NEWS RELEASE: San Diego Unified School District Opens 2019-20 School Choice Application Window Oct. 1; More than 10,000 area students expected to apply

News Release from the San Diego Unified School District, Sept. 28, 2018

San Diego Unified School District Opens 2019-20 School Choice Application Window Oct. 1; More than 10,000 area students expected to apply

SAN DIEGO - Monday, October 1, marks the start of the school choice window for the 2019-20 school year at San Diego Unified School District. School Choice gives students the chance to enroll next year in magnet programs or schools outside their neighborhood boundaries. The program is open to all existing San Diego Unified students, as well as out of district students, and students attending schools in other settings such as private or charter schools.

Each year, more than 10,000 area students apply for the choice program to attend one of the 170 schools in San Diego Unified. Last year, approximately 75 percent of all students were seated at one of their three choices of schools.

“All of our schools provide students with an education that will prepare them for college or career,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “Many our magnets offer outstanding STEAM programs that include access to state-of-the-art maker spaces and advanced technology. New programs like Blue Tech are really taking shape in our coastal schools, and arts are alive and well throughout the district. There really is no better time to attend a San Diego Unified School District school.”

Families within the San Diego Unified School District will receive enrollment catalogues in the mail next week. They can also find their neighborhood school by visiting www.sandiegounified.org/schoolfinder.  The enrollment catalog is also available online in both English and Spanish at: https://www.sandiegounified.org/enrollment-guide.

San Diego Unified also offers personalized consultations for families who want to discuss their options with an enrollment specialist. The bilingual staff at the Family Welcome and Enrollment Center is available at 619-260-2410 or eoptions@sandi.net to provide assistance in English and Spanish, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We are fully staffed and ready to support parents – in English and Spanish – through the selection and application process,” said Marceline Marques, Operations Support Officer at the Family Welcome and Enrollment Center.

Choice applications must be submitted online at https://www.sandiegounified.org/school-choice-application . If families are unable to access the online application, they should contact the Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options Office at 619-260-2410, send an email to eoptions@sandi.net, or contact any school for assistance. The priority application deadline is November 13. After that date, any applications received are processed in time/date order of receipt.

Families will receive an email notification in late February indicating if they have been accepted or waitlisted to a school of Choice.  School Choice enrollment is determined through a computerized lottery system, with weight given to factors such as sibling enrollment and magnet program continuity. No priority is given based on when the application is received, so long as it is received by the November 13 deadline.

Media Advisory form the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education

Media Advisory from the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education

Sept. 24, 2018

Board Trustee John Lee Evans to Present Report on Vision 2020, Propose Resolution to Begin Development of Vision 2030 at Tuesday’s Board Of Education Meeting

Board Trustee John Lee Evans will bring forward a report at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting he authored on the progress of Vision 2020, the district’s long-term plan for student achievement created in 2009.

In that report, Evans highlights five areas of major change from 2008 to 2018, which include:

1.    Major high school transformation giving students access to a variety of career pathways, increased opportunities to enroll in AP and college courses on all high school campuses, promoting offer new career technical courses, more rigorous high school graduation requirements with a rising graduation rate for a more meaningful diploma and a narrowing of the achievement/opportunity gap for all groups of students (more students from all groups prepared for college and career)

2.    Preparing all students for a global society with world language classes for all: high school courses to meet college language requirement, speeding up the rate at which non-native speakers are becoming proficient in English, giving students credit if they can demonstrate proficiency in a native language other than English, and increasing opportunities for students to participate in language immersion programs

3.    Increasing teacher effectiveness by developing a growth and development model for teachers that will replace the old evaluation system and an increase across the district in the number of teachers participating in Professional Learning Communities with their peers

4.    Bringing 21st century technology into every classroom for every student for improvement and customization of instruction

5.    A facilities repair and renovation program to modernize our schools after decades of neglect, including new classroom buildings, collaborative learning spaces, PE/athletic facilities, arts and music facilities, safety upgrades and air conditioning in every classroom before 2020

Following the presentation, Trustee Evans will introduce a resolution proposing that the “district begin a school and community input process in the period leading up to 2020 that will determine the needs of our students under a new and updated Vision 2030, which will serve as a long term accountability plan for the district in the next decade.”

Later this month, the Board of Education will send out a brief survey to gauge stakeholder interest relating to district goals for the future.

The grant was sponsored by California State Senator Toni Atkins. Barona Tribal Vice Chairman Ray Welch presented the $5,000 check to students and Principal Tracey Jenkins-Martin.

Students at Montgomery Middle and throughout the Kearny Cluster have the opportunity to experience a STEAM education at all levels. It's one of several clusters in the district that provide students with a continuity of educational supports in a particular field or industry from grades TK-12.

As the third-largest, non-government employer of STEM professionals, Siemens supports schools and aims to inspire the next generation of leaders to think big, explore the world, and learn to solve problems with critical thinking and collaboration.

Kearny High School to celebrate gym remodel; honor former district employee who gave time, money to school

WHAT: Kearny High School is celebrating the completion of its gym remodel, which includes new flooring, bleachers, paint, lighting, scoreboards and athletic equipment, with a ribbon cutting and dedication. The remodel was funded in part by a generous donation from the U.S. Communities Foundation, a government purchasing cooperative that donated the money in memory of the district’s former Strategic Sourcing and Contracts Officer Arthur Hanby, who passed away in 2016.

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, 10:45 – 11:30 a.m.

WHERE: Kearny High School Gymnasium, 1954 Komet Way (92111)

DETAILS:

All students will be attending the celebration that will tentatively include the following:

  • 11 a.m.  Introductions and National Anthem
  • 11:10 a.m.  Guest Speakers (TBD)
  • 11:20 a.m.  Countdown to the ribbon-cutting begins
  • 11:25 a.m.  Cheer squad performs

BACKGROUND:

This dedication is of special significance to Kearny High and San Diego Unified. The U. S. Communities Foundation donated $50,000 to the project in memory of former district employee Arthur Hanby, who passed away in 2016.

Hanby, who led the district’s Procurement department for more than 16 years, helped save the district millions through his belief and practice in innovation sourcing. It is through this belief that the Strategic Sourcing and Contracts department is able to continually deliver supplies and services to students and staff quickly and at the best value. Under his leadership, the district was recognized year-after-year with the Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award from the National Procurement Institute.

Beyond being an extraordinary leader and visionary, he was also an exceptional individual. He developed a strong relationship with Kearny High School and its students after he supervised a Kearny student in a district internship program in 2007. Hanby mentored this student until his passing. He also visited Kearny often to speak directly with students and staff to ensure that district contracts where serving site needs. Each year, he and his wife donated personal funds to a college scholarship targeting seniors that had overcome adversity.

The U.S. Communities Government Purchasing Alliance is a government purchasing cooperative that reduces the cost of goods and services by aggregating the purchasing power of public agencies, including school districts, nationwide. When its Foundation learned of Hanby’s passing, they generously donated $50,000 to Kearny High School to continue Hanby’s legacy.

These funds, in addition to other district and site funds, were used to complete the year-long gym remodel project.

Please confirm your attendance.
