News Release

San Diego High School Awarded Culinary Arts Grant by the Rachel Ray Foundation and Yum-o! Organization

SAN DIEGO (Feb. 27, 2020) – San Diego High School is one of eight schools across the country selected to receive special funding to upgrade and expand their ProStart programs thanks to $425,000 in grants from The Rachael Ray Foundation (RRF) and Rachael Ray’s Yum-o! Organization.

Through The Rachael Ray Foundation and Yum-o! Organization Grow Grants, the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) will provide funding for eight ProStart schools that are offering the program in an effort to engage and educate high school students interested in exploring restaurant and foodservice careers. San Diego High School was selected to receive $42,500 in funding for the initiative and will be able to use their grant funds starting this year.

“This grant will help grow our culinary arts and management program and educate the next generation of restaurant leaders,” said San Diego High School’s  TITLE HERE Brian Murphy.

ProStart, a two-year career and technical education program focused on culinary arts and restaurant management, is offered in 1,900 schools across the country and currently enrolls 150,000 students.

The funds will help the San Diego High ProStart program purchase new cookware and equipment that will be used to create a wellness-focused lunch and juice enterprise on campus. Grant funds will also be used to purchase culinary garden supplies, industry partner field trips and experiences, and professional development for the instructors.

“I am thrilled to see the incredible stories of these schools, these students and these teachers,” said Rachael Ray, award-winning television personality and philanthropist. “They’re already doing amazing work every day – and they’re all deserving of the opportunity to do even more. I can’t wait to see what we’re able to cook up with these students!”

Winning schools awarded a ProStart Grow Grant were required to demonstrate how the program is positively impacting their students and the community. “The ProStart Grow Grant initiative is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the winning schools and for ProStart on a larger scale,” said Rob Gifford, president of the NRAEF. “With these grants, we can introduce more students to careers in restaurants and hospitality, expand their learning to real-world experiences and grant them the chance to explore a future that is truly limitless.”

About San Diego High School

San Diego High has a rich history, dating back to 1882 when it opened its doors as Russ School. In 1914, Balboa Stadium was built behind San Diego High School, and would go on to become the home of the San Diego Chargers for six seasons, from 1961 to 1966. San Diego High boats many accomplishments including a big win at this year’s Iron Chef Competition.  On January 16, 2020, San Diego High School culinary students placed first place at the 15th Annual Teen Iron Chef Competition.

About the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation

PROJECT OVERVIEWS:

Culinary Remodel

The culinary remodel project includes the interior remodel of the 900 Building into a state-of-the-art culinary arts instructional facility.

Upgrades include new kitchen equipment, gas service, dry goods storage, instructor workstation, lighting, and finishes for two culinary classrooms.

A mock restaurant/service space with indoor and outdoor dining adjoins the classrooms.

Sustainable Academy of Building and Engineering (SABE)

Only 10% of California Partnerships Academies (CPA) have received the California Partnership Academies Distinguished Academy award over the last 35 years. This year, only six of 393 CPAs were awarded the honor, including Hoover High School’s Sustainable Academy of Building and Engineering (SABE).

Completed in Oct. 2011, SABE, originally called the Green Construction Program Building, is a cutting-edge project that features a modern, commercial-grade woodshop set in an industrial arts classroom.

The 5,700 square-foot instructional facility is a model of green construction and efficiency; the building design utilized criteria from the Collaborative for High Performing Schools (CHPS) in order to provide a learning environment that is energy efficient, healthy, and comfortable. The facility features state-of-the-art dust collecting/ventilation and noise reduction systems, photovoltaic solar system, and LEED certified exterior building materials. In 2012, the project was awarded the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification.

The Academy focuses on sustainable building techniques and career opportunities in the energy and construction fields. The building itself serves as an educational lab where students learn about subjects ranging from renewable technologies in construction, photovoltaic solar systems, renewable and recycled building products, and energy efficiency. Students have access to state-of-the-art and industry-standard tools, where they can hone and refine carpentry skills applicable in today’s workforce.

MEDIA ADVISORY

San Diego Unified and CALPIRG to Present New Clean Water Plan to School Board

WHAT: San Diego Unified’s Board of Education will consider adopting a groundbreaking clean drinking water plan at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting. The new plan calls for providing drinking water districtwide solely through filtered hydration stations, with the goal of achieving the strongest lead in water standard in the state of 1 part per billion or below. A filtered hydration station will be a combination traditional drinking water fountain and reusable water bottle filling station.

Officials from the California Public Interest Research Group (CALPIRG) will join Superintendent Cindy Marten, representatives for Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez and representatives for Assemblywoman Shirley Weber to tour Clay Elementary School, the pilot school for the new clean water plan. Leaders will also be joined by Clay Elementary School Principal Lindsay Michaliszyn, whose campus served as the district’s pilot site for the filtered hydration stations.

GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS:

Cindy Marten, Superintendent, San Diego Unified

Laura Deehan, Public Health Advocate, CALPIRG

Richard Barrera, Board of Education Vice President, San Diego Unified

Lindsay Michaliszyn, Principal, Clay Elementary School

BACKGROUND:

Since April 2017, San Diego Unified has aggressively pursued lead in drinking water through districtwide testing of drinking water fountains. Using a strict action level that is three times stronger than legal requirements, more than 2,500 water samples have been taken. Any drinking water outlet that produced a result above the district action level of 5ppb has been remediated. All high risk schools have been remediated to date.

San Diego Unified used the lessons learned from the data generated from all the testing to date, and is ready to take a big leap forward in the clean water plan by moving to filtered hydration stations district wide.

More details about the plan being presented to the Board of Education can be found here.
