San Diego Unified Announces Selection of New Interim Principal for Lincoln High School
SAN DIEGO (May 30, 2017) – The San Diego Unified School District will announce at this evening's general board meeting that Mr. Jose Soto-Ramos has been offered the opportunity to serve as the Interim Principal for the 2017-2018 school year at Lincoln High School.
The decision to select Soto-Ramos as the Interim Principal was a true collaborative effort and one that was made after careful consideration and discussions with a panel comprised of teachers, students, parents, community members and district officials.
"The internal designation to appoint Mr. Soto-Ramos as the Interim Principal was based on the panel's recommendations to ensure that his new role would be paired with the necessary district supports for a successful school year," said Bruce Bivins, a San Diego Unified Area Superintendent. "To that end, and based on the panel's recommendation, the district is in the process of securing a strategic partnership with UCSD's Dr. Heather Lattimer, who would bring strategic support to Mr. Soto-Ramos."
As the Interim Principal, Soto-Ramos will play a lead role in continuing the academic success and collegial visions for Lincoln High School. This will be his first principalship.
Soto-Ramos has been the Vice-Principal at Lincoln High School for the past five years. Prior experience included serving as a San Diego Unified Mathematics Teacher, and as both a District Mathematics Coordinator and a Vice Principal in Texas. In addition, Soto-Ramos is a veteran of the United States Navy.
Throughout his five years at Lincoln High School, Soto-Ramos has developed a great bond with the students and families he serves, and he will continue to nurture those bonds in his new role. Soto-Ramos has demonstrated a strong commitment to solving problems using restorative approaches at both the student and community level, and his passion for Lincoln High School stems from his belief in the students and community.
Superintendent Cindy Marten notified the Board of her appointment in closed session earlier this afternoon.
At this time, San Diego Unified is no longer pursuing a candidate search to fill the Lincoln High School Principal position.

Principals, counselors, parents and other family members will be in attendance along with Board of Education members and Supt. Cindy Marten. Ed Abeyta, UCSD Assistant Dean and Director, Pre-College Programs, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Marilyn Hannes, Park President of SeaWorld and Aquatica, will welcome the attendees. Lindsey Latson from Lincoln High School is the student speaker. Musical entertainment is being provided by San Diego High School's Chamber Orchestra."
This annual event brings students together from all San Diego Unified high schools, where they receive a certificate and a medal marking their achievement. Some of these students are the first in their families to go to college. Some of the schools that students will be attending in the fall include Stanford, Cornell, Princeton, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego and Yale.
PHOTOS/INTERVIEWS: Students and family members will be on hand to speak on their challenges in achieving academic excellence. Each principal will introduce his/her students, then move from the stage to outside the pavilion for photos; interviews can also be conducted there.

Students share products they produce and business problems they solve in collaboration with members of the local business community. More than 300 industry professionals volunteered to be mentors, guest speakers, or advisors for our students.
This year CCTE is once again collaborating with Nick Cannon Foundation to host the foundation's America's Teen Mogul (ATM) Showcase and Student Business Plan Competition (BPC) designed to educate youth to the global career and entrepreneur opportunities available on the "business side" of the mega multi-media/entertainment industries including high priority job markets in San Diego. As part of the ATM Competition there will also be a panel of business executives who will speak and answer questions about the unlimited opportunities that exist for young entrepreneurs. The CCTE Showcase panel of judges is comprised of members of the greater San Diego business community and other industry and corporate partners as well as personnel from the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD).
The CCTE Showcase is open to the public. There is no charge to attend the event.

WHAT: San Diego Unified School District and City of San Diego leaders will join more than 400 students, parents and community members at a press conference and ceremonial ribbon cutting to celebrate the end of construction on the new McKinley Elementary School Joint-use Park in the North Park Community.
WHEN: Tuesday, May 23 - 10 to 10:30 a.m.

Media parking will be available on site by entering the parking lot off Redwood Street (north side of campus). Media and guests may also park on Palm Street (south side) for close access to the site.

