Mira Mesa High School to Receive Adaptive Sports Equipment from Challenged Athletes Foundation Club

SAN DIEGO – Mira Mesa High School will receive adaptive sports equipment to enhance sports and recreation programs for students with physical challenges.

“Hundreds of kids will benefit from the adaptive equipment,” says Mira Mesa High School teacher Christopher Sabin. “Every year, students in the Mira Mesa High adaptive sports program compete with other adaptive sports programs throughout the district in basketball, soccer and individual skills. Lacking the proper equipment, our biggest challenge to date was preparing for the competitions. Receiving this adaptive equipment will help our students develop the skills necessary to compete and be successful in a variety of sports.”

The Mira Mesa High School Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) Club, the first CAF Club in the nation, raised funds for the equipment and will present an adaptive basketball hoop and other specialized sports equipment to their school’s adaptive sports program at 9:30 a.m., on Friday, July 1, 2016 at Mira Mesa High School, 10150 Reagan Road (92126)

Students and staff will be on hand to demonstrate the new equipment and for interviews. For additional information visit: www.challengedathletes.org .

San Diego schools, US Defense Department make major announcement in time for Fourth of July

The San Diego Unified School District and the US Department of Defense are releasing good news for military families in time for the Fourth of July weekend. The county’s largest school system plans to spend $52 million renovating schools in the Tierrasanta community, which largely serve the children of our nation’s Armed Forces. Construction will begin this month, thanks in part to a large grant from the Department of Defense.

“We work every day to make sure our schools are worthy of the children we serve,” said San Diego School Superintendent Cindy Marten. “It is especially important at this time of year to honor our commitment to our military families. We want our men and women in uniform to know we value their service, and we appreciate the opportunity to serve their children in our schools.”

Aging portable classrooms – 30 of them – will be replaced by state-of-the-art, permanent classrooms at both Hancock and Miller elementary schools. The project is expected to last into the fall of 2018, although the schools will remain open during construction.

San Diego Unified School Board President Mike McQuary said, “We have a proud military tradition in San Diego, and we are glad to have the opportunity to give back to our service men and women by providing their children with the best possible learning environments.”

About 10 percent of the students in San Diego Unified School District are from military families with many served by Hancock and Miller elementary schools. Funding for renovations at the schools has been made possible through a grant from the Department of Defense in combination with local funds approved by voters under the Proposition Z bond program.

In addition to replacing the portable classroom units, the whole site modernization at Hancock and Miller will include:

·         Air conditioning

·         Upgrades to the technology network infrastructure to support the i21 Interactive 21st Century Classroom Technology Initiative

·         Improved safety systems for fires and other emergencies

·         New sidewalks including accessible ramps and stairs

·         Clean, modern lunchroom facilities

“Military families are part of what makes Tierrasanta such an amazing community,” said San Diego Unified former President Kevin Beiser, who represents the neighborhood on the School Board. “The major renovation plan we are announcing today will provide all Tierrasanta families, and especially those with a family member serving our country in the military, with quality learning environments to help their children grow and thrive.”

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE SAN DIEGO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT: Civic leaders stand with Supt. Cindy Marten to announce significant, systemic emphasis on ‘Restorative Justice’ next year in San Diego schools

News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Civic leaders stand with Supt. Cindy Marten to announce significant, systemic emphasis on 'Restorative Justice' next year in San Diego schools

Advocates for restorative justice say the program can help keep young people in school or on the job – and out of the prison system. Superintendent Cindy Marten agrees the program has the potential to help those students most at risk of serious discipline issues; however, she says restorative justice has the potential to help every student in the district by creating a more socially and emotionally welcoming environment. With that in mind, Superintendent Marten, today, announced a significant and systemic emphasis on restorative justice in the coming year under the plan included in the district's 2016-17 Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).

Among those joining Superintendent Marten to make the announcement were: Steve Dinkin, President of the National Conflict Resolution Center; CJ Robinson, United Way of San Diego Community Impact Manager; the Rev. Rickey Laster, Executive Director of the Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention; Board of Education President Mike McQuary; Lincoln High School teacher, Lori Williams; and student facilitator from Lincoln High School, Litzy Ramirez.

The Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) is the guiding document for the San Diego Unified school district. It is developed over months of community input, including hundreds of parents, educators and other stakeholders. The 2016-17 LCAP and the 2016-17 budget are set to be approved by the Board of Education on Tuesday, June 28. The emphasis on restorative justice is one of the most significant changes to take effect in the coming school year under the LCAP document.

San Diego Unified has had a pilot program for restorative justice since 2014, and is now prepared to take the successful results to scale across the district. Among the main benefits of the pilot program have been a sharp reduction in suspensions and expulsions and a more positive climate in the schools where the restorative practices have been emphasized.

USDA & Northgate Gonzalez Market Partner to End Hunger Among Kids & Teens

About 22 million children and teens receive free and reduced price meals through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National School Lunch Program.  However, only an estimated 3.8 million (1 in 6) participate in the USDA Summer Meals Programs. To help reach low-income children who fall victim to the nutrition gap that leaves millions without nutritious food to eat during the summer, USDA is partnering with Northgate Gonzalez Market. Through adverts in weekly circulars and in-store announcements, Northgate Gonzalez Market will play a critical role in ensuring more families in need learn about the summer meals programs, which are free to children and teens 18 and under.

In 2015, nearly 12 million meals were served to children and teens in San Diego County through USDA-funded summer meals programs.  According to FeedingAmerica.org, over 20 percent of children living in San Diego County go hungry—66 percent of them are from families living below the poverty line.
