MEDIA ADVISORY -- Schools, Qualcomm, Museums 'Augment Reality'

Reporters and editors: The following is information from Qualcomm on a
project they're rolling out on Tuesday. It's involved setting up a system
that uses smart phones to help teach kids about art at the San Diego Museum
of Art. Our School in the Park schools, Rosa Parks and Hamilton elementary
schools, have been the "beta testers" for the project. They're expected to
be on hand for the event Tuesday and you're welcome to photograph and
interview them about this great project.

SMART PHONES, SMART KIDS DEMONSTRATE 'AUGMENTED REALITY'

WHAT: Qualcomm and San Diego¹s "School in the Park" program invite you to
receive an overview and demonstration of an innovative project for 4th grade
students from two City Heights schools: Rosa Parks Elementary and Hamilton
Elementary. This project utilizes mobile devices (smart phones) and
Augmented Reality technology as instructional tools to support Visual and
Performing Arts Curriculum with the San Diego Museum of Art.

The application of Augmented Reality technology in education is
ground-breaking. We envision that the use of mobile devices with these
types of applications promise to be one of the most exciting educational
tools of the 21st century and invite you to come see it firsthand.

BACKGROUND

What does Augmented Reality offer?

It allows students in a learning setting (like a museum) to use a wireless
mobile device for information gathering, communication and personal
expression. Mobility and the application of Augmented Reality open up a
world of learning that goes beyond the traditional classroom and allows
students to interact with what they are seeing and learning as they move
through an exhibit.

About Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality experiences are simulations that merge the physical
environment with digital data about that environment. The mechanism for
doing this is a mobile device. These devices allow the participants to view
a layer of digital information that has been superimposed upon their
physical surroundings. Whether the data is presented through a map-based
interface or by using the device as a ³viewfinder² through which they can
look at their environment, students have access to additional information
about their surroundings. This information can provide insight or it can be
a series of interlinked video/audio/text presentations that ³tells a story²
about the environment. This ³story² provides a context for providing
academic material in a meaningful and engaging manner, teaching content in a
narrative structure. In museum settings, the experiences with original
works of art can be enhanced with information that the participant can
select on the device.

In addition, the use of Augmented Reality-specific roles, virtual
interactions, and data gathering techniques supports the communication &
collaboration, research & information literacy, and critical thinking,
problem solving & decision making aspects of National Educational Technology
Standards (NETS).

Making choices for students is an important intellectual activity and
engages them in ways they often don¹t experience in a traditional classroom
setting. The Augmented Reality experience is active, collaborative and
project-based. It gives students opportunities to apply what they are
learning in meaningful ways that take full advantage of the rich resources
within San Diego¹s Balboa Park.

NEW FOOD STAMP OUTREACH PARTNERSHIP TARGETS LOW-INCOME ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

San Diego Unified, San Diego Food Bank Team to Fight Child Hunger

WHEN: 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2010

WHERE: Rodriguez Elementary School, 825 S. 31st Street, San Diego, CA 92113

WHAT: School board, city of San Diego and Food Bank officials are launching
a joint initiative that aims to boost Food Stamp participation among
families at elementary schools where a majority of the student population
qualifies for free- or reduced-price lunch.

Following a pilot this school year, officials will introduce the new
partnership and, alongside the Food Bank¹s team of outreach volunteers,
assist parents one-on-one with completing Food Stamp applications.

In addition, Food Bank staff will distribute food and fresh produce to
parents at the event, which is open to the public.

WHY: According to 2008 U.S. Census data, 483,000 people in San Diego County
live at or below the poverty level and face the threat of hunger. Of this
number, 185,000 are children under 12. (U.S. Census Bureau. American

According to a recent study, 65% of eligible residents do not receive Food
Stamps in San Diego County, and San Diego ranked last in a survey of
America¹s 25 largest urban areas in 2009 with a Food Stamp participation
rate of 35%. (Food Research and Action Center 2009)

San Diego County loses over $144 million federal dollars annually in
unclaimed Food Stamp benefits due to lack of participation. (Food Research

NEWS RELEASE -- SD Unified 'Teachers of the Year' Event Tonight

SAN DIEGO UNIFIED NAMES TEACHERS OF THE YEAR FOR 2010

SAN DIEGO -- A one-time English-language learner, a former community
activist and a ex-biotechnology researcher, now all teachers in the San
Diego Unified School District, have been named Teachers of the Year for
2010.

Nancy Wooten, Emalyn Leppard and Ericka Senegar-Mitchell are elementary,
middle and high school teachers with different backgrounds, classes and
teaching methods, but they're all now Teachers of the Year.

The trio will be saluted at the Day of the Teacher Celebration, from 5-7
p.m., Tuesday, May 4, at Montgomery Middle School, 2470 Ulric St. (92111).
140 school-site Teachers of the Year, the latest class of National Board
Certified Teachers, and the Future Educator Scholars entering the teaching
profession will also be honored.

A Teacher of the Year is selected for each school level. Wooten is a first
grade teacher at Zamorano Fine Arts Academy, Leppard a special-education
teacher at Montgomery Middle School, and Senegar-Mitchell a biotechnology
teacher at Serra High School.

"Teachers are the strength of our district and these three exemplify all
that is best about innovation, caring and drive among our teachers," said
Bill Kowba, Interim Superintendent.

Teachers are picked at each school; the district selection process is a
joint effort between the San Diego Education Association and district
administrators.

All Board members and senior district staff are scheduled to attend. The
event will be catered by students in Culinary Arts programs at Garfield,
Morse and Scripps Ranch high schools, with music by the Patrick Henry High

San Diego Unified's Teachers of the Year and runners-up are eligible to
apply for San Diego county Teacher of the Year, part of the process leading
to the national Teacher of the Year. The county Teacher of the Year ceremony