PROJECT OVERVIEW: The joint-use park is an approximately 1.34-acre site at McKinley Elementary School. The improvements include natural grass turf, new trees and other landscaping, irrigation, a baseball backstop, an expanded asphalt-concrete play area with play court markings and a decomposed granite running path. There is also concrete paving for accessibility, security gates and fencing, as well as renovation of site walls, stairs and ramps as required. Construction began May 2016. The more than $2.1 million project is funded by San Diego Unified's Proposition Z, the school district's capital improvement bond measure passed by voters in 2012. The district is developing the park, and the city will maintain it.
This project supports the district's goal to create quality neighborhood schools and the city's Play All Day Parks Program. The facility will enhance physical and outdoor education opportunities for students, while providing recreational, social and cultural benefits to the community. The joint-use park was conceptually designed in conjunction with the community and within the guidelines of the city's North Park Community Plan.
BACKGROUND: The City of San Diego and San Diego Unified School District have been cooperating in the development of numerous joint-use recreational facilities for more than 60 years. To date, the city uses more than 280 acres of school district property for more than 70 joint-use fields/parks. The facilities are used by the schools during school hours, then opened to the community after school, on weekends and during school breaks. Under the new Play All Day Parks Program, the city and district committed to developing over 45 additional joint-use fields/parks during the next five to 10 years.

WHAT: San Diego Unified School District and City of San Diego leaders will join more than 400 students, parents and community members at a press conference and ceremonial ribbon cutting to celebrate the end of construction on the new McKinley Elementary School Joint-use Park in the North Park Community.

Media parking will be available on site by entering the parking lot off Redwood Street (north side of campus). Media and guests may also park on Palm Street (south side) for close access to the site.

PROJECT OVERVIEW: The joint-use park is an approximately 1.34-acre site at McKinley Elementary School. The improvements include natural grass turf, new trees and other landscaping, irrigation, a baseball backstop, an expanded asphalt-concrete play area with play court markings and a decomposed granite running path. There is also concrete paving for accessibility, security gates and fencing, as well as renovation of site walls, stairs and ramps as required. Construction began May 2016. The more than $2.1 million project is funded by San Diego Unified’s Proposition Z, the school district’s capital improvement bond measure passed by voters in 2012. The district is developing the park, and the city will maintain it.
This project supports the district’s goal to create quality neighborhood schools and the city’s Play All Day Parks Program. The facility will enhance physical and outdoor education opportunities for students, while providing recreational, social and cultural benefits to the community. The joint-use park was conceptually designed in conjunction with the community and within the guidelines of the city's North Park Community Plan.
BACKGROUND: The City of San Diego and San Diego Unified School District have been cooperating in the development of numerous joint-use recreational facilities for more than 60 years. To date, the city uses more than 280 acres of school district property for more than 70 joint-use fields/parks. The facilities are used by the schools during school hours, then opened to the community after school, on weekends and during school breaks. Under the new Play All Day Parks Program, the city and district committed to developing over 45 additional joint-use fields/parks during the next five to 10 years.

WHAT: California recognizes the important contributions of classified school employees by naming the third full week of May "Classified School Employee Week" to honor these contributions. Classified school employees play crucial roles in education. From transporting and feeding students to teaching them vital skills and ensuring that schools are operating smoothly, classified employees are integral to public education. The San Diego Unified Classified Employee event honors the district's 2017 Classified Employee of the Year, the Classified Employee of the Year Runner Up and more than 100 classified employees from individual schools and departments.

DETAILS: This year’s Classified Employee of the Year is Carolina Iglesias, enrollment clerk at Marston Middle School in Clairemont. Iglesias starts her day with morning bus supervision, making sure students safely reach campus. Her job duties include handling student enrollment, transportation issues, entering behavior referrals and handling the Core Academy Supporting Student Achievement Success. She also takes on many other tasks during the school year, including coordinating Career Day and the 8th Grade Exit Exhibitions.
This year’s runner up is Jeanne Stifter, school clerk at Jerabek Elementary in Scripps Ranch. For the past eight years, Stifter has served Jerabek Elementary and its school community. Stifter’s work in the office is likened to her classroom. She believes in the highest quality of service to her clientele, which includes students, parents, staff and community members. She is kind and gentle in her approach to working with students who come in to the office seeking assistance. With every word and action, Stifter teaches children how to seek help and advocate with their voice.
In addition to the ceremony, there is a reception that starts at 4:15 p.m. Students from San Diego Unified's award-winning culinary arts programs at Madison and San Diego high schools will be prepping and serving appetizers and desserts. The String Quartet from Patrick Henry High School will provide music.

