Join Supt. Cindy Marten, school board members, school administrators, teachers, parents and students as we kick off the new 2017-2018 school year.
DETAILS:
1) SDUSD Districtwide – Back-to-School Initiatives
- Academics is of course at the core of our mission.
The Class of 2018 will be our third to graduate under new rigorous high school graduation standards that require students complete the sequence of courses necessary to apply to a UC or CSU campus. The graduation standards are part of a broader effort to ensure that all of our students – regardless of ZIP code or family income - are prepared for college, careers, the military and a successful life in the 21st Century.
- Wellness: For the first time, all of our schools will have their own Wellness Plan this year. This will give parents a chance to get involved and help establish a plan that meets the fitness and nutrition needs of their children. That could include finding ways to celebrate classroom birthdays with fewer sweet treats or incorporating jumping jacks into a math lesson. The district is also poised to be a leader in clean drinking water under our efforts to test for lead and remediate water fountains.
- The Arts: We are proud that Sequoia Elementary School is our newest Visual and Performing Arts magnet school. All of our students have access to the arts, but this magnet gives students who want a school-wide emphasis in the arts to have that experience. When parents tell us over and over that they want more magnet schools tied to the arts, we listened. Districtwide, we continue to offer a rich education in music and art to our students.
- Science& Technology: Our newest STEAM cluster in Linda Vista incorporates science, technology, engineering and mathematics into the school year in a meaningful way. These, of course, are courses that are increasingly essential for college and careers – for life in general! The district is working to give middle school students technology-rich maker spaces.
- All of San Diego Unified's students continue to learn using the latest technology and coordinating teaching strategies, again thanks to our voter-approved bond measures. In addition to many of these new maker spaces, our district is also excited to unveil brand new school-site facilities that focus on science, technology and college and career readiness.
- Civic Leadership: We encourage our students – and give them the tools -- to get involved and make a positive change in the world. Our new partnership with the Anti-Defamation League will put the successful No Place for Hate program in all of our schools. We have been leaders in promoting tolerance in the name of all our students. We have new Student Equity Ambassadors at our high schools who will take that work to a new level.

3rd Annual San Diego Unified School Police "True Blue Buddies" Yearlong Mentorship Program Kicks-Off with Back-to-School Shopping Spree
WHAT: The third annual San Diego Unified School District Police Department "True Blue Buddies" event will pair 30 deserving students from Dewey Elementary School with San Diego Unified School Police Officers for a $100 back-to-school shopping spree at Target.
WHEN: Thursday, August 24, 2017, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
WHERE: Dewey Elementary School, 3251 Rosecrans St, San Diego (92110)
Target, 3245 Sports Arena Blvd, San Diego (92110)
DETAILS: Third-through fifth-grade students from Dewey Elementary will receive a $100 gift card to spend on school supplies, new clothes and shoes courtesy of Target, as well as a brand new backpack courtesy of San Diego Unified to ensure that they will start the new school year ready to learn on school Monday, Aug. 28, 2017.
Each student will be partnered with a member of the San Diego Unified School Police Department. Participants were selected based on need, and include students from low-income families, military families and homeless families. The event is being supported by the district's Children and Youth in Transition program, San Diego Unified School Police and the Sports Arena Target store team.
The Back-to-School shopping spree serves as the kick-off event to a yearlong mentorship program that includes various events over the school year, including educational workshops and holiday gatherings. The primary goal of the mentorship program is to provide support through small group mentoring, as well as to help facilitate and build positive relationships with Police Officers at an early age.
San Diego Unified has always been focused on giving our students the tools to get involved and make a positive change in the world – in their classroom, on the playground, in the cafeteria, school-wide, in the community and beyond! Programs like this encourage our students to make good choices every day and have positive relationships with their teachers, parents, school police and the community as a whole. San Diego Unified is proud to support the "True Blue Buddies" program for the third year in a row. Showing our students that they have the encouragement and support of their entire community can have a huge positive impact on them becoming successful contributors of society.

