Joint Statement from Los Angeles Unified And San Diego Unified School Districts
Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner and San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten issued the following statement:
Reopening schools is integral to the future well-being of our students as well as restarting the economy. However, opening our schools will not be as easy as separating desks or placing pieces of tape on the floor. We will need to ensure the safety and well- being of all in our school community – students, staff and families. Facilities will need to be reconfigured and supplies purchased to sanitize schools on a regular basis. Personal protective equipment will need to be provided to students and staff. More teachers and staff will be needed to do this extra work in schools and to provide both in school and online learning programs. And State authorities have to provide the funding for all of these necessary pieces.
The proposed 2020-21 State budget does not provide the necessary funding to safely reopen schools. And the Governor's proposed cuts for public education in the May Revise to the 2020-21 State budget come at a time when schools are being asked to do more – not less – to deliver a quality education for students.

Public health authorities must solve some very real issues for the safe return of our school community. For example, our two school districts employ about 90,000 people and serve approximately 825,000 students who live with another couple million people. A robust system of COVID-19 testing and contact tracing will need to be in place before we can consider re-opening schools. Local health authorities, not school districts, have to lead the way on testing, contact tracing and a clear set of protocols on how to respond to any occurrence of the virus.

SAN DIEGO - Coinciding with Classified School Employee Week, the San Diego Unified School District will honor its 2020Classified Employee of the Year and runner-up while celebrating all classified employees throughout the week.
Andrea Eaton, Maintenance Planning Senior Coordinator for Physical Plant Operations (PPO), has been named Classified Employee of the Year for 2020.
"Our classified employees are the glue that holds our schools together," said Superintendent Cindy Marten. "The dedication of our classified employees is nothing short of inspiring. I would like to congratulate Andrea as we celebrate all of our classified employees."
In her more than 16 years with the district, Eaton has worked on sustainability programs, including a role developing the district's solar projects, among others. She has also championed a Health and Wellness Program within PPO.
"As the single point of contact for all self-help requests, Ms. Eaton works collaboratively with various community/volunteer groups, school administrators, school-based staff and central office departments," her supervisor Bryan Ehm wrote in his nomination letter. "Her guiding focus is to meet the needs of the community, students and staff of San Diego Unified School District. The strong relationships she has established have benefited the communities we serve and the district immensely."

The district will also honor Classified Employee of the Year Runner-up Sylvia Hoffman, Administrative Asst. I at the San Diego Metropolitan Regional & Technical (MET) High School. Known as "Mama Bear" to the 150 MET students, she is highly respected by her colleagues as their "go-to" person for matters large and small.
The selection process for district Classified Employees of the Year is thorough. It begins at the school where nominees are first selected as their school's Classified Employee of the Year. These individuals have the option to apply for districtClassified Employee of the Year.

MEDIA RELEASE: May Revise Response

San Diego Unified joins largest districts in California to Advocate for Adequate Education Funding

The San Diego Unified School District today joined California's largest school systems to issue a response to Gov. Gavin Newsom's May Revise. Serving nearly 1 million students, the districts warn: Schools cannot continue to operate safely in the fall with declining state funding. After providing more than 24 million free meals, distributing more than 300,000 tech devices, and training more than 40,000 educators for Distance Learning, the state's largest districts tell State Lawmakers: "We cannot in good conscience risk the health and safety of our students and staff by returning to the classroom prematurely and without funding for the necessary precautions given the continued lack of a national (COVID-19) testing program and a lack of clear understanding of the impacts of coronavirus on young people."