Captain Michael Marquez Named New San Diego School Police Chief
San Diego native is a police force veteran of 27 years
SAN DIEGO (May 16, 2017) – Captain Michael Marquez, a veteran San Diego School Police Captain, has been named the new San Diego School Police Chief.
Captain Marquez, who previously served as the Interim Chief for the San Diego Unified School Police Department, is a 27-year police force veteran. His career began in 1990, when he served with the National City Police Department as a patrol officer for more than 11 years.
In 2001, Captain Marquez joined San Diego Unified's Police Department. and, after serving for two years as the full-time officer at Mission Bay High School, his diverse skills and experience prompted his promotion in 2003 to School Police Sergeant. Promotions to Lieutenant, and then Captain, followed. Captain Marquez is a graduate of the Sherman Block Leadership Institute, and holds a Management Certification from California Peace Officer Standards and Training.
Captain Marquez was directly mentored by the last two School Police Chiefs in the art of "school-oriented policing," community engagement, and educating children holistically (caring for the "whole" child).
While serving as Interim School Police Chief, Captain Marquez set the bar high for all Officers, requiring them to be innovative and progressive in their approach to campus safety, and using diversion and restorative practices to improve public trust. Officers have become more involved in the positive aspects of campus life; again, building strong relationships with students to minimize negative contacts while promoting a "guardian mentality," rather than a persona of "law enforcers."
In his spare time, Captain Marquez is a devoted family man, having been married to his wife Dawn for 21-years. They have 20-year-old twin daughters, Camille and Analyssa, who just completed their sophomore year at San Diego State University. A teenager – 13-year-old Noah – rounds out the family. Captain Marquez has coached all of his children in youth sports since they were young, and he looks forward to continuing to do so.

San Diego Unified Teacher Lay Off Notices Cut In Half; Successful early retirement program paves way for nearly 500 pink-slipped teachers to return to school in the fall
SAN DIEGO (May 11, 2017) – A unified Board of Trustees voted 5-0 tonight to bring back close to 500 teachers who had been facing possible layoffs, including many physical education (PE) and music teachers. In all, about 50% of the teachers who received preliminary pink slips in March will be back in schools this fall. Most of the cancelled layoff notices are due to a successful early retirement program, which was also approved unanimously at the Board meeting this evening.
Two months ago, in March, the district mailed preliminary layoff notices to approximately 952 teachers. Some 371 of those were final notices sent to probationary teachers who had been with the district for a short time. Of the remaining 581 pink slipped teachers, the Board voted tonight to send final layoff notices to just 96 of them. In all, 485 teachers, or 51%, of the 952 teachers thought to be leaving the district will, in fact, return to school this fall.
Among the returning educators are the PE teachers at both Birney Elementary School and Crawford High School, and the Music teacher from Pacific Beach Middle School. Students supporting all three of those educators had testified before the school board in a bid to restore their teacher’s positions. In addition to tonight’s 485 rescinded pink slips, last month the board voted to shelve a plan to lay off a portion of the district’s Library teachers.
In total, 528 teachers took advantage of an early retirement plan put forward by school officials in an effort to reduce layoffs. The number of retirees was about 14% higher than the 463 retirements projected by outside consultants. In a typical year, about 150 San Diego Unified teachers decide to retire. The 528 early retirements resulted in a significant reduction in the number of layoffs, as all but 10 of the retirees will be replaced.
San Diego Unified continues to face an expected budget shortfall of $124.4 million for the coming school year and is legally required to approve a balanced budget by the end of next month. For that reason, the district still plans to move forward with significant workforce reduction measures. Next week, on May 16, the school board is expected to vote on the district’s third interim budget. That budget update will be the first since the Governor announced his own revised budget – the May Revise, earlier today. Numbers in the Governor’s budget are not expected to significantly impact the San Diego Unified School District’s budget outlook for 2017-2018, as the district has been running a structural deficit of more than $60 million for each of the past 5 years.