Morse High School Students Return to School With New Career Skills Thanks to Summer STEM Solar Work Experience; Innovative STEM program gives students the opportunity to practice their leadership skills with a hands-on experience in the green energy sector
San Diego, Calif., Aug. 18, 2017 – In collaboration with the Morse High School STEM team, San Diego Unified School District and OpTerra Energy Services developed a five-session summer program for students in the school’s STEM Distinction Program.
Students got a unique learning opportunity while the photovoltaic (PV) site was under construction. OpTerra provided solar education resources and hands-on materials, subject matter experts, and guest speakers at the construction site to teach students about solar panel technology and the green energy industry.
The 19 students in the program were divided into three groups, each working with a teacher and an OpTerra mentor to research and create a functional solar product that can be utilized by San Diego Unified and OpTerra, allowing the students to meet their summer STEM requirements. The student groups created:
• A video on best practices for maintenance of the photovoltaic panels and best energy use practices for building occupants.
• A unit on solar energy that can be implemented and used with other San Diego Unified schools.
• A pilot engineering design to create an inexpensive way to clean PV panels on a more regular basis to maintain better output.
“This program provides a unique opportunity for bright and innovative high school students to learn about real life applications of STEM,” said Crista Curtis, Regional Business Development Manager, OpTerra Energy Services. “We are thrilled to work with the San Diego Unified School District on educational opportunities like these.”
Funds from the San Diego Workforce Partnership paid students a stipend for participation in the Summer STEM Solar Program.
“It is these innovative programs that encourage students to pursue careers in science,” said Alfred Love, Director of College, Career, and Technical Education at San Diego Unified. “The kids in this program got to see how science and mathematics can be applied in the real world. They had to work in teams to research and produce a solar product, much like a real job. These students will have a leg-up as they pursue their educational and career aspirations.”
Construction of the solar photovoltaic canopies was funded by San Diego Unified’s Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified.

WHAT: In collaboration with the Morse High School STEM team, San Diego Unified School District and OpTerra Energy Services developed a five-session summer program for students in the school's STEM Distinction Program. BACKGROUND: Hungry kids can’t learn. That is why San Diego Unified is committed to helping ensure all students have access to nutritious meals at school. As part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, qualifying students may receive free or reduced-price meals. Keeping the high cost of living in San Diego into account, the district helps families on the edge by waiving the reduced price fee, thereby allowing those students to eat for free. Also, 89 district schools qualify under Community Eligibility Provision and Provision 2, which allows all students who attend those schools to receive a nutritious breakfast and lunch every day at no cost.
Unfortunately, there are families just on the edge of the income qualifications that do not qualify for free meals on paper, but in reality need assistance paying for meals for their kids. We do not want any students to fall through the cracks and go hungry, that is why the district is taking the unique approach of partnering with School Lunch Fairy to solicit the support of the community to raise funds to help students who need assistance in paying for school meals.
Dalton Rapattoni, The House On Cliff , and Lauren Carnahan are making a stop in San Diego for their summer tour across 18 cities. The tour will be helping School Lunch Fairy raise funds and increase awareness about the issue of lunch debt.
Inspired by a report on NPR news about school lunch shaming, Christian Cordon-Cano and Bernardo Hasbach, both high school juniors in Florida, launched School Lunch Fairy to raise funds to help kids pay for school lunch. In just a few months, they rose over $10,000 and have donated to schools in California, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, New Jersey, and Washington. “But we won´t stop there,” says Christian Cordon-Cano, adding that “our objective is to help kids in every state in the country.”
“That´s why we are so excited to help School Lunch Fairy raise funds. These teen-agers rock.” says William Santana, bassist for The House On Cliff, adding “I’ve seen how hard it is for someone to skip a meal or two at school because you don't have money. No kid should ever go hungry at school in America.”

Free Military Appreciation Event to Help Families, Children Prepare for New School Year
WHAT: The San Diego Unified School District serves more than 9,000 military-connected students each year. Many are new to the area and will be entering a new school in San Diego Unified on August 28, 2017. To help make the transition easier for these families and get a head-start on back-to-school preparations, the district, along with the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, is hosting a Military Enrollment Event. Parents will have the opportunity to enroll new students in the district (appointments are available; walk-ins are welcome) and get vaccinations required for school enrollment (courtesy of Naval Medical Center San Diego). All attendees will receive a free lunch and students will receive free school supplies, courtesy of They Serve 2.
WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
7-9 a.m.: Volunteers from the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard will help staff set up for the event.
9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Hundreds of families will have the opportunity to enroll their student(s), gather helpful information from military and community organizations and district departments, receive free school supplies and free required immunizations, if needed.
11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Free BBQ Lunch
