PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Central Elementary-Wilson Middle Rebuild Phase 1
This project is a major rebuild of the existing Wilson Middle School campus. Crews first demolished existing structures on the west side of the campus along 37th Street, and are in the process of constructing and relocating the new Wilson Middle School, which will provide approximately 147,000 square feet of space and 135,000 square feet of hardcourts and parking. Seven new buildings will be constructed during this project, including a new Performing Arts Center. A large, centrally located grass playfield will also be constructed.
The main entrance to the new Wilson Middle School will be moved to the south side of the new campus along Orange Avenue. A new student drop-off and pick-up area, including a bus zone and an area for special education students, will be constructed. Another bus drop-off and pick- up area is provided along 37th street.
Building 100 is a one-story administration building that will house counseling, a health center, a parent room, administrative offices, and support spaces. Buildings 200 and 300 are two-story classroom buildings that will house science, special education, general-purpose classrooms, food kiosks, and support spaces. Building 400 is a two-story building that includes a food service area. Building 500 is a three-story building that will house the music program on the first floor, library and engineering on the second floor, and arts and support spaces on the third floor. Building 600 is a two-story building that will house physical education on the first floor and performing arts and a multipurpose room on the upper floor. Building 700 is an innovative three- level parking structure that includes play courts on the top floor.
After the new Wilson Middle School is completed, the existing school will be demolished to create space for a new Central Elementary School.
Central Elementary-Wilson Middle Rebuild Phase 2
The Central Elementary School major site rebuild relocates the elementary school, and includes construction of nine new elementary school buildings, providing approximately 82,500 square feet of space.
The project provides a total of 26 new general-purpose classrooms, and 14 specialized classrooms, including five kindergarten, five special education, and four pre-school classrooms. Each of the general classrooms has access to an approximately 280 square-foot collaborative space designed for pull-out instruction. New academic support spaces include school administration, a Library Learning Center, multipurpose room, daycare, and an after-school program. The project also features a community clinic and health center. Additionally, three new play areas are constructed.
The first new play area is in a courtyard created by the kindergarten buildings and is dedicated to pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. The second play area is in the center of the new campus and includes play equipment, a grass field; and basketball, volleyball and, foursquare hardscape surfaces. The third play area is adjacent to the lunch shelter on the northwestern portion of the new campus and includes play equipment and hardscape surfaces.
BACKGROUND:
San Diego Unified’s capital projects are funded by San Diego Unified School District’s Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified.
PARKING:
Parking will be limited to street parking. Please meet us at El Cajon Boulevard, marked by the red star, promptly at 11:00 a.m. This is where students will sign the final steel beam. We will then walk together to a safe viewing area inside the construction zone.
